I'd like to start taking classes for an informal post-bacc. My background is low-GPA (2.6 DO calculation) engineer from a good (not Ivy) school, so I'm a low-GPA career changer. Since I'm still working full time, I'm looking for a community/state college around western Long Island, NY (Queens or Brooklyn area-ish) where I can start taking some of the pre-reqs. Can you guys suggest any schools in the area that offer Organic Chemistry I as an evening class and have decent instructors that give out a lot of A's? Hopefully somewhere that won't be totally frowned upon by the admissions boards?

Hofstra University (in Hempstead, NY) has a formal post-bac program you could apply for (http://www.hofstra.edu/academics/grad/grad_postbacc_premed.html), or you could speak to the director, Ellen Miller, regarding taking just one or a few courses there.

Fordham also has a post-bac program and has campuses in Rose Hill (Bronx), Lincoln Center (Manhattan), and Westchester you could look into as well: http://www.fordham.edu/academics/co...sion/pcs_home/academics/postbaccalaureate_pr/.

Both offer night courses and organic chemistry so I'd recommend calling in to find out.

People have offered you some decent options for you thus far... but it is worth noting, do not go to a CC.

You need to prove you can handle rigorous science courses (esp with a low GPA recovery situation) - and you will not get them at a CC

There's also SUNY Old Westbury, which is in Western Long Island and offers cheap tuition. I think they also have a pre-health advisor as well.

Also, if you plan on driving, you may want to consider not driving if you go to the Queens College or Brooklyn College. I'm not saying parking is impossible, but it is REALLY hard to find, unless you get a pass to park in the lots, which is pretty much lottery-based. (Former Queens College Student who visited Brooklyn College ever so often)

Great info guys, thanks! Any of you happen to know if any of those schools seem to yield higher GPAs on the pre-req's than others? Or any of them have a reputation for being particularly harsh graders?

YOU get a high GPA - the school doesn't give it....

Cool, Rob, thanks for the reply. Anyone else know anything about which if any of these schools has higher GPAs historically for their pre-req classes? Thanks guys

your focus is wrong. its not about the school. its about you.

Stop focusing on where is going to get you a high GPA, and focus on what you need to do to get a high GPA. If you pick a cake-walk school, its not going to help you for the MCAT. And you should be able to get As in intros at whichever 4-year you go to.

Great input Rob, thanks. Anyone else have any info regarding which of these schools historically have higher GPAs in the pre-req classes?
