I might have been exaggerating the curfew thing. 😉 Well, kinda. The people were barricaded in the last threat of a hurricane and you have to check people in and out. Crap like that.

I haven't looked around here. I just meant in general. I'm heading out today. Most complexes like to do furnished because they can charge 60 or 70 a month extra and everything pays off pretty quick. I'm not sure I want to live right next to campus either. I suspect I will not want to see that building after a few weeks of studying and will want an escape.

Seriously, either way though, furnishing isn't a big deal. Craigslist, Ikea and rent-a-centers go a long way.



On a similar note, I'm looking at places today and plan on taking some photos with my phone. I haven't decided if I want a roommate but I am going to look at 1 AND 2 bedroom places. If anyone wants to live with a relatively quiet guy, into sports, tons of types of music, non-smoker, occasional xbox...standard dude stuff then PM me. I really don't care about gender or anything.

In it, Dr. Whitehead mentioned that in this module we would purchase our laptops and academical society tee-shirts. I haven't completed this webct thing yet, but from what I am gathering from the email is that we have to get the computer through nsu. Does anyone know if this is true? Do we have the option to look elsewhere for a comparable computer?

Try this: Sign into Sharklink, go to the Student tab, under My Courses click "Click here to:", on left click Access WebCT, and then you should see DO Program Pre-Orientation Module.

If it is still not working, then there must be a conspiracy theorist behind it all.

I will check it out. I'm sitting at a coffee shop now. Most of these places seem kind of similar.....expensive. Being walking distance in a single seems nicer and nicer. Still have some sort of student community but none of the normal hassles of roommates. Biggest con is the price, but considering I have no debt, get instate, and will get a little bit of rent spotted by parents then it will probably be ok.

I just feel kind of apprehensive with roommates. It is really a hit or miss thing and nothing personal, but I feel like I don't want to hangout with other first year med students after a day of hanging out with first year med students, at least every night.


Oh, and what is the deal with the reputation thing? Do people not like me? I think I'm pretty reputable...maybe a douchebag at times, but reputable.

I've been thinking about that A LOT lately. So far, with the support of a lot of first and second year medical students, I'm going with a single. The glaring con of this is obviously the cost, but the truth is that I rather eat the cost and be happy and sane while avoiding ANY drama at the home first year.

In addition, I just don't think I want to come home to med students after a day of hanging around other med students. So, at least I have the chance to escape. At the same time, walking distance seems to be ideal because there will still be a student community around you. If you need help or to talk to somebody about something, you can. Sadly, this leads to the highest cost but as many many current students at a variety of schools told me, "You can always find roommates and save money for the next three years."

It is just such a huge change as is and I don't want to factor in the risk of potential roommate drama. It just adds wayyyyyyyy more stress than it is worth. When roommates work it is great. You are all friends and things roll great, but my current luck with roommates is not so fortunate. When you are already spending an obscene amount of money, 2,000-2400 extra dollars seems like a drop in the bucket to me. Nobody said you had to sign a 4 year lease or anything, so you still have the chance to befriend some people and move in if you want!

It can get much worse. It just depends where you are in relation to everything else. I find the drivers here horrendous. I've driven all over and no it isn't LA or DC area, but there are some god awful drivers here. 595 will be really bad, so I'd avoid that too. I was driving around and just thinking how ugly crap here is though. It never ceases to amaze me at how humans can choke the life out of natural beauty. Everywhere I look is concrete and cookie cutter houses. Yea yea yea, great weather blah blah blah. I just feel like once I hit Jupiter or so that it is one extended city with everything looking exactly the same. (I'm probably just bitter from driving around all day right now and not having very solid markers for identification)

That's where I lived when I was in med school and I'm missing it like hell right now!! Definitely the coolest place in the area with lots of things to do, right down the street to the beach, lots of neat places to study, and right by Broward General if you do your rotations there. Check out Camden Las Olas and the Waverly!

Well I've been a TOTAL BUM and have slept more in the past 48 hours then i think I have since I had mono in college. So um. My weekend's GREAT. lol. Going to a penguins game tonight (the losers down here refer to it as a "panthers game" but whatever, I know who I'm going to see!).

To answer the question about traffic. I live on Hiatus and 84. about 4 miles due west of school. What I normally do is hop on 595 in the morning and right the "on/off" lane past nob hill to pine island. Get off on pine island and take that up to SW 30th. On Friday morning (when I actually got my happy @$$ out of bed for class, which was an effort this week) I got into my car at 7:47 am and was in my seat at school by 8:05. I normally like to leave by 7:40 (30 minutes before classes start) so that I can get coffee first).

Am I missing something here? The calendar says that there is indeed a summer semester, but I thought most medical schools did the typical two semesters per year type thing (nova being included in this!).

Your second year starts in July which is considered a summer semester.

There are a lot of nice places in Plantation and I think a good number of med students stay in that area. I would get started calling places because I get the impression that they fill up quick. Will be staying at cameron cove apartments right across the street from the health profession division building. There are a whole bunch of places in plantation that are literally less than 5 min away for students to stay...ive heard from numerous places that they tend to fill up rather quickly, so the sooner you get on it the better.

When I went down to visit the school again back in January, my SO and I had a list of 5 apartments that we wanted to see (We had decided to not even check out on campus housing since we had heard terrible things about it). All of the five apartments were located relatively close to the school, with the furthest being located in Hollywood FL, which still isn't that far. After looking at all of the places it came down to Sunforest apartments (where many students also apparently live) and cameron cove. While Sunforest was nice, we decided on cameron cove based on the fact that the only utilities we would have to pay would be electricity and water (air-conditioning, garbage, gas are included). Also they were offering us a free months rent, which after that was factored in we would end up paying around $928/month + utilities (one of the lower priced apartments that we found). While cameron cove was a bit smaller than some of the other places, the new renovated units were real nice.

As a side note, if you are looking online for apartments beware of the prices listed as they generally are different. If you want a more accurate price, definitly call the place up.

On the opposite side, I chose sunforest between the two. I realized that I was more impressed with the staging of cameron cove than anything else. I was quoted at 940 a month for a one bedroom with vaulted ceilings (I have it on paper so they can't screw me), front door garbage pickup, etc. Cameron cove is about 600 square feet while sunforest is around 800 square feet. I'm a big guy and just liked the extra space. I was really really close to going with cameron cove but I realized that the utilities really won't be THAT much different with me. I use energy saver everything, keep my AC at around 75 when it is on or off when I leave and take about 10 minute showers. I also didn't want to deal with having to walk across university drive when it was raining out. Sunforest is a LITTLE bit closer and you don't have to cross as busy of a road to get to the HPD building. They are both fine places, so it really just comes up to personal preference.

What decision have many of you made in regard to the NSU Endorsed laptop? The information about the entire deal seems fairly scant. All I found on NSU's website was,

"This laptop pricing, including all software, security, warranties, next business day parts and labors, laptop loaner, is $1,521.00 (retail price: approximately $2900.00). This price is provided exclusively to our students by Dell."

I'd really appreciate more information regarding the specifics of the model (is this the vanilla Latitude E6400), the warranty, and the billing. Essentially, this is simply billed to our tuition invoice and is therefore included in the financial aid calculations? Could we simply purchase it out of pocket? etc. etc.

I've had a pretty bad experience with multiple dell laptops. I'm getting my macbook pro and installing bootcamp with a small partition. I am thinking Dr. Whitehead was confused when he said the software didn't work with bootcamp and probably meant parallels. Software doesn't pay attention to that. It is running windows like any other computer would.

Even if I were going with a windows box, I probably wouldn't get dell. I'd check out lenovo, samsung and maybe toshiba. I've had pretty solid experiences with all of those. I know people that liked dell but I had two of them go down in a year and tech support was hell to try and get anything done.

I'm back from apartment hunting in Florida. I really like the Plantation area and will be moving into Lakepointe at Jacaranda. It's 4.0 miles straight up University Drive from Nova. Takes ~8 min without traffic and up to 15 with (I timed it during rush hours). Im getting a renovated 2/2 with my SO. They have a good deal going on right now with rent. If you want more details, pictures, or prices just PM me.

Other than that I will post a couple comments and price ranges sometime in the next couple days for the apartments I looked at for people.

I went down a few weeks ago and looked around Davie. Of the two you mentioned, I liked Sunforest best - it's super close to school (literally right across the street) so I'd never have to deal with traffic and it came with all the amenities that I wanted/needed. Plus, the price was comparable to other places I looked at that were farther away. Palm Trace Landings is owned by the same company (Equity Residential) but it has a longer morning commute and I saw a lot of families there, whereas Sunforest had a lot of professional students walking back from classes.

It is a short distance from campus, on one of the smaller roads, which makes it a short commute. I decided that after a long day at school, I want more separation between my house and campus than just a walk.

Yea, I liked it but I figured separation from campus doesn't matter if I'm living with another med student, which would've been likely.

I have a hard time imagining that any computer purchased within the last 3 years will struggle with the software they require. I was cracking encryptions on a computer that was 6 years old. It took an hour+ for many calculations, but I'm pretty sure a multiple choice test with pictures is not more intensive than code breaking. 😛
