So i'm pretty sure I want to attend NOVA after much deliberation. But I gotta wonder how everything is going during this hurricane season... I just read that Wilma just barreled through Davie, Fl by the school. Is everyone alright? How does class function? what is the general protocol for hurricanes?

I probably understand that they are not as big as the media draws them out to be up here in the north, because I swear its like the 'be-all; end-all' up here on every news station for every storm.

Any input from Fl residents or current students would help.

I'm a FL resident... been here for 17 years. I will tell you that the hurricanes do tear some places to shreds, but it's usually not as intense for the entire state as the media claims it is. When Charlie came through, it demolished Punta Gorda, which is on the opposite side of the state from Ft. Lauderdale. I sat in Ft. Myers, which is about 30-45 mins south of Punta Gorda, while Charlie came through. There was some rain, wind, some houses had their screens around their patios fall down, but nothing too serious in my area.

I wouldn't let it keep you away from Nova. If you'd like to attend the school, then I'd say do it.

Here's a link that may put you at ease... a true display of the media's drama..

I'm not sure how helpful that was.. but if you have anymore questions feel free to PM me.

LOL... that was great!

Yeah, I'm really interested in this school, and with the hurricane that is coming through, my husband, is not liking the idea of living in FL...we're in NC right now. But, we get hurricanes pretty bad here also, so to me it seems like TV makes it worse than what it is. My family back in CA always see a storm on TV near NC and think we're getting flooded, but we're in Raleigh, NC in the middle, and granted we've had bad storms that come through, but it's a little wind and rain and everyone goes crazy!

How many times per year would you say the hurricanes affect classes and school closing???

Thanks!

Not to sound too discouraging but, it's not as downplayed as it may be have been set forth so far, every once in a while we get our Andrews or our Wilmas and then it is not pretty. Other than that it is just some wind and water.

I live about 30 minutes from NSU and it was pretty bad. I have lived here my whole life and have never seen so many trees down on houses, roofs bare of shingles, power poles snapped in half, roads completely blocked. I drove through some nearby trailer parks because some other main roads were totally blocked off and some of those people lost everything. The hurricane came through Sunday and I just got my power restored 2 hours ago (7:30 Wednesday ) among the first in Broward county. Some will not get power for weeks.

Having said all this I am sure the media has replayed the same crap footage over and over. Some of the things I have seen them report on have been so ridiculous I have actually been embarrassed for them. But I wouldn't know b/c as i said we didn't have power.

You would think that floridians would know to keep water, food, and ice on hand so they wont have to wait in hours long lines for 2 bags of ice & water that may or may not be there. Gas too. I can tell you I would eat hot a$$ canned stringbeans and boil (or bleach) contaminated water before I waited in those lines. To be fair though I don't think anyone expected it to be this bad. I know I didn't. It isn't the end of the world down here but it is the worst storm in at least the past 25 years for the Fort lauderdale area.
