My rough plans are to move to FLT after the 4th of July holiday. I didn't even look at the real estate market down there (good idea on the house Sling!)... hmm.. new project?

I would ideally like to keep my explorer (gas hog) when I move down there - I believe 4 wheel drive will come in handy SOMEWHERE in florida 🙄 ... In keeping that, $800/singl seems, how do I say this, "un-budgeted." I probably thinking of a room mate situation... Or multiples with getting a house...

Who runs the roommate thingy at NOVA? Fern? Maybe I'll create a section of the webpage for that (or at least a message forum).

Is anyone/everyone planning on making preliminary trips to FLT this winter/spring? If so, please keep us posted... I'm planning one probably in March and again in May.. maybe something in the middle just for fun.

Snow in Atlanta? 😱 I lived in South Carolina a few years back... we had a 'dusting' of snow... it shut the whole town down... everyone bought all the bread and milk/etc... 🙄

Yep, big ole flakes of snow falling down over Atl. Funny how everything shuts down, however this time the ground is too warm and nothing is sticking on the roads. There is about 1/2 an inch on the grass. I was thinking about what would happen if they saw snow in Ft. Lauderdale. Probably be declared a state of emergency. Although, I will have to give Florida one thing, they handle hurricane threats with the best of them.

I would try to get a lease that starts July 1st or the 15th... that way you have a couple weeks to get situated and to get to know the area...

I stayed at Cedar Key RIGHT across from teh school (I had the second closest apartment to school, and believe me it was the best luxury one could buy)... and I paid $925 a month for a two bedroom upstairs with cathedral ceilings. I only drove my car to go out or to go shopping. Besides the occasional roadtrip, I probably put 2000 miles on my car my first two years.

For more information on clinical rotations, I would post a thread or just ask current NSU-COM students about them (I'll be more than happy to talk to you about it). Mrs. Lefkowicz is pretty busy and you'd rather get the inside scoop, right?

Anyways, for you 2006'ers, congrats on your acceptance, and LIVE UP THE NEXT 7 months! If you're still in school take tons of pictures with your friends and go out on that day you just didnt' feel like going out... If you're working, well, work. Because once you hit med school things change. Believe it or not, though, my second year i had almost as much freetime as I did in college (although I crammed my a$$ off for the systems tests).

I was wondering why did you choose a 2bdrm? Did you have a roommate or did you just want the space. Also, I am out of state and want to live alone. I am trying to figure out how to afford the rent for a 1bdrm with out of state tuition and all. Do you have any ideas.
I'm snowed in in Virginia (six inches of snow) Most everything is closed and all the bread is gone from the grocery stores. I'm going to starve. (Just kiddin' about the starving part) 😀
 
Well as usual here in the tennessee valley it snowed all around us and we just got the cold wind 😡 What's up with that crap...Viginia above us got snow and Georgia below us got snow dammit and we still have to work!

I am SOOOOOO ready to move to Florida. Maybe that will cure my Raynaud's once and for all hehehehe

So what is the scoop on the waiting lists at the apartments? anyobdy checked into that yet? how soon should we be getting on one? I'd like to go down there sometime in the next month or two and scope out some other places besides the apartments. I noticed on one realtor's web site that you can buy a beachfront condo for like 90k. the payment on that would be like 700 a month or so (much cheaper than the apartments by the school). Only thing is it would suck to have to ride an elevator from the nosebleed floor every time you wanted to go outside. would be awefully cool to wake up to the ocean every day though.

So how much are y'all planning on taking with you for your first two months living expenses? I figger about 5 to 7k. But then my wife and I are ditching some of the furniture we've had for ten years and getting some new stuff when we get there so some of that will be to "set up house" in addition to the billz.

I am from VA as well, I miss the snow, although right now in tampa it is 35 degrees. I LOVE IT!

Anyways, I chose a 2br because I didn't think I could afford a 1br and because someone else at my undergrad was going to go to NSU as well (for the PT program), so we just decided it would behoove both of us to become roommates, since we were the same major, and, obviously kind of knew each other.

I think its a good idea to get a roommate atleast your first year... You will (hopefully) instantly make a friend who is in your class, and you will save some $ (about $500 compared to $700 + utilities). I think the one BR in Cedar Key are a little over 700. They're roomy and nice if you don't have TONS of furniture. I could easily live in a one BR.

Anyways, you guys should be looking at apartments now. I put a deposit down (but did not get locked in for an apartment) in December befoer I started (right aroudn new year's)... I think it was but a few months later that I got an apartment.

Since I left my apt at Cedar Key in June, it will be going up for lease this June/July coming up. Boy lemme tell you you want that apartment since its so close to school.

As for waking up by the ocean, yes, that's nice, but if you plan on going to class all the time (you guys will try it out for the first couple weeks) its going to suck to commute. Both ways. I am not one who likes wasted time in traffic, so living right across the street was perfect for me. I could even walk home on the ten minute breaks to get whatever I needed and be back in time for the next hour...

As an aside, I think Sunforest is a TAD cheaper, for a 1br or 2br... and it is still within walking distance. The only one that isn't within walking distance that says its close to the school is Palm Trace.

I've been looking on apartment.com and also homespot.com (an extension of the classified's from the Sun Sentinal newspaper). Even though I'm still not sure what my situation will be (apartment or rental house) I'm starting to look 'cuz the prospect of not finding a rental house until May or June is freaking me out (what happens if we can't find one, etc...). If I end up coming alone, I'll definitely need a roommate or two so, if you guys find any good deals or info about apartments when you call be sure to post up! 🙂

He just graduated from DMU and is doing his internship and will be doing his residency at Suncoast in Anesthesiology...hope everything is going well...
 
I've been looking at apartmentguide.com at least thats where I got the 980 a month quote for the 2 bdrm apartment at sunforest. I think they are the ones that take large pets palcaregrl. Not sure which ones they were exactly...when I was down there I stayed with some guys in one of those apartment complexes. A guy named Coppola was my contact. Their apartment seemed pretty nice. I'm not sure how that matters, I've been up for almost 30 hours so I'm not making much sense. Dang, I feel like a resident already!!! 😀

JPFL, yeah I know Ashkahn... he's an intern at Suncoast. Don't know him personally but have talked to him a couple of times... I"m not at Suncoast right now, I'm at Bayfront doing my EM rotation, but when I see him (which won't be until March) I'll tell him. Or if I see one of our classmates who is doing stuff at Suncoast I will tell them...

For the apartment seekers, I actually didn't do anything on the internet, I searched in person... I was down in Tampa for the Christmas holiday so I just drove down to Ft. Laud and took a gander around... they will always give you a tour so you can knock out all the apartments in one day to get an idea of what you want... Here's what I think for those who want to live in apartments somewhat close to the school...

Poinciana and Palm Trace are the truly nicer apartments, Poinciana is a little pricey but within walking distacne of the school, whereas Pallm Trace is NOT within walking distance. But its jsut a short drive.

Cedar Key is where I lived. I never had any complaints and hte location is incredible. The apartments are nice and I have nothing to complain about.

Sunforest is right next to Cedar Key and is also within easy walking distance. Most of the students who lived around the school lived here... The ONLY complaint I ever heard is that the maintenance dept is a little slow because the complex is so BIG... but theys till had all their needs met...

What do we need as an MS1? Stethoscope, reflex hammer....? Also, is anything provided/given as gifts? (I think PCOM Alumni present something to 1st years).

SOMA (Student Osteopathic Medical Assocation) each year brings to a hotel near campus Welch-Allyn that setup the different equipment for students to purchase. (i.e. Stehoscope, opthalmoscope, otoscope, etc) It can range from $300-600+ dollars. They will tell you during orientation what you need. Let me know if there is anything else that I can do to help.

Thanks for the information on the apartments. I didn't know that I needed to put down a deposit on an apartment so early. I think that I would prefer to live within walking distance to the school; I would not like dealing with heavy traffic every day.
 
I would definately try to get down to Ft. Laud someone within the next month or so... because you have to remember not only are you guys (as DO students) starting up this summer, but you also have PT, OT, Dental, and Optometry as well... PA students start in May... so you want to get an apartment before those students do.

Quinn- Do you know anyone (in your class or any other) who may be renting a house and not renewing the lease (in the Nova area) or who owns a house and is selling it to go to residency? We may have to rent or buy a house, but I didn't (and don't) know what's available within walking or short driving distance of the school. 🙂 Thanks for any info you can provide.
 
A source tells me that "The Strip" on the Intercoastal (A1A) is a cool place to hang out. Open to verification by Quinn or any other NSU peeps.

Hey Quinn, tunrs out I didn't make a D in that class after all. Remember from page one of this thread? I just stuck my nose in the book and made a 100 + extra credit on the final so it brought me up to a C+ for the final grade...whew. I still think it was evil of that prof to not give me a day or two to study for that test though. C'est La Vie

My wife and I will be heading down there in the next couple of weeks to scope out some places, both apartments and houses. If we come across anything PCG, I'll let you know.
 
Definately. A1A is always a fun place. The only con I can think about is the traffic. I absolutely abhor traffic and bad drivers, and FL has both. So I will and still do try to do anything I can to get as far away from the roadways as possible.

Living out there is actually cheaper than living right next to the school. The school is actually in Davie, FL, which is pretty much rural compared to Ft. Lauderdale... the apartment complexes however know that you need/want to live near school so they can jack up the prices for their rent. If you go 1 or 2 miles away from the school, rent drops significantly. And living on the beach in an apt/condo can end up to being the same price as living right next to the school.

Morning everyone!

I wanted to keep everyone posted (no pun intended 🙄 ) on the status of our website.

We're about 80% complete. Sections I need to still work on include "Life @ NOVA," "Links," and "Students." Mike Parker is going to be sending some pics over when he gets back from FTL (if anyone else has any they would like to share, please let me know).

Guestbook is running. Message boards are running (like these at SDN).

I need some help in putting more content on there. If there is something you'd like to see that I missed, please let me know and I'll add it (student bio section is coming as soon as I learn more CGI).

Open thoughts: If anyone has the time to help with the actual admin of the website or boards, please let me know. This is turning out to be a bigger task than I initally thought (probably 'cuz I keep thinking "How can I do this?").

Also, if any of the other class's (there is a strong presence of the Class of 2004/5) would like sections on the page or on the forums please let me know. My #1 goal in working on this project is to create a sense of a big NSUCOM family.

My interview went well. Dr. Terry wasn't there and I actually had met Dr.Martin, chair of the family medicine department before my interview. I walked into the room and there he was. It was an incredible feeling. I think he really wants me there. I was surprised when the anatomy prof, Dr. Kip, I think, asked me about my Physics II final exam score. He knew my percentage! I realized that my physics prof mentioned it in his letter, guess he wasn't the best person to get a letter from. Too late now. However, Dr. Kip didn't seem to mind that I looked shocked by his question, he was smiling the whole time. Dr. Morris was the third Dr. and he is very fair. Overall, my interview went well and lasted 30 min which is 10 min longer than most of the others. I will be really surprised if I don't get accepted there. I could just sense their positive attitudes. Let me add that my MCAT score is perhaps my weakest point, I didn't do well on it but they seemed more interested in my motivations than the test. However, keep in mind that there is a 90% chance that they will target your weakest attribute. Don't get worried, they are very fair and the worse part is the waiting before the interview. The school is wonderful and the students seem very pleased. I spoke with a M-4 who had stopped by and he didn't have anything negative to say about the school. It is a great place and is easily my top choice. Best of luck on your interview and remember, there is a seat there for you, you just need to show them that you want it bad enough.

Hi guys! Congrats on getting in and great job on the 2006 class website. I am currently an M1 at NSU and thought you might want another opinion on where to live.
It all depends on your personality. If you are someone who likes to study at school in the study rooms and want to be able to get to class in 10 minutes or less, than living close to campus is great for you. On the down side the Davie area is very spread out, nothing to do, and pretty asthetically dismal. If you don't mind a 25 minute drive, enjoy studying at coffee shops and unique bookstores within walking distance, than anything East of Andrews (NOT West-quite shady) in Fort Lauderdale is great. I have a friend that lived in Weston (just West of Davie), and I stayed with her and took a lot of time to scope out the areas before I decided on where to live. I chose to live in East Fort Lauderdale because I wanted to be on the water. There is nothing better than waking up to take a run along the intercoastal or just walk across the street to a fabulous bakery for a morning coffee and pastry. On the downside I can't just run home for lunch, so if you have a dog you need to let out, that can be a problem.
I know of a few of my classmates that chose to live near campus to get a feel for medical school, but have moved or are in the process of moving to an area that suites them better.
As far as traffic goes, living West of Davie is a nightmare! Most people live West (formerly the Everglades-now cookie cutter developments), therefore it takes up to 45 minutes to get just a few miles since everyone is going East in the morning to work. If you live East, as I do, it isn't so bad. I live 13 miles from school and leave 25 minutes before (making your way up the levels of the parking garage takes 1/2 the time).
East Hollywood is also a great area to live, and not far from school. There is a great historical section and nice beaches as well.

The area code 33316 or 33315 are great areas for houses and are near the beach. 33301 and 33304 are also good area codes that line the beach, but they may be a bit more expensive. Try getting a Sunday Sun Sentinal newspaper, they have a rental section. Anything that lists the RioVista, Victoria Park, or Los Olas area are in those zip codes and close to the beach in Ft. Lauderdale. East Hollywood would also be listed in the Sun Sentinal.

Great! Thanks KateWL! 🙂 That's very helpful. I have checked out the Sun-Sentinel classifieds online (www.homespot.com if anyone else is interested). As far as rental houses though, the realtors that I have talked to basically have said not to bother looking before May or June for a July move... that makes me a little nervous... are there a lot of options for rentals usually or is it hit or miss? Thanks for all the info! 😀
 
Hey that's good info Kate. I will be headed down there this coming Thursday to check some places out. Where do you recommend looking besides the paper? Also, can you recommend a nice restaurant in the area?

I spoke with Mona over at Sun Forest today. She advised no later than April to fill out an application and get on a wait list. I'm looking at other options down there (when I get down there - February-ish). Although the bright side is we can do most of it via fax and phone.

Wow! I'm so glad I happened upon this post. I'm going to be interviewing at UHS on January 28. Are any of you future interviewees going that day? I'd love to have an idea of who would be there.

I enjoyed reading all the posts from those who have chosen UHS. I was smiling as I read where everyone is from and thinking I could possibly end up knowing you all.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice you're giving for the interviews and beyond.

Is the rule for the acceptance fee fourteen days after acceptance set in stone? What do you do if you haven't heard much from all the other schools?

I was also just wondering what the typical schedule is for a first year student at UHS.

The on-line version of the Sun Sentinal is not representative of what is out there. I remember since I was once in the same position, saving my preferences in housing on their site and waiting as the results they e-mailed me were quite minimal. Besides the paper itself, which has a lot more listings that the on-line version, the best bet is to make a weekend trip and check everything out.

As far as restaurants go-in the Davie area there is Gatsbys and the Armadillo Cafe on University Dr. as well as the avg. chain restaurants seen in virtually every city-IHOP, Chili's, etc. In Ft. Lauderdale, check out Brasserie Las Olas, Louie Louie's, or Samba Room for a great mid-priced dinner, O'Hara's for great jazz and drinks, and The Atlanta Bread Co. for a light lunch-all on Las Olas Blvd. Tarpon Bend on Himarsshee is great "bar" food, and Taverna Opa on Ocean Dr. (I believe) in Hollywood is fun-waiters and patrons dance on the tables. It is a great greek restaurant that turns into a community party by the end of the night. Any other questions just ask!

My favorite in Ft. Lauderdale is Bootleggers. It is on the Intercoastal and has several other restaurants right next to it. It is outside, with a view of the water and a pool to dip in if it is hot. On Sundays they have Reggae music and a bikini contest. Great for chillin' with friends.
 
Hello everyone!!

I'm in Fort Lauderdale right now. I've been looking around at houses and apartments.

For apartments, the two closest are cedar key and poinciana lakes, which are just north of NSU on S. University Drive.. They are both within walking distance and cedar key is slightly closer...

(a word of advice, if you plan to buy a house, get preapproved/at least prequalified before you come down here. Most realestate agents won't work with you otherwise..)

Basically Cedar key is a bit closer and they have a bigger pool, and a hot tub(none at poinciana), they both have exercise room, (poinciana has 2 pool tables and racquetbal courts). I think the exercise room is nicer at cedar key...

Hi Mike and Slingblade - (over from the financial aid post)- I'm pretty sure we are only considered for a nine month budget for our first and second years because of the summers (the summer after second year is part of the third year budget) so we are only allowed the 38.5K for the Staffords. Does anyone remember how much tuition is going to be this coming year? (they told us during the fin aid presentation at the interview, but I don't remember).

Also- any current NSU'ers - can you give us an estimate for books and school expenses for the first and second semester? (rough estimate would be great). 🙂 Thanks!

Mike- thanks for all of the housing info... do they have houses in the Poinciana Lakes development? I think apartments.com said they did, but I can't remember. 😀
 
I'm and M1 so here is my perspective. First semester will be your most expensive semester. You will need to buy labcoats (2-3) which are about $30 a piece, scrubs (any solid color), and a dissection kit $15.
For clinical practicum you will need the following items: (this is according to Dr. Ginter, who I am sure will be teaching you guys next year):
stethoscope- any brand you wish
sphygmomanometer (blood pressure cuff) - get the most inexpensive one. Some are fancy and expensive, don't buy them b/c when you are doing roatations they will have them on the wall. You only need it for this class. But you must have it.
Two tuning forks: 512Hz, 128Hz
pocket visual acuity card
otoscope/opthalmoscope -(if you can, get Welch Allen b/c that is what they teach you with. There is a new scope by Welch (pan optic) that lets you see the eye with incredible detail..you can buy it but you won't be able to use it in class or on exams. You must use the traditional type). So don't waste your money on it or be talked into it. Get the most inepensive one b/c again when on rotations they will have it on the wall.

bulb insufflator (for the otoscope)
disposable ear speculums

This equipment alone adds up to a lot of money $500-$600. To avoid dropping a good chunk of your first months loan money start buying some now if you can. Welch Allen will come the first week of school and sell you this stuff at a discount. Shop the internet, you will be able to find equal deals. How much can you discount a reflex hammer and a tuning fork? I think their price for the scopes were $300-350.

As far as books, It's up to you, and how you study. You will definately, absoultely need an atlas for Anatomy. I think netter is the best. I also recommend Rohen's Color atlas of anatomy. It has real pictures in it. I would study from Netter first to get the general concept of where everything is but them completely focus on Rohen. Two reasons, it never ever looks as pretty as Netter's drawings. So if you spend all of your time looking at the drawings and then go into the lab before a test to look at structures, it may take you 10 minutes to recognize the superior mesenteric artery b/c the real body is not as clear cut as netter's drawings. Secondly, it kept me out of the gross lab. I would study the pictures and therefore make my time going over structures in lab more efficient. This is just my opinion.
You will also need Grant's dissector and the radiology atlas. The one we used this past semester was Imaging atlas for Human anatomy by weir. You will use this for Anatomy and Radiology.

You do not need a single book for Histology or Biochemistry. They give you everything you need. They will encourage you to buy a histology atlas, but several weeks before each test you can buy a video tape of every structure you need to know for the practical which is put out by the histology professor. Biochemistry profs will give you a handout of the notes for every lecture. They test from the notes and extra info mentioned in class. Nothing comes from textbooks. If you feel you need a book for clarification then I recommend Lippincotts Biochemistry 2nd edition by Champe and Harvey. It is a board review book so it is to the point. Last semester the only book I opened was the Anatomy atlas' and the book for clinical practicum. Don't buy this book (clinical practicum book) until school starts b/c I think they are coming out with a new edition.. Every other class gives you the notes and that is what they test from.

Besides some supplies I can't think of any more expenses. Hope this helps.

Small Med. Equip:$675.00
Health Insurance:$950.00 (Whole year)
Clubs: $280.00 (Inc. "Test Packet"--previous 3 years' exams)

Yes, it is ridiculously expensive. As others have mentioned, you can get away with not buying all the books, and save some money there; as well as buying the cheapest medical equipment (I bought the middle of the road stuff). If you want more specifics, email me. Hope this helps.

You will be budgeted a full year's worth of $, not a nine month budget, or whatever you were talking about... As an out of stater, I got I think 6-7k a year... In staters obviously get more... As a third and fourth year Stafford lets you take out more, I get 9100 a semester (I just got the check today)...

First year can get expensive, esp with your diagnostic kit and such... get the cheapest sphygmo, get the best stethoscope you can get (it will last you your lifetime), and everything else is cheap. First year you don't really need any textbooks... second year you will...
 
well...it is done. it is no longer in my hands.
The interview yesterday went well. I had Dr. Terry, Dr. Sandhouse, and Dr. Kalmey and the interview was very relaxed and interesting.
The tour was great, great campus, we saw Harvey
(VERY interesting), and just had a positive experience over all.
Now of course since the committee does not meet today I will hear from then in approximately 2-3 weeks. let's hope for the best....

Stickboy (aka T3) is the coolest, whittiest, sexiest, and by far most intelligent classmate I know (excluding the other members of the crew 😉 ! The only thing that makes him a dork is when he buzzes off his hair (and if you EVEN bring up the Heat Meisser thing...).
