Does anyone know what the question number 6 means in "student loan entrance interview" form? I don't have any loan in my undergrad. What do you guys fill out in the blacks below?

It says:

"The current holder of my loan is ________
My guaranty agency* is __________
I will be notified in writing if my loan is transferred to a new holder. I must direct all future correspondence to the new holder"

Also in the "Preliminary application for finantial aid", if I check on the box that says "request maximum allowed", would I be able to take less than max amount if I don't want full amount later?

It's weird to apply and fill out a form when you don't know how much you will be getting?

For the first question, I would just put Not Applicable or something like that. For the other thing, I would put request maximum amount. I don't think you have to take everything they offer you. Of course, I could be wrong, so to be safe, call on Monday and ask.

Does anybody planning to use lender other than NYCOM? I want to use T.H.E. I e-mailed fin aid,but I will be appreciated if anybody will tell me how much paperwork involved if I want to use lender other than NYCOM....🙂 🙂 🙂

I just called the financial aid office because I wasn't sure myself. They told me that the federal loans will just barely cover tuition and fees. If you're paying out of pocket, then you'll need less. She asked me if I was paying out of pocket and I told her I want to try to pay something out of pocket, but I'm not sure yet how much I would be able to pay. So the way she explained it to me, if you request the maximum amount, it comes in 2 installments. If you find that you don't need that money, you can ask them to lower the amount of money you get in the second installment. So say you borrow maximum amount, that would be something like $42,500 I think. The first installment would be half that, say $21,250. If you find that you don't need that money, you can ask them before the money comes in for the second installment to lower it to whatever you want, say $10,000.

At least, that's how I understood it. This financial aid stuff is confuddling.

Thanks for the info. I called the school this morning as well. The lady told me not to worry about it now because I can make adjustments later. She didn't explained me in detail though. She told me that I have all years to make decision. lol... So, I just checked "max request" and sent the applications an hour ago.

She also told me that they haven't set the tuition for this year yet, although it should be around 42k. If you don't take insurance, miuns 4 k from that amount.

P.S: does anyone apply for DPC? I decided not to because I believe lectures will help me more.

Hi all, Ill be attending this year as well. I called the office about the same question a few days ago and they also told me not to worry about it right now. Also, they said it was still to early to apply for gradplus loan as well. Apparently we could apply for that anytime of the year, even though i believe it said that gradplus deadline is may 1st.

Its unusual that a school would make you apply for financial aid b4 they even know how much its going cost

I did, it works better for me 🙂

Hi guys,

I'm attending NYCOM in the Fall as well! Anyone know when classes start? Also, I have no idea where to live. Does anyone know the area well enough to give me an idea of where might be a good middle ground between the school and downtown Brooklyn?

Looking forward to meeting you all!

Jo

Has anyone started thinking about apartments yet? What neighborhoods are you looking in? I'm looking for a studio or one bedroom (living with people I don't know is not my thing, maybe second year I'll try for a roomate). Also, anyone know how much time it normally takes to find an apartment. Say I want to movve in August 1, when should I start scoping things out?

I applied to DPC too, maybe we'll see each other there. (Lectures never did anything for me, I ended up ignoring the lecturer when I was forced to go.)

I think I'm going to end up staying in Brooklyn. But if you're going to find a place, might as well find one as close as possible, like in Westbury or Jericho; however, all those places are a bit expensive and there aren't many apartment buildings there, so it can be difficult and you might have to look further out.

Welcome to the NYCOM family mkopp1985 and joferreri!!!

I would rather just live close to the school, but my boyfriend works in downtown Brooklyn and I'm trying to find a happy medium. I'd really like to just end up in Brooklyn but I am afraid of how long it might take to get ot school in the AM. I'm not a fan of the BQE/LIE traffic! I think I may commute from my parents in Staten Island for the first month or two and see how it goes, then figure out an apartment.... not ideal but I'm aiming to take out as little as possible in loans...these interest rates are killing me!

Just so you guys know, Lecture kids and DPC are together for the first month and a half (during fundamentals) so you'll all meet each other no matter what curiculum you are in!

joferreri, have you considered Queens? It seems to lie between school and Brooklyn, and you get to avoid the BQE as a bonus. But yes, I guess there’s no ideal solution.

And damn, I forgot all about the beginning of school, I’m getting way too far ahead of myself. Will try to slow down and take it easy.

I was considering commuting from Staten Island also for the first month or so. Its such a pain though in the mornings. Staten Island traffic, then brooklyn traffic on the belt followed by LI traffic on the LIE.....😱
Thats like losing at least 3 hours a day (for the round trip). I dont think its worth losing all that time though.

Can anyone tell me approx when i should start looking for apartments if i want to move in say around first or second week of august.

dichroism - I did consider queens and would be happy to end up there, but I have a thing for Bklyn. I think it's where I might want to end up permanently, I was just hoping maybe there was somewhere there that is easy to get to school! But Queens does seem the most convenient...

mkopp - Where in SI would you commute from? I feel the exact same way you do b/c I don't think we'll have 3 hours a day to commute. Although isn't there audio of the lectures? Maybe we can download them and listen on an ipod. I mean, what's better than traffic from SI to Long Island during rush hour and listing to med school lectures 😛

I live in the New Dorp area. Few blocks from the high school.

I live in queens now and plan on continuing to live there next year too because it is really convenient - i had to drop something off at NYCOM last week and it took me about 25 minutes to get there from Fresh Meadows. With traffic it could take closer to 45 minutes, but at the hour we will be driving to make an 8am class, traffic should be fairly minimal. I live at home, so my room and board is free 🙂D ) but about five minutes from my house are a few different areas - some are apartment buildings, some with two family houses - basically, theres a whole bunch of places in queens that are convenient drives to NYCOM.

My parents are in Huguenot and that's why I don't want to commute. If we lived in New Dorp or somewhere closer to the bridge, it would be so much better! I forgot that we had 8 am classes (not forgot, but blacked that out!), that actually is a good point about traffic! I think I"m going to wait it out a bit still and see what my mood is in July for housing 🙂

Currently looking at all options for housing, but I was just wondering if someone could suggest any towns to search for on Craigslist while I am sitting at my computer other than Westbury, Glen Cove, and Hicksville-- the closer to NYCOM the better. Also, I seem to recall someone mentioning Planet Fitness or something similar in terms of workout facilities that offer a student rate; any information is appreciated. Cheers--

You can try Carle Place, which is nearby. Also, maybe you can find somebody renting an apartment in Roslyn. Normally, it's ridiculously expensive, and it's a very wealthy area, but maybe somebody will be renting some rooms at a decent price.

Hey guys... add me to the NYCOM list for 2011....CONGRATS to everyone....here we go.... 😀

When is everyone planning to move? I feel like if I want to move August 1,it's too early to be visiting places now, no? Is anyone planning on moving earlier?

I was wondering the same thing! I would rather move in august but that also depends on when my rent begins..

Im looking to move in beginning of august as well.

Yea Def in August. I want to be totally settled in, get myself into a routine and get the lay of the land (get to know the area) before all the **** hits the fan. Im still lookin for a roomate or maybe more. So if anybody is interested... just send me a message and I'll get in touch with you...

There was a previous discussion about setting up a meeting, but as far as I am aware, nobody came through. I think a meet up will be great. It will allow us to potentially find roomates.

Boo.. I cant meet-up I live in Buffalo...Can you say SOL? 🙁

Hi everyone, I've been keeping up with all of your posts here on the forum(though I rarely post) and am looking forward to meeting everyone in the fall! I too will be looking for places to live and potential roomate(s). I will be heading to L.I. frequently to check out some houses/apartments and would definitley like to meet up. Let me know if you all plan something.

MOE- your not that "SOL" - I too currently live in Buffalo, and from what I gather there are a bunch of us from Buffalo to Syracuse that will be heading to NYCOM this fall.

Attention NYCOM Class of 2011 apartment seekers:

I will be starting at NYCOM this fall, and I am now looking for 2 roommates for a house in Glen Cove. If you are interested, please PM me and I can send you more information (location, rent, dates, etc.).

Some comments from the current tenant, also a NYCOM student, who will be leaving (as will his two roommates) to be closer to clinicals:

"I really lucked out with the house. The location, landlord, drive to school, proximity to the train, gym...I could keep going."

"It worked out really well...it's definitely one of the nicest places I've seen any of the students living in...very roomy, 3 bedroom and 2 and half bathrooms, big kitchen, backyard, washer/dryer in the basement...house is the perfect distance from the train, just close enough to walk it and far enough to not really hear it."

Any of the Buffalonians getting together? 😀

When do you plan on leaving for school? Did you find housing yet?

Planning on heading down in August. Haven’t found a place yet because it’s becoming more and more apparent that unless I plan on spending over $1000/month on rent, I’m going to need some roommates…

The further from school you're willing to go, the cheaper rent gets. You could probably find a studio for $800-900 if you search around and are willing to drive about 15 mins or so.

Just some housing advice...find housing West of NYCOM, not east (south is ok too or southwest).

If you're East of NYCOM you're going to be with city traffic and it could take you a while to get to school. If you're east of NYCOM (even north shore of queens is ok and reasonable) you'll be against traffic and you shouldn't have problems getting to school.

soo... for someone like me, who's from boston and doesn't know ny at all, what towns are your recommending?

Did anyone complete the master promissary note for the stafford loan yet online? and does anybody know if we have to do that each year?

I keep hearing about this apartment complex in Glen Cove here many students live. Someone referred to it as "little NYCOM". Does anyone know ehere that is exactly and how I can get a place there?

Thanks!

And if they could let me know as well, I'd appreciate it

Saw your post about the financial aid issues.
I have not received anything from the Fin. Aid office yet.
Every time I call, they tell me that they have not sent things out
yet. When did you receive paperwork from them??
I was accepted back in January. A little lost about what is going on.

Thanks for your help,
Neocyto

Any in the surrounding nassau county are fine: Hicksville, Glen Cove, Sea Cliff, Rosyln, Albertson, Williston, Mineola, Westbury, Bayville, Port Washington, Manhasset, New Hyde Park just to name a few I can think of off the top of my head. Mapquest it to see how many miles they are from school and go from there. Being able to get to school without using the LIE or Northern Parkway is a good idea; use backroads.

You only need to do the master promissory note 1 year...

In terms of towns...

On LI- a lot of the good ones were mentioned, I'll repeat some:

wantagh, bellmore, massapequa, mineola, great neck (probably a little expensive), glen cove, roslyn (some parts aren't as expensive as others), bethpage, etc. Long Island is overall a pretty affluent area and you can't really go wrong if you're close enough to school and not out east on the north shore because you'd hit city traffic, use mapquest to see the towns assuming you're using craigslist.

In terms of queens, try Fresh Meadows, little neck, douglaston, some areas of flushing, perhaps as far as forest hills or kew gardens are all very nice and you can probably find better deals in those areas. You're also moving against traffic so even though you'd take the LIE or northern state it shouldn't be that bad unless you plan on going to NYCOM around 5PM.

I know of a very nice place with 2 BRs for $800 a month utilities aside from cable included but it's a secret, haha...shhhhhhhhh

From Forest Hills queens you can get to NYCOM in about 25min if you leave by 715am. Anything after that is a gamble. forest hills is sandwiched between Kew Gardens and Rego Park so those should take about 25 min as well. Living in Queens is a good option if you have family, SO, etc. Try to live near the highway especially if you are looking in Flushing.

If I did not have family, SO, etc. I would definitely try to live near NYCOM in the locations suggested by gobiggreen and plasticman.

Hi guys and congrats on acceptance! I am at NYCOM finishing my second year and understand what an accomplishment getting into med school is. I am doing my third year in NJ, so my apartment will be available during the summer. I live in a one bedroom apartment in a private home. The apartment itself new (I'm the first person to live here) and really nice- marble, tile, etc. The family who lives upstairs is awesome- 30ish, 2 kids, easy to deal with, no demands, etc. I've been here for the whole two years and it's really been great for me. My rent is 1200 a month including everything= utilities, cable, tv, dsl, etc. Anyone interested please let me know.

i received my financial aid application package about a month ago... i was accepted in november....good luck
