NSUCOM Class of 2006!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Boston DO: I wonder who Boston DO is??? Can you show me your platysma muscle? He he he

I cant wait to meet you all next next year! If you have the time off now, enjoy it while you have it!!! Have a good weekend everyone!

Now that finals are done... and Christmas shopping (well, almost).. I took some breaks between studying and (err, studied a bit between) researching alot of related websites... I should have the web site done the is week... Anyways, it'll keep me busy while on break...

-A

BTW, does anyone know when the $750 drop is due? I'm thinking March, yet I couldn't find any specific dates in the literature...

Amra- March 15 for the $750 and May 15 for the other $1000.... 🙂

I'm going to check out our website now. Bless your heart for being such an internet whiz. 😀

Hope everyone's having a great weekend. I'm off to bake cookies so that I have something to give my friends and relatives (who all know how broke I am). 😀

Revision #1 done to our web site... Most of the changes are with a title bar and menu system...

Is there anything I should add or subtract from the menu? Or the sub-menus?

For you 56k'ers.. does it take long to load? (patience-wise, theorectically it should take <25 secs yet I curious real world time)

I have a bunch still to do (esp clean up the graphics) but it's 442a and I am tired (and I have to goto New York City shopping with friends at 9a)...

Please feedback me...

-A

Amra- hey.. you're up late. Funny to see that we are both helping out with our class websites.. I should go and check yours out sometime. I'm all about functionality.. so ours isn't too pretty at the moment. Only one final left...

Hey guys, I just wanted to let you know I have decided to attend NOVA! My deposit goes in the mail tomorrow. I am very excited and can't wait for school to start. Amra, the website looks great.

On a side note, I spoke to my automobile insurer (Geico) this morning and just got an idea how much my policy would increase in Ft.Lauderdale... I was told a whopping 150% increase to approx $2500/year!!!! I drive a nice car ('97 Prelude) but it certainly is not outstanding/extravagent. Furthermore, I currently reside in the DC suburbs, I would think the two areas would be somewhat similar. Anyway, I thought you guys would be amused at that. Looks like I will be trading my Honda in for a TREK 🙂 🙁

Congratulations classmate! Great choice in schools!

That is kinda the dilemma I am sitting on for a bit. Part of me wants to keep my Pennsylvania residency (the fact that i live here - talk about potential duality of terms!) versus getting my Florida residency... I haven't yet weighed the good and the bad on that one...

And I didn't even think of car insurance yet... Stop for a sec and I realize I'm moving my existence to Fla.... 😀

-A

P.S. melancholy: send me over your link.. I'd love to see what your working on... maybe we share some ideas/tips? BTW, not picking COMP was a hard choice for me... I've wanted to go there since 1996... 😛

Amara,
In order to establish your Florida residency..you need to live there for 12 months and be working to be considered a resident.
A driver's license and insurance is a whole different situation. You can get a driver's license and get Florida plates and insurance without a problem...I did it when I moved to Miami...
It is easy...all to easy...but South Florida is a world of its own.

Enjoy the Hurricanes...Georges was enough for me...I don't miss the Florida Tpke at all...but I love visiting....

Does anyone here have the match list for NSUCOM? If you do, please post a link or the results here:

<a href="http://www.studentdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=002509" target="_blank">http://www.studentdoctor.net/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=002509</a>

Thank you.

I tried to get an "official" match list from them for weeks... I played phone tag and finally gave up... instead, I went to some PGY1/2's from NOVA and asked them about their class.. some respectable slots including stalwarts like Hopkins... about 30% match allopathic... I'll dig up one of the emails to get more nfo.. Many do go into FP/IM and stay there.. so I'm not sure if you are looking for a specific residency so it is hard to comment in that respect...

Overall, its pretty much UMiami and NOVA serving south florida (a large population base)... That itself is a great thing (that is one of the keystones that turned me to NOVA from PCOM). For a lot of reasons NOVA is a great choice - the least of which is the weather (IMn-HO)... 😎

-A

P.S. I'm working on a "Why I chose NOVA over PCOM" list - mainly for my mentor that is really wants me to attend PCOM... I'll be sure to share it when its done (probably after XMas - I still didn't start shopping)...

Apikalypse,
I live in South Florida and drive a 2001 Corvette. I pay less then $1000/yr for car insurance. Check into Kemper Insurance Company. Congrats and good luck.

Amra-

One thing: The Nova paperwork says that you cannot establish residency solely for the purpose of attending school. You might want to check the technicalities to make sure you can get around this.

Cheers,
-Fred

I lived in florida one for a year and worked...Only it was 10 years ago. 🙁 Do you think they'd cut me some slack?

Marleybfour-

Thanks for the info. I figure I will be able to find much better rates than what I was quoted. I was pretty amused though.

I'm pretty sure you can be considered a resident of Florida for purposes of taxes, insurance, etc.. but if you weren't a resident when you apply to the school, then you will never be a resident of Florida while you are in school. That's how my undergrad was in VT. Basically we will be residents of Florida which will be recognized by everyone but the school (for purposes of tuition). Here I go with not having a home again.... I'm still considered a resident of Connecticut (for school application purposes) even though I haven't lived there in seven years... it's pretty funky! 🙂

Happy Holidays everyone! 😀

In order to get the Florida resident discount for NOVA you had to be a Florida resident before starting... and that status doesn't change if we become Florida residents (our status at year 1 determines what we are for all 4 years)...

Hmmm....

$4972.00 difference in tuition between Fl resident and non-resident
Ballpark: 50% of Class in non-resident
3 years total

$4972 X 90 students X 3 years = $1,342,440 extra money.

$1.3 Million isn't bad.. yet, you'd think they'd do better with alumni donations...

why-o-why-o-why does always come down to the bottom line? 😡

-A

Hey you could always marry a florida resident, who have been living there for 1+ years... Then they would consider giving you residency status, but there is no guarantee, just that they would consider it. Read the acceptance packet all the info is in there...

Hey I'm going down there in Jan.. I'm starting to believe in love at first sight 🙂 LOL

Mike

Amra...

Let me know what content you need and I'll go find the links on the net.. and I can compile them and then forward them via email....

Mike

daniel

good luck Dan.. if any can help.. please let us know...

Just wanted to say Happy Holidays to everyone.. between shopping, moving people (why do ppl insist on being in their new apartment by Jan 1st??), eating Christmas cookies ( 😳 ) and getting a nice upper respir infection... I wanted to slip the happy holidays in... (I always heard these were times to relax with friends and family?? 🙄 )

Just think, next year, this time... where we'll be...

Good luck!

-A
(achoo!) 😡

Hey you guys, congrats on your acceptance at NSU-COM. I think you'll enjoy your education. Be sure to keep in touch with friends who are going off to other medical schools so that you can truly appreciate how incredibly awesome NSU's curriculum is. Seriously, the systems-based training is awesome. At some schools, they have to juggle pulmonary pathology, cardiovascular pharmacology, and musculoskeletal medicine all at the same time. At NSU, you'll be studying the whole cardiovascular system at once, etc. -- so you don't have to shift gears. So it is a good setup.

Anyways, congrats on your acceptance. I know excited you guys are to get started -- best of luck!

😎 SawBones -- MS-III @ NSUCOM

Merry Christmas, all!

I'll be interviewing for Class of 2006 on January 24th...can't wait! NSUCOM is my top choice and I'm really looking forward to meeting anyone who'll also be there that day. Well, here's hoping that everyone's Christmas wishes come true, particularly an August matriculation to NSU!

--Melissa 😀

Merry Christmas Everyone!
I am having a really good holiday knowing that all my prayers and hard work have paid off. I have sent in my deposit to NOVA and after reading this thread I am even more excited about attending NSUCOM next summer. Thanks for all of the good advice from apartments to car insurance. If anyone knows more info on the match list I would appreciate the stats. I have played phone tag with the school and got nowhere. Who should I try to contact?
Torre

SawBones:

Understanding you're on your rotations yet I was wondering if you could help us (not) soon (enough)-to-be MS1's out answering some Q's..?

I promise I'll stay away from the rapid-fire method.. although I have a ton....

Thanks in advance!

Merry Christmas to all!

-A

P.S. I hope everyone got their fav color in stethoscopes from Santa.... Me? I got 3 expresso makers... Hmmm... I wonder which I'm going to use more (expresso maker v. stethoscope)???????? 😛

I've already started bruising everyone up with my new diagnostic hammer! 😀

Sure thing... fire away. I'll be happy to answer any questions I can, and if I don't know the answer I'll be honest and tell you.

Hey peeps of Nova,
Don't really know where Nova is in Florida. Anyways, I applied to 18 DO schools....no reply yet, only applied in Nov. I've got a 3.3/3.4 and 25. I was wondering if that might get me in. Those of you that are already in, congrats. Well any reply or advice is greatly appreciated.
always,

"When life gets you down, grab life by the neck and choke the living daylights out of it." 😉

NOVA is located in the best place on earth... 😀

3.x + 25 MCAT.. did you call to see if you app's are complete at the schools?

Hi Everyone! I'm back from a week of staying with the 'rents and stuffing my face. 😳 I, too, have a cold (Amra, were you in CT recently to pass on your germs? ha ha) 🙂

I hope that everyone had a great holiday and that you all have a safe and healthy New Year (partying it up since next year we only get two weeks break!).

Best of luck to all those who are interviewing soon! I hope your acceptance candy from Fern works as well for you as it did for us. 😀 Congratulations and welcome to the site for those of you who just posted recently! 🙂

Hey all you New Englanders had better not crack on my Southern Accent when we get down there. 😀

Sling-

It's strange... I lived in South Carolina for about a year... came back "up North" (above the Mason-Dixon line) with an accent. Everyone was ribbing me on it... "Thank ewe!" 😀

Check out the webpage... I done alot of changes.. I am really concerned (besides content) about the time the pages take to load for the 56k'ers. I'm spinning a cable modem or T3 (depending on where I am at), so for me it is almost instantaneous... Also, how is the format for peeps with 800x600 resolution on their monitors? I program in 1152x864 so everything fits for me.. Feedback please!

WoW.... 4:53am and I'm still functional... its not the time that amazes me, its the excess amount of cough suppressant I've taken and I still conscious.. 😱

P.P.S. I am going to switch web hosting companies next week to allow a message forum like this one at SDN. That also allows some other cool stuff that can be done...

I have been accepted to NOVA, but I am waiting to hear from a couple of more schools. But I wanted to say that the website looks GREAT!! It would take me 3 lifetimes to accumulate enough computer knowledge to do that. Nice job Amra!!

Dank-

Congrats on your acceptance to NOVA! What other schools are you considering? In addition to NOVA, I was accepted to COMP, PCOM, and LECOM - if you ever want to talk about those schools, drop me an <a href="http://mailto:[email protected]" target="_blank">email</a>. I've done a decent anal-ysis of all 4 before making my decision...

Best of luck!
-A

Brian- The website looks great! I can't believe how much you've gotten done! YOU ROCK!!! 😀

Is anyone else counting the months and days until we can move, etc...? I know it's wicked early (we'll try not to pick on you Sling) but I'm still so excited and am dreaming about quitting my dreary job and starting school. 🙂 (yes I am one of those nerdy academic types who loves to be in school and to study). 😛

Hey amra make us a BIO section and we can put our pictures and stuff on it. 😎

f_sling3.jpg

I'm counting down too palcaregrl, esppecially since it is so fricken cold right now! It will be a change to only have to worry about two seasons for a while (wet/dry or is it hurricane/safe?). I want to go to that giant indoor/outdoor flea market thing dow there that has like 13 drive-in movie screens! I dig drive-ins, they remond me of my childhood (hiding in the floorboard of my mom and dad's car to sneak into the show w/o paying hehehe). We have some drive-ins around here now but they have two problems 1) You have to drive like 45 mins or an hour to the boondocks where you are afraid to even gt out to go buy popcorn (did you see deliverance?) 2) They only play two dollar movies, the ones that aren't on at the $7.50 movie anymore (you could just rent 'em at blockbuster).

We need to kick up a little more dust on this thread...it seems to be petering out. We must recruit new blood like Comp, they have a huge thread.

Something about clicking that "Add-Reply" button makes me remember what else I wanted to say. 😕

Amra, did yo ever get the match list from NOVA? I can't seem to find it anywhere on the web.

I never did get a match list.. although I did learn a lot from talking with PGY1/2's.. Of the last graduating class, about 30% matched allopathic (including Johns Hopkins). A bunch went in to the "pre-arranged" internships that are affiliated with the school (<a href="http://medicine.nova.edu/ostmed/academics/postdoc/index.htm" target="_blank">click here</a>). The majority went into primary care (I am thinking by choice [hoping?])

I still feel strongly about the clinical education/opportunities offered by NOVA. I compared it head-to-head with PCOM (which I consider the gold standard of affiliations/clinical opportunities) and I still choose NOVA (although there are other smaller factors involved in my decision).

TBH, my most significant factor in choosing a medical school was the clinical education/opportunites available through xxCOM. If I thought NOVA didn't compare to the others (read comments on PCOM), I would have chosen differently - and probably ended up in Philly (where everyone [still] wants me to go).

Remember, Philly is considered the "Mecca of Medicine." 20+ hospitals and 5 (6?) medical schools. South Florida offers comparable demographic size (FTL + Miami), yet is served only by UMiami and NOVA. I think after the new year I'll post all my reasons for choosing NOVA over all the other schools... but for now, I'm late for work...!

Have a great New Years Celebration! And be smart, medical school starts in 7.5 short months!

-Amra

Happy New Year everyone! Only 7.5 months til school, but only 6 months until moving day! 🙂

is everyone planning on moving down in July? I was actually thinking the same thing... After the July 4th holiday.....

-A

I'm planning on trying to get a lease that starts July 1st... though I've heard that July isn't the best month to move to Florida, with the heat and all the bugs. 🙂

Happy New Year everyone!!!!!
This is our year.... We're gonna be doctors!!!!!
Good luck, relax and have a good time before school starts....

I plan on moving down in July to get to know the area and hopefully meet my fellow classmates... and be a beach bumb for a few weeks.....

Mike

I am going down there on Sat 5 before my interview on the 7th. Can't wait. Hopefully things will go my way and in a few weeks I can introduce myself as your fellow classmates. Happy New Year to everyone! Here in Atl it looks like we will be seeing some snow later today, can't wait for the breezy paradise of southern Florida!

hey everyone, Happy New Year! I just sent in my deposit last week. NOVA class of 2006. I still cant believe that its all going to start soon...in sunny florida! Right now i've just been looking on the net for places to live. i think in march or april my wife and i are going to go down and look around and find a place. but i'm thinking that the big move will probably be in july. i just cant wait. congrats to all!

Amra-
Thanks for the info on residencies.
Does anyone know who to contact about the residency programs now that Rogeria is not there anymore?
Happy New Year All!!!
I am also thinking about moving to sunny Florida in July. It looks like there are a bunch of cute apartments right near the university. I would prefer a little cheaper rent, but we'll see what happens.

Yeah I'm looking pretty hard at the ones that take large pets..Sunforest I think. But $980 a month seems a little steep. Probably save $100 a month though by not having to sit in traffic in my jeep (gas hog) every day. If I could drum up a down payment, I could probably buy a decent house for a much smaller monthly payment. We should figure out when everyone is going to be there and hang out together at the beach or something...maybe take a day trip to Key West together! Ilike watching that guy down there chop those coconuts for ppl (keep waiting on him to chop his hand off 😀 ).
