Number of LOR's?

What's the rule of thumb regarding the number of LOR's one should request / send? Are >10 strong letters going overboard?

ERAS will only let you upload 4 letters. Most programs only want 3. Get 4 including 1 from your chairman just to be safe because many programs require it. More than that is a waste of time and effort.

Not just a waste of time for you, but a real waste of time for the faculty. It is rude to ask for a LOR, just to have enough, with no intention of using it.
