NSUCOM Class of 2006!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Well, folks...

I must say, thanks to Amra and AW(KateWL) for the kudos. But, I am just the figurehead for a much larger machine. If you do take the time to peruse the material on the 2006 website, please keep in mind the following superstars:

King Amra for maintaining the site and putting everything up.

KateWL/AW, Digginbones, Skid, QLD (Doops), TomV and countless others who contributed.

I/We hope you all get something out of it, but keep in mind it's just a few people's opinions (mostly mine  ) So don't accept it as the gospel truth, but just as one perspective to help you think about things as you make up your mind for yourself!

Hope it helps.

Cheers,
-sb

Hey guys:

I am hoping you can help me with this question as you all have been through Nova's interview.

I am preparing for my interview which is upcoming. I am sure I will be asked the infamous "What are your weaknesses and strengths" question. Just out of curiosity, what kinds of things did you guys say for the "weaknesses" part of that question?

Hmmm... I think the interviewers did a pretty darn good job of pointing out my weaknesses without so much a a peep from me.... They got me from everything from my undergrad GPA to my MCAT writing sample to my freshman English grade (12 years ago). 😛 Yet, that is to be expected...

For strength(s)... well, the one I focused on the most is my work ethic. While completing my masters degree, I hold a FT job, a PT job, a graduate assistantship, webmaster(of NSUCOM Class of 2006 ) [you KNEW I had to get that in someWHERE 🙄 ] and a partridge in a pear tree...

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I'm a chronic overachiever that doesn't like to sleep... enough of me..

You should know your strengths and weaknesses better than anyone. Remember, don't shy away from your weaker areas (everyone has them) - use them as a springboard to bring out a positive quality.

"no sir, I really don't remember why I got a D in English 101... however, since then, I've been published in 2 magazines and wrote a newsletter for a physician"

I'm chatty tonight...
-A

P.S. StickBoy is the real GURU! I think we should all buy him lunch when we get there....

😳 I thought I was prepared for my interview and then Dr. Kip asked me why I got a 66% on my Physics II final exam but still maintained a B in the class. I was soooooo shocked . Apparently my physics professor mentioned how he was dissappointed about my final exam score in my letter. Take the previous advice and turn a negative into a positive. Remember, we all have our weaknesses, they just want to see how you will react. Be yourself and they will appreciate your honestly. I did and recieved my acceptance letter last week. Good luck. 🙂

When I was asked about one of my weaknesses
I just told them that a person is more than
what can be seen on paper. Otherwise you would not have invited me to be here today.
Always remember that they want you just as much as you want them. Use it to your advantage.
The paperwork gets you the interview, but YOU have the means to get the acceptance.
good luck! 😀

i told them that I was a chronic drinker with few people-skills and an overbite....just kidding.
Give them a cool weakness(aka strength) like work-ethic and things work out great.

Definitely take your weakness and use it as a hidden strength (they dig that): aka, "I'm a perfectionist, so I get frustrated with myself when I can't do something as well as I had hoped...but it has helped me to become more patient, etc..." something like that. 😀

"Ditto"

Practice turning weaknesses around to make them seem like a kind of positive and for pete's sake don't try to list everything wrong with you . Fortunately for me at that interview, Dr. Terry and the others did not mention a word about any of my many weaknesses, but at other schools they did and I had practiced what I said and BAM! I got accepted at every school I applied to. And trust me dudes/dudettes I had plenty of weaknesses . BTW, I just got a rejection from my state school today!!! ba$****$--Not that I was gonna go there anyway. Just sucks to be RJ'd. 😛
Dang...I'm a little chatty tonight too! I just got broadband internet access today finally!! So I'm all happy

Thanks guys, for all of your responses. I guess I want to answer the question if it is asked and I really don't want to answer with the ever popular and almost cliche, "I'm a perfectionist..." response. They have heard that umpteen billion times.

I was hoping to hear a benign "weakness" that is truthful in my case, without trying to turn it around as a strength. I guess I was just thinking that everyone else does that and I'm trying to stand out and sound genuine (which I am). Hell, I'm probably giving it too much thought 😀 .

Thanks again!

Thanks to StickBoy we now have the official "StickBoy's Guide to NSUCOM for Incoming MS1's" posted on the website. Stickboy- YOU ROCK!!!

I LOVE the advice site! Everyone should check it out! Now, finally, the reality has hit me- we're going to medical school and it's only a couple of months away!!! I'm both excited and a little scared, but I can't wait!!!! 😀

Just wanted to share my current thoughts (I'm spending and exciting Sunday doing taxes and laundry). Hope everyone's having a great weekend!

😀

Hey guys, got accepted a week ago to the NSU-COM Class of 2006! Woooooooooohoooooooo! Medical school here I come! Hehe! Anyway, a little about myself. I'm 21 years old (yeah I know, I'm a young'in!) and currently enrolled in the NSU College of Pharmacy Class of 2005. I decided that this was not the right path for me in life and I applied and got in osteopathic school here (everyone including my girlfriend think I'm crazy!) I'm TRYING to stay motivated with my classes so I can finish off strong and wait out till orientation in July. I hope to meet you guys all right off the bat...you come off as some enthusiastic, down to earth, kick ass people and I would enjoy hangin' out with you all. Well hope to hear from you guys throughout the months left...I unfortunately have to get back to learning about boring ass pills, suppositories, and IV's....fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun stuff, let me tell ya! Aight, peace!

NSU-COM Class of 2006 (wooooooooohoooooooooo!)

Congrats, Nema! I hope in the long run you'll feel you made the right choice. You can't completely escape Goodman and Gillman's or medicinal chemistry, though! At least this year will help you out for this fall. Biochem shoudl be a breeze! Of course, that means many MORE hours of Grady, Block, Dr. V, and Grossclose. You should be biochem master by the end of next fall!
Say hi to your current classmate, Pete K. (or, as we know him, Petie) for me! That OCD boy/bastard (affectionately termed, of course) 😛

Kate

Hey Kate, thanks alot! Hehe, yeah, I think I'm going to be a biochem. master by the end of next semester. By the way, are you by chance comine to NSU-COM in the fall? Or do you paruse message boards like that for fun..hehe, just kidding! Anyway, I will definitely say hi to Pete, although I'm kinda torn on how to say I talked to you. I'm trying to keep the whole switch to med. school on the down low from all my pharmacy buddies. Word spreads too fast and the rumor mill in my freakin' class deserves an award! Hehe, well, I'll find something out. Anyway, thanks for your response and take care!

Kate, hehe, just "parused" the discussion board myself and found out you're a M1. Sorry about the mix up!

Congras Nema! Welcome! (I really love that little guy).

You already have a heads-up on the rest of us, being at NSU already. We'll probably look to you to show us the ropes (and keep us from getting lost). I can't wait to meet everyone, and maybe I'll give you a call when I'm in the area scouting out housing later this spring. 🙂

Congrats again, and to everyone else...WHERE ARE YOU? We can't let this board die already! We're not even in school yet! 😀

i am lurking in the shadows just waiting until I can quit this job and move down to Fort Lauderdale. It is so nice to know where my life is going the next couple of years.
Maybe some of you all will be in the area when I go down to look for places to live around March or April. It will be great!

have a good day...

daniel

Daniel...
I know exactly what you mean...I'm deliberating whether I should leave my present job politely, or whether I should run out screaming at the top of my lungs....maybe I could act as if I went crazy...yeah, that's it...CRAZY!!!HEHE!!!!

well...politely of course, however
our boss will still be a bit...hmmm..mad? disappointed? we have 6 people in our lab and 5 of us are leaving either way, three of us here in the lab are going to fort lauderdale in the fall, one guy will follow his girlfriend to whereever she gets accepted into school and one girl had a baby a year ago and will most likely move on as well...but you have do to what is best for you. and for me it is definitely not turning, or rather staying a lab rat my entire life 😛

Where is everyone going for additional loans? Presuming that peeps are going over the 38.5 from the Staffords...

I saw Mike's link for Bank of America... anyone check out the Loannow.org (the one with the advertising banner on SDN)?

Ugghh... my project for the weekend... learn Bank-ese... 😛

Hey hey hey...what's goin' on??

Well, I hope everyone is not in the pit of despair like I am right now. Pharmacy school freakin' sucks!!!!! I am so unmotivated since I found out that my acceptance is not contigant upon the completion of the classes I'm in right now. I've got a huge, major pain in the ass test in pharmacodynamics (the study of drugs in the body) and a pharmaceutical marketing project coming up. I hate souding like a whiner...but I can't take this anymore! Anyone have any coping strategies???? I think I'm a little TOO anxious to start med. school that I can't focus. Well, anyway, I'm planning to live on campus next semester, like I do know. For anyone trying to save money and time on commuting, this is your best bet. The surrounding apartment complexes average in the 1000's and they aren't worth the amount of money you pay for (it's like living in an expensive dorm minus the ra's). The one I'm living in now is a two bedroom two bath...the best part is that there are no fluctuating bills, so you can run the air to 60 and leave all the lights on if you so choose. The bad part is the usual things...the dorms are kinda older looking, there's only one phone line for phone and internet use, some b.s. rules you have to comply with (like no candles, pets, etc....but hey, the ra's here barely know who you are and do not pester you like undergrad. ones do so you can pretty much do whatever the hell you want.) It's also within walking distance of the new library, the bookstore, and the Recplex. University Drive is a 30 second drive away as well as the HPD. Check it out if you don't mind all the ups and downs.
Oh hey, if any of ya'll are coming down to visit here, let me know. I would love to meet some of my future classmates ahead of time! 🙂
Arggghhh...well back to studying for this test ...wish me luck and I hope to hear from ya'll soon! 😀 Peace out!

Hey All,
I actually got some correspondance from the Fin Aid department! Amazing! 🙂 But, it's an authorization form for Title IV funds....what the heck are those? If anyone knows, please fill me (and the rest of us in)....

Also, how do we apply for additional loans since we don't have to fill out that NSU financial aid application this year? (Last year's had a bunch of alternate loan company info on it)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! 😀

I am planning a trip to Nova March 18-22 to find an apartment. Does anyone know an inexpensive hotel to stay in? Where are the good dancin' clubs? Is anyone else going to be there that week? Florida here I come. 😎

Hey

The best place to stay, and the closest hotel to Nova, is the Rolling Hill's resort on University Dr. It's a pretty nice hotel and if you say you are related to a Nova student (hehehe) then you get a discount. I don't have the number, but it's not hard to find, just go south on University past Nova. As far as clubs, you're on your own with that one...there are far too many to relate to you in this post! Hehe, have fun and congrats on your Nova acceptance!

PS...I'll be here, since I'm in pharm. school at nova. My cell is 954-560-3799 so give me a call sometime and maybe we can meet and I can show you around HPD or something. Hope to hear from you soon!

P.P.S. What was your name again?

Nema

I wonder if the rolling Hill resort is where I stayed when I had an interview there. I'll have to check. Thanks for the advice.

My name is Torre, I used to be a modern dance teacher, my first degree was in Dance and Choreography, and now I teach yoga, but I still love going out dancing. I am going to meet up with my cousin who lives in Orlando and find some fun clubs. I hear there is a lot to do in Ft.Lauderdale when your not burried in books.

Hey everyone! I started talking with a rep at one of the internet companies that sell med supplies... looking for MORE of a discount (boy, I'm a stinker aren't I? )

I posted the entire email reply on the message forums of (drumroll please... you KNEW it was coming!) NSUCOM Class of 2006 website

Click MESSAGE FORUMS then FOR SALE. BTW, any MS1/2/3/4's want to sell stuff that is great place.

Talk with ya'll soon!

Question... RE: message forums on the 2006 website... should we make it so peeps must register to view posts? There are A LOT more peeps reading the forums than post (I see the logs).... this way we can get more people involved....?

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

P.S. I just "lost" my FT job (they changed my hours to ones that I cannot work)... so I'm going to be playing with it more (no perv thoughts, I meant the website!) ... any suggs for content/design?

HEY HIPPUPPY, could you e-mail me! I currently live in Hattiesburg, Mississippi & would like to talk to you about Nova. My address is: [email protected]

Hey, I am coming to NSUCOM. What's up future classmates? I am from PA and I need to get the hell out of here; so that explains (partly) why I am going to NSU. I need a roommate and some valuable information for NSU. Anything will really help out about relocating to Ft. Lauderdale. So please reply, even just to make conversation.

PS: I am not computer savvy, so you will see this hello statement several times throughout the forum.

Hello Peeps, new and old. 🙂
I am going to go with Wells Fargo for additional loans. They seem to have a good rate, and only capitalize once at the end of the loan period. If you want private loans that are listed in the financial aid info, the school suggests printing the form from their website and applying that way... Also, the student budgets for our class aren't done yet (I found this out after emailing a financial aid lady TWICE-she deleted my first inquiry without reading it- how rude!)..but the increase is usually 2-3% per year. Hope this helps a little for anyone wondering.

I am currently looking for one or two roommates. I haven't been down there yet, but am looking to go sometime in March. Has anyone secured an apartment within walking distance of school and is looking for a roommate? When is everyone planning on moving down? I'm thinking the beginning of July, so I'll have a month to acclimate to the WARM weather (hot really from what I've heard) and get situated. Anyway...that's my piece for now. Hope you all are having a productive week...I have a nasty head cold (can't wait for that warmer weather).

jabroni108-

where is Pa you at? I'm in Pa too... Scranton Area... attending U of S....

Another one sick of the cold!

I added a chat room the the website tonight... In addition, there is NOVA's GOAT and the M1 schedule (both compliments of StickBoy).

I'm planning on the orientation schedule of the Class of 2005 for tomorrow.. but right now I need some sleep...

Hi Guys,

I'm going to be in Florida March 17-21st! I'm excited to be going. Can anyone recommend a good (and not expensive) place to stay. All of the hotels that I've looked at are over $100 per night! Yikes! So anything under that would be great (besides Rolling Hills...). 🙂

It seems like no one's been posting lately, so I just kinda wanted to bump us back up there. Later Gators! he he he 😀

Hi all. I interviewed a couple of weeks ago and am waiting for word from NSUCOM. In the meantime, this thread and your clever website have been great sources of info...thanks! 😀

PalCareGrl, when I interviewed I wanted to stay a few days to get a feel for the area and couldn't afford the prices close to NSU. So, I ended up staying in Miramar which was really not far (if you have wheels). Here is the website I made reservations at: http://www.wingateinns.com/Wingate/control/home
I paid about 75$/night, the hotel is brand new, they do the continental breakfast thing, and the staff couldn't be nicer. I booked a room with 2 double beds because it was cheaper...but they upgraded me to a king when I got there.
I really liked Ft. Lauderdale, have a fun trip!

I might have asked this before, but I was wondering if there is a laptop requirement at NOVA? Also, does anyone know which hospitals clinical rotations are held through - basically is there much relocation in 3rd/4th years? Did anyone find a match list? (If not, do most of the students do residencies in Florida?) And, does anyone know how many electives are allowed in the fourth year?

Thanks,
Melissa 🙂

Liz....

When you down there if you grab one of those touristy travel mags, there is coupons for inexpensive hotels/motels.... Holiday inn... confort inn etc....... less than $50/night....
May have changed since january....

When I was in south beach, they had those newspaper type vending machines with free tourist guides/coupons in them....

Good Luck..

Mike

p.s. When you go down there please check out the Condo's going up on Nova Drive... going south on Univ. drive you go left on Nova drive.. and the condo is on the left.... I put a deposit down and I am waiting on all of the paper work to go through....

🙂

mistirvr-

There is no laptop requirement at Nova. I'd say there's a handful that use them. Quite a few students use PDA's, too. Amra's c2006 website has all the info on the hospital rotations for 3rd and 4th years. The vast majority are in Ft. Lauderdale, but there are options to go to Tampa, Orlando and Atlanta, too. I haven't seen the match list, but I seem to recall several querys for it floating around. The 4th year is mostly electives. (Although some are constrained: For example, You must do "rural" electives...there are several sites...including a prison!...different, eh?)

The latest rumor mill says that Nova wants to introduce more problem-based learning in the 2nd year. According to the heresay that I've heard, there would still be a good amount of Lectures, but afternoons would include PBL sessions. I'll pass on any other news that I hear.

Hope this helps,
-sb

Hi everyone, I just received my acceptance last week. I am coming to Nova...boy I am looking forward to the weather (I am from Maryland). Is anyone looking to buy a condo or house instead of renting? Well I am leaning in that direction and I was wondering if anyone has looked into it. I am looking forward to meeting everyone!

Laura

Congrats on all the new acceptances!!!

thx stickboy for your guide et al. (were you our tour guide when I interviewed in November?)

Hey class of 2006, go vote on my mid-july trip poll at where else but NSUCOM2006

Yes Laura, I have looked into it. The word I heard is that you need to get pre-approved before you go. not just pre-qualified because mortgage companies don't look too favorably upon income from staffords (my case) as their primary source of repayment as one could drop out of school and lose the loan income and easily not qualify financially then. So the moral of the story is to go ahead and get pre-qualified now for a certain amount then start looking at places in that range before you leave the comfort of your present income. All of the apartment complexes I spoke with, however, will accept a financial aid award letter as proof of income for their purposes. Just sx to be throwing away all that money on an apt. when you could be investing in some real estate. 😛

Hi everyone! I just called nova a few days ago and found out I was accepted!! I am cancelling my other interviews because I was so impressed with the students, faculty, and campus. I just graduated from school in Baltimore and moved down to Fort Lauderdale (with my family). I live about 10 minutes from nova but am still thinking about getting an apartment right next to school. If anyone is thinking about coming down to go look for a place, send me a message. I can't wait to meet everyone in July!

Hey all..whaaaddup!

Congratulations to all new aceptees to Class of 2006! I'm looking forward to meeting all of you guys in July!

Well, school suks...hey, does anyone know if this semester for me (in pharm.) would affect my acceptance at all...I'm thinking about blowin' off school and using my financial aid leftovers for a road trip....hahah, yeah right, just kidding! But seriously, would it really affect their decision if I didn't do stellar in a class?

By the way, any of ya'll visiting contact me if you wanna meet up and tour around Ft. Lauderdale/Nova campus. I'll be around all semester so just let me know!

Until next time!

Hi palcaregrl,
I will be there 18-22th looking for a place to live. I checked out rolling hills and it is only $89 a night for Nova students and we qualify. Since this is the busy time of the year rates are up. If you find any other cheap places let me know.

$89 is pretty cheap I paid $100 each night except one when I was there in Jan. I stayed right on the beach the last night for $75. But anywhere around Davie was $100+.

Slingblade,
What was the name of the hotel by the beach that was $75 a night? That sounds like a dream!

I need some help guys:

I have been accepted to PCOM, NYCOM, and NOVA and maybe CCOM. I also might be accepted to some allopathic schools. Which do I choose. Currently I am in Philadelphia going to school at USP. I sort of want to get out of Philly. I really like NOVA and CCOM, but I am very unsure about how there reputation, level of education, cirriculum, rotations, and ability to get residencies. I very interested in the OMM Fellowship program and DO/MBA. If there are any current students in those programs, I would like you opinion. Can NOVA compete with the reputation of CCOM and PCOM. Actually I really don't like NYCOM. I am familiar with the hospitals in CCOMs and PCOM rotations. Will I get the best education at the hosiptals in NOVA. NOVA students: How are the teachers, are they teachers? What about the cirrculum, how long is your typical day. Becasue I was at SUNY Buffalo (that is were I am originally from ) and they only go to class from 8-12. That just doesn't seem enough to get a good education. NOVA seems to have a longer day, but I don't want to be in class from 8 or 9 to 5. Are the classes more science based, becasue I was reading the cirriculum and it looked like there are a bunch of classes which might require research papers. I am also interested in research at NOVA. Is it paid research, or just for credits. This there somewhere on the NOVA site to see some the teachers interests in research.

Sorry this is dragging on,
I am also intersted in the ARMY and AirForce Scholarship. If there are any students that have gone through NOVA or PCOM or CCOm that can give me their perspective.

Thanks
Have a great day
Maybe I will see you guys June 29th

TTYL

I can't remember exactly but I think if you go down sunrise blvd all the way to the beach and turn right, it is like a little ways down on the right. It was near some popular pizza joint.

Hello,
Sorry, I've literally been at work for the past four days (and I'm off to work again in 10 minutes...)....

We found a special at the La Quinta in Plantation for $70 per night. I thought that was pretty good because most I looked at were over 100 like you guys were saying. The only thing is that is says it's a "snowbird" special...what the heck is that? I looked under the reservation and it doesn't list any exclusions, but I also don't know what a snowbird is (someone from a colder climate?) Help me out please! 🙂 Other than that, I've been working my two jobs and dreaming of my trip to Ft Lauderdale.

Torre and Nema- do you guys want to meet up sometime since we'll all be in the area at the same time (and we can save Nema from studying pharm for a little while)? Let me know, we've still got a couple of weeks to plan.

Also, does anyone know how far away a drive West Palm Beach is from the school area? My grandparents live in Hobe Sound (just north of WPB) and I wanted to drive up and see them if it's less than four hours. 😀

Thanks! Hope you all are having a great week- congrats to all of the new acceptees!

🙂 Liz
