NSUCOM Class of 2006!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, I have a quick question for those of you who have already apartment hunted. What do I need to bring with me for rental application info? (how many past rentals, etc..) Do they need proof of, income (one of the online apps did), and if they do, how did you handle/explain that you were going to be a student, etc... or are they already used to students coming to rent? I'm particularly interested in those close to campus- Poinciana Lakes, Sunforest, and Cedar Key.

Thanks for any and all info! 😀

I think someone was on here looking to buy or rent a condo. I was wondering if any has looked at the prices for condos. I'm thinking of getting one if I go to NOVA.

Liz, west palm beach is a little over an hour away from Fort Lauderdale (without traffic); you just take 95 north. Hope you have a good trip down, it's been beautiful the past couple of days!

Hey Nelly21

I think you said that you live in Ft. Lauderdale.
Do you like it. Besides the weather, I don't think you can beat the weather.

Do you know of a nice area to buy or rent a condo or apt close to the school

Have a great day
😎

NSU 2006:

Does anyone know how difficult it is to get into the OMM Fellowship at NOVA. I think I heard there are 8 spots per year. Do you have to be a gunner to get one of those spots?

Has anyone heard about any new developments with the orthopedic residency with the Florida Marlins. I recall something on the tour about that.

TTYL
Have a great day

AK

For the sunforest app you will need work info, info from past two rentals, bank account info, credit info such as open charge accounts, loans etc., Car tag and driver license number and ummm. I think that's it. oh and $195 (150 to hold it till july + 45 app. fee) plus 45 dollar application fee for each additional applicant like if you're taking your beau with you.

Hey guys--got my FAFSA through--what now?
I looked back through some recent posts about FA but it just made me more confused. Do I just wait for NSU FA to contact me?
Thanks!

Liz and Nema,
maybe we can get together while I am visiting Ft. Lauderdale. Here's my e-mail. [email protected]. I am looking forward to visiting the beach one of the days that I am there. I need to rent a car, but I haven't decided which company to rent one from yet. Does anyone have any info on that subject?

Gunner??? Boy that's funny..I think they have one spot filled for next year right now. I think the OPP Dept. is great but the fellowship is a horrible deal money and time wise.

Hey RollTide--WAR EAGLE!!! 😛

Just spoke to the Davie police department, they gave me the following information on housing/apartment developments:

The info provided is since 1/1/2001

Poinciana Lakes: 4 auto thefts, 5 vehicle break-ins, 2 apartment break-ins (see below)

Davie Crossings: 5 auto thefts, 3 vehicle break-ins, 6 apartment break-ins (see below)

The break-ins at each complex were fumigators who were running a scam and had access via a skeleton key. She indicated that both communities are also in the normal range for crimes reported.

The lady I spoke with said between the two she would live at Davie Crossings. She said that Gardens @ Nova has the lowest crime rate because it is a gated community. She said that Sunforest presents the most problems for them and that suprisingly the further West you go the more problems you experience.

Thanks for the crime statistics! Scary but necessary. I'm a little worried about my car but not as much about the apartment. Has anyone already gotten an apartment near school?

I looked at the crime statistics for on-campus and they were pretty low- more theft than anything else (but that's true on any campus). Is anyone thinking of living in Plantation? The housing list that the school provides lists the rents at Jacaranda as slightly lower.

For anyone who already lives in Florida: what are the utility costs like? Is it better to own a cell phone than a house phone? What's usually included in the rent (any trash, electric,etc...)? I will post any info I find out after I get back, but since I'm not going for a few weeks...

🙂

Well I was planning to live in sunforest...that sucks. I wonder what kinds of problems they have there since they give them the most trouble. Did they happen to mention that?

Stay away from Sunforest unless you have a large dog (about the only place that allows large pets). I had my car broken into 3 times in a 9 month period. The place is not as nice as it looks in the pictures on the web (they need to paint the place). But really you have the same problems in other places (neighbor in cedar key had car broken into by the same kids twice in one week). This is broward county--car theft is a way of life down here and the insurance companies make sure you know it. It is not however dangerous, they are just young kids (12-16) who through rocks through your windows and take your stuff. If you catch them they run like hell.

I lived in Cedar Key for two years, and never had a problem with crime. We kept our doors locked most of the time, and my car I NEVER left anything inside. Not even a lab coat or anything. I've heard stories of people having their car broken into, but, like Rolltide said, its Broward County.
My personal choice is Cedar Key. I'm biased because I lived there for two years... my fiance' lived in Sun Forest and it was all right. She didn't like hte maintenance guys, they were too slow and kind of creepy. Also there are some pretty suspicious people living there. Her neighbors were kind of suspect.
Poinciana is nice but I don't know if its worth the extra $.
Palm Trace is real nice, but I like the idea of never having to drive a car to school. Saved me time to sleep and gas $.

Utilities:
Electicity: 80-140
Water: 20-30
Cable: 40

...just how much more expensive is car insurance? I pay around 70/month on a 98 Altima right now...I tried to get an online quote from Progressive, but you have to have a street address in the place that you want the quote... Thanks! 🙂

The police department did not expand on the problems at Sunforest. Call the records department of the Davie PD if you want detailed info.

Check back several pages and I made a reference about auto insurance that got a good response from someone who commented on a potential "low rate" insurer. When I checked my policy with Geico they indicated a monthly premium of around $200 (??) for my 97 Prelude. I have a good driving record too. Yikes.

Palegirl,

I suggested Kemper Insurance to someone a while ago. I own a 97 Dodge Ram and a 2001 Corvette Coupe. I pay about $700/yr for the Ram and $1100/yr for the Vette. Progressive and Geico qouted me about three times the amount. If you are under 25 years old a think you pay a bit more. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info on car insurance. I'm so excited to be going down to Florida in just a couple of weeks (if for nothing more than to be warm!!!)

Where is everybody lately? How many of us are there on this site that are entering into the class of 2006? It seems like we're growing daily but I can't figure out how many... just curious. 😀

Hey,
I just found out about this web site like a week ago and it's so helpful. Anyway, I just decided that I am definitely going to NSU this summer. I am from MA so it will definitely be a change of pace. Is anyone looking for a roommate.
Barb

Welcome to new admits! Can't wait to meet you all. If you haven't already- be sure to check out our homepage where you can get great advice from one of the M1s (Stickboy rocks!). 🙂 www.nsucom2006.com

Other than that.... just trying to bump us back up!

Does anyone know about an NSU authorization form that is required...?
Thanks!

Hey Shibby- is the one about the Title IV funds? If so, it's just about your Stafford Loans and whether you want the school to be able to apply them to any outstanding balances that you have with them (from what I understood anyway). 🙂 Hope this helps.... if it's something else, give a little more detail and I'll let you know if I know what it is. 😀

OK--I think that's the one. I tried to download the form from the FA webpage, but I kept getting error messages when I tried...so I'm not sure if I have the entire form downloaded, or if there is more to the form and I just can't download it.
Do you remember what it looks like...For instance, is it a relatively short form with only a statement about releasing Title IV funds and nothing more? I appreciate your help...

I'm so excited...I am accepted to NSUCOM!!. I will see all of you in the fall!

Congrats Luna! Can't wait to meet ya! 😀

Shibby- Yeah, it's a short form, only one page. There are three (?) different things to fill out and then just sign and date at the bottom. Maybe there's only two...okay, I found my copy- there are two things to approve or disapprove and then a disclosure form (if you want your information shared with parents, spouse,etc..) and then you sign and that's it.

Hope that helps! 😀

I did it online like 3 times I think...then I called and it still says OUTSTANDING REQUIREMENT. On the phone they said it takes from 24-48 hours to update on the web page. Congrats luna!!! See you there.

congrats luna! another atlantean coming down to FL. that is nice to know. 😀

Dude, is everybody coming from Atlanta or what? Can I give a shout out to my peeps from the northeast?  Yea New England!!!

Okay, I should really go to bed now...too much work makes Liz silly

PalCareGrl--Thanks muches...that's exactly what I needed to know about that form! And Atlanta is the place to be--you should come visit and we'll get you some grits, sweet iced tea, and turnip greens...mmmmm....then we'll take you to the Varsity!

Whaddup everyone! Sorry it's been awhile...been busy with pharmacy mid-terms (groan!) and the likes!

Congrats to all those new acceptees that have posted recently...look forward to seeing you all in the fall.

Well, gotta go, actually have an appointment with my doctor, a DO of course, for some manipulation...no not the mental kinda, the spinal kind...hehe! Alright, peace!

Hey Liz,
Where are you from in the Northeast? I am from MA and I am coming to NSU also.
Barb

Shibby- Okay, sounds good, but what's the Varsity? Don't have a clue about that one. 😛

Barb- I'm originally from Connecticut, born and raised, and I went to school in VT (UVM). Most of my friends now live in either CT or near the Boston area. 🙂 It'll be good to have a "home" connection at NSU (especially with all of the Atlanta peeps around- he he he)! Bet you can't wait for the warm weather either. 😀

Nema: I'm going to be coming down on the 17th and will be in the area through the 21st. I emailed DancrDr and we should all plan to meet up somewhere..... got any suggestions? 😀 Can't wait to meetcha.

Hey Liz: I think it would be great if we met up. That's a Sunday I believe, so we can meet up anywhere your interested in seeing. There are alot of places right across from HPD that we could meet up at. My e-mail is [email protected]. Just let me know the details about when you're coming in and then us three can hang. Lookin' forward to meeting you and DancnDr!

PalCareGrl, the Varsity is an Atlanta icon. A somewhat fast-food resturant that serves hot dogs, really greasy fries and onion rings. Not to mention this funky orange froth type drink that I can't remember the name of. It has been a few years since I ate there. Even thought I grew-up in Atlanta I have spent the last five years here in Oxford, MS.

Here here:
The Varsity is the place to be--and the orange thingemabob is the greatest! And let's not offend the onion rings...they aren't "greasy" they're just "nutritionally challenged." 😀
Oh, and all the people at the counter yell at you and say "What-do you have, what do-you have." That's when you say "onion rings and orange thingemabob!"

Wow. Maybe I need to move to Atlanta first for a month or so to experience this mystical and magical place that serves fried food and orange drink thingies... 😀 Sounds pretty cool.

Nema- I will email you and Torre so that we can work out logistics, but I was thinking about dinner on Monday night (18th). Would that be good for you? 🙂

Going to Florida in less than a week.....maybe I won't come back.....

Hey! Is anyone else going to be in town that wants to meet up with future classmates? (almost forgot to ask). Aren't there a couple of people already in the area besides Nema? Post up or email me if you are interested. 😀

I will be in town the beginning or mid of april.
if anyone is planning on being there let me know.

prices for airplane tickets are just too high right now

daniel

What kind of prices are you finding??

I found good prices on yahoo travel..

http://edit.travel.yahoo.com/config/ytravel?source=YG&resform=YahooFlightsR

put in the departing and arriving airports..
then click find best fare.....

After that, it will let you pick your date to see if it's available...

a lot of them require 7 days advance purchase...

for me... from D.C. to Fort Lauderdale.. it's $140 Round Trip..

Mike

Liz: Sounds like a plan...I will be awaiting your e-mail. Can't wait to meet up with your and Torre!

Anyway, how's everyone else doing? The excitement of only having 3 1/2'ish months left set in yet? Hehe! Well, keep posting and I'll chat with you guys later!

Nema

mike,

prices were 180, but now we have found a good deal which is around 145 + tax

I kinda wanted to have a deal just like the one when I interviewed in jan ($120), but then again
spring break is not in january

thanks for your info though

daniel

How are you guys getting around down there once you land...are you all over 25...I know renting a car for me is WAY expensive...just curious what the rest of you guys do for transportation.

shibby,

I am 26 so I will be renting the car.
there will be three of us looking for places to live and we are sharing the costs of hotel, car, etc...

what have you heard as far as prices for rental cars are concerned? and when are you planning on going house/apartment hunting?

Whoa, you guys think your air fare's bad, be glad you're not flying from the midwest! I'm paying 270 and that was a GREAT deal!!

I'm not 25 yet (this summer- July 18 -get ready to party with me cuz you're all invited!!!), but my friend who is over 25 is renting the car in his name. I found a hotel deal at La Quinta in Plantation- only 70 per night (that was pretty good from what I checked online, most things are 85 and above). I used Orbitz for my airfare.

I'll let you guys know of any useful info that I find out while I'm down there next week so you can use it when you go.

Mike- are you going down again before the big move? I'll look for your condo while I'm there - is it within walking distance?

Okay, peace out (yes, I'm a child of the 90's) 😀

thanks liz for the upcoming info and have a safe flight!

daniel

Liz and anyone else meeting up in Ft. Lauderdale- I live in the area and would love to meet you all while you are down, and anyone else that lives locally. Please email me with some info [email protected]. Can't wait to meet everyone!
