Did any non-NY residents receive an interview invite yet? How many spots on average are alotted in the incoming class for out of staters?

As of my interview on 12/7, everyone was still in-state. I think they don't start with out-of-state until January, although there may be a few people coming up in December. Either way, they are just starting them now. I have no idea how many people are in-state/out-of-state. They have 300 students in the class though which makes them the second largest medical school class size (either DO or MD). So, there are a lot of spots to fill. 😀 :luck:

where did you here that they may start for out-of-staters in December?

I am not positive if they are doing out-of-state in December or not. I know that they were not planning on starting until January, but they have open interview spots in Decemeber and I thought they might fill some of them with out-of-state applicants. When I called to reschedule my interview from 11/30they had the first two weeks in December totally open so I got to pick my day and time. I think they must only be interiewing through the 14th because that was the last date available to reschedule it. I assumed that was because they were breaking for my holidays after the 14th. When I was at my interview, one of the staff was talking about financial aid and made a reference about TAP. Then she said, "I am pretty sure you are all in-state still." But, the way she said it made me think that they were on the verge of starting out-of-state interviews. I don't know if they will do out-of-state in December or not, so sorry if I got everyone all excited over nothing. I just thought that they may because they still have some openings. Good luck to everyone!😀 :luck:

I think it's more of a regional(NYC Metro) preference rather than just NY state alone. Almost all my friends at school along with myself are from NJ and mostly North Jersey at that.

bumpity bump

any out of staters get an interview yet?

i think i recall reading some thread with a few people from jersey and florida interviewing...still regional...i was the one who was told directly by nycom that they wouldn't start looking at out-of-state applications until sometime in january. hope that helps.

even though i'm from jersey, i'm pretty close to the region. i still count myself as out of state though - i'm sure the majority of the interviewees have been from NY. hopefully i'll be hearing something after the holidays. anyone else from north jersey not hear anything either?

Wait, where is Florida? LOL! That isn't regional.🙄 (Sorry!)

There was another NYCOM out-of-state thread or discussion and someone posted something about having people from jersey and florida in their interview group. Ok, so maybe FL isn't New England, but don't all you New Yorkers have time-shares out there? All I know is, I haven't heard of any midwesterners or west coasters interviewing yet...🙁

LOL! I actually technically had someone from Maryland in my interview group, but he grew up in Queens, his parents still lived in Queens, and I think he was in the military or something and that was why he had moved. There really is a big in-state and regional preference, so I think that they save anyone else for the absolute last spots. :luck:

At one of my other interviews, there was a NY resident who had interviewed at NYCOM a week earlier, and he told me they have a preference for in-state. I am out-of-state (PA) and still have not heard anything from them! I'm assuming I'll hear within the next coming months, though that creates a predicament for me, since I have an acceptance already, and the deposit is due soon!!

Do any of you guys know if NYCOM accepts Canadians?
A girl in my class is from Toronto originally; although, I believe she did her undergrad at NYIT.

What no one seems to know is why...

Hey guys,
I just spoke to the admissions office, and for anyone who's interested and to whom this applies: It was directly communicated to me that out-of-staters with less than a 26 are hopeless. They literally started looking at out-of-state applications yesterday. 516 686 3747
Just thought I'd share.

they literally said anyone under a 26 is hopeless? that would be kind of rude. or is that how you felt? lol

Hey All I'm kind of in a predicament: I got an interview from nycom over my winter break from school. I'm instate ...but far northern NY and below a 26 by the way, but i was accepted at my only interview so far- at LECOM erie. That wasn't my top choice, however, UNECOM was. I've been hearing all along that UNECOM looks at more than just mcat score and i was hopeful that i would get an interview. Last week though i got a rejection letter from UNECOM..they didn't even give me a chance to interview. This doesn't seem that much of a predicament cause I still have my nycom interview right?? no I emailed them to decline it before i found out about UNECOM. I thought then that I didn't want to go to a school with that big of a class size, that it was expensive to live in the area...and other reasons. But then today I got another email saying "return to sender" because my original one to nycom never got there for some reason. So they don't know!!! Now I need some advice...be happy with my choice before and decline again ( i mean I still have yet to hear from two schools and im already accepted at LECOM....or go to the interview?? Maybe I'll leave a spot for an outofstater if i don't go.

lol. some people get lucky, like you 😉

I'd go ... NYCOM is a much better school than LECOM-Erie I think ... you even said LECOM-Erie wasnt your top option ... go for it.

literally and in general as far as out-of-staters go...ask for Ms. Croot

ok, you can go ahead and call me crazy.. but its almost like fate that your email never made it to them! im all about options, so i think its a good idea to go. Hey, another acceptance certainly cannot hurt you!!!

good luck 🙂

it certainly doesnt hurt to interview!! plus it will give u a better idea of the school and area when u see it in person, whether its positive or negative. you will know you gave it a chance!

:luck:

i guess so then 😕 when i spoke to her, she didn't mention anything.

Don't quote me on this, but I suspect Jersey is not as *out-of-state* as the west coast...Not sure why exactly (and to my knowledge, no one on SDN has verified why NYCOM has a state/regional preference).
I didn't bother to ask Ms. Croot about that part!

yeah, the feeling i got, in person and on this board from current students is that they have an area preference, not so much just new york. so i guess that gives some of us extra hope. :luck:

That stinks. I got a letter yesterday asking for my LOR's; I guess it was a standard letter that they send to everyone who sends a primary in. My MCAT is below 26, so I guess I won't even worry about sending the LOR's in. Anyone think that I should even bother with the letters? Thanks.

I say send them in. You got this far and they only send you a secondary if you interview. That means no more money unless it is good news. :luck:

LOL! I had a similar situation. I withdrew most of my applications after I got my DCOM acceptance, including NYCOM. But, they never got the email I sent and sent me a letter to interview anyway. I wasn't really interested in the school, but I went thinking that it was "fate". I was actually really impressed with NYCOM, but withdrew post-interview because of the high COL and location. I think you should go. What does it hurt anyway? It is a good school and you may actually like it.:luck:

I agree with Dr.Mom...I love people at NYCOM, they are very friendly and the school is great!

DoctorMom78 I wish I could have a friend and classmate like you, you are always very nice and supportive🙂 🙂 🙂

Thank you! You are welcome to come to DCOM with me, but you won't be seeing me at NYCOM. I hope everything works out for you though. We can still be SDN friends. Kind of the same I guess.🙂

when i talked to ms. croot, she said that they favor NY residents because it follows with their osteopathic philosophy to also educate and serve new york. after they go through the new yorkers, they go to the tri-state area. then i'm guessing other regions after that. i hope that helps 🙂

I thought you lived out of state?

LOL! No, I have lived my whole life around Albany, NY. In just a few short months I will no longer be a NY State resident. Good bye high taxes!!!!:meanie: 😀

😕 I fail to see the connection there. 🙄 Weird. Thanks for the info though.
