NYCOM and BSSP for minority students

Hey- I will be starting the BSSP program also, but I was wondering...are you guys planning on staying in the dorms, or have you found places? I went out to Long Island earlier this week and looked at places....most of the places want you to sign june-june (and they're not all that nice!)And all the nice places I saw are ready in September. Did anyone have a similar experience? Has anyone seen the dorms at CWPost? How many people are doing this program anyway????

I know that's a lot of questions...but any info would help!

CONGRADULATIONS!!!!

I'm going to stay in the dorms at LIU/CW post. I've heard that the dorms are ok...no A/C though. It is really not too far from NYCOM. I figured that I would do the dorm thing...find out where good places are when I get things all set. I visited from Boston...could'nt make up my mind on a place yet.

I've heard that between 25-30 students in the participate in the BSSP.

Hello all- I just received a call from one of the students at NYCOM to answer any of my questions. I asked her about the CW Post dorms...she said to make sure to buy/bring a fan since it is extremely hot in the summer...she also said that although the dorms seem close to the school...it is not safe to walk it. So, how many of you are bringing cars??? She said most students just carpool to school. She also told me that the dorms are co-ed and you get to room with one other person. So, if you guys have any other questions...I have her number and I can call her at any time. So, just post your questions here...or email me!

Uh, huh...just kidding, Im not really a Red Sox fan. But living up here, everyone expects you to be one...I've only been to one game though. Fenway is always crazy...things always heat up when the Yankees are in town. I still haven't received any info on the program from the minority affairs office. I keep calling and emailing them. Either they don't write me back or don't call me back. She only called me back once when I was working! ugh!

SO..I have some questions that need to be answered. If you guys or someone you know could answer them..I would appreciate it so much! Does anyone know how late we can check into CW Post? Where are the CW Post dorms located? Where are we meeting on the first day of the program? Why is it I feal so much anxiety?!? ...maybe b/c I am a bit confused about why I still haven't been contacted after all my effort!!

hi everyone!
i am new to this site...been lurking for a while. anywho to mbenavidez..try calling the office today and speak to Esther instead of Denise. I am in your same position as i just got accepted in the middle of May and had yet to receive a letter. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
I was like you calling all the time until i spoke with her.
I will try to answer some of your questions. First the CW Post campus is part of LIU (which is walkable if you do not mind walking on a highway). She said that we could move in between friday June 7 and Sunday JUne 9 (not quite sure what the earliest time is.) Orientation begins @ 11am in the same room where we had the interview. The rooms are $200 a week, so for seven weeks ($1400). There will be about 30 people in the program this summer. Anyway that is about as much as i know. again call the office and ask for esther and she is mad cool and willing to help.

As someone that has been through the BSSP program and has taught students in the program, I would like to give a little advise.

First, take it seriously. If you fail a test or two, then you are done. That's it.

Some prof's give practice questions. Do the practice questions. If you can't answer the practice questions off the top of your head then you aren't ready for the test.

Use the tutors but before you see a tutor for a subject, try to at least read over the stuff. That doesn't mean that you need to look up every little factoid on your own. Just read.

Ask students that have made it through the program, how they made it through. What were their tactics? Did they have any advice, study aids, etc.

Don't let people stress you out. Put distance between yourself and people that seem toxic to your study environment. This is your shot. Be sure to use it well. You are not guaranteed a spot just because you are in the BSSP. You have to complete the program successfully to be guaranteed a spot in the first year class. Do your work and you'll be fine. But it is work.

Sorry to paint a rough picture, but I didn't do it last year and people that I anticipated making it through the program, didn't.

This is the female (better) half of DOnut a.k.a. "Ariel", which was given to me by a very special person. Guess what? WE MADE IT!!! We are officially med students! I am soooo happy....I am just sitting around going to the gym, sleeping, and just being LAZY. I hope some of you are doing the same, since it is WELL deserved.
