NYCOM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys... i just got an interview invite for feb : )

i was wondering how you guys prepared.. what interview day was like.. how long did it take to hear back from the school....

chocolate24, congrats on the interview invite! The interview itself is very relaxed. Its one on one for 15-30 minutes. The questions asked are very standard such as why you want to be a doctor, why DO, tell me about your research etc. I prepared for the interview by looking over the questions asked in the SDN interview feedback. I also read over my application and made sure I was familiar with the research I did in undergrad. I was not asked any tough questions. Just be yourself, smile, and im sure you will be fine. The hardest part with NYCOM is getting the interview invite. I believe they accept 2/3 of the interviewees. Ur almost there! 🙂 Good luck!

thanks hokie... do you know how often the admission committee meets or how long it took you to get a response after the interview?

not exactly sure. I interviewed in mid november and heard back a month later. There were a few who interviewed in first week of december and heard back a week and a half later. It seems like there is no set date and they get together whenever time permits in their schedules!

I have an interview set up for Feb 3rd also. When is your interview Chocolate24?

NYCOM isn't one of my top choices, but it is a school i wouldn't mind going to... trafiic, ugh.

I might as well ask if anyone will be interviewing on January 13????

mine is feb 11- seems kind of late.. but that was the earliest they had when I called.

NYCOM starts and ends their interview cycle pretty late compared to other schools. They'll probably be interviewing well into March and April, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Good luck. 👍

For those planning on going to NYCOM and need to arrange housing near the school, what plans do you have in place to do so? Does the school provide any information? Unfortunately, a 1.5 hr commute from Rockland County, NY when there is no traffic will be too much of a hassle.

not sure if the school provides any info, but ill probably rent out a room in a house with other NYCOM students.. not sure of the details.. ill probably start looking into it around May.

lots of people use the facebook groups to find roomates/houses. hit up your 2013 page and maybe even 2012/2011 when spring rolls around.

Does anyone know what the board scores are for COMLEX/USMLE for NYCOM? Does NYCOM provide any board prep and time for board prep?

Can any current student give an accurate number for tuition? The handouts from the interview and other numbers don't match up. I've heard and read anywhere from 38 to over 50....thanks for the help!

rightfooted, I would not dwell on board scores. every year is different and your board score will be a reflection of the time you put into school, not vice versa. also, since there was recently a curriculum change, any old board scores are pretty much irrelevant until the first class with the new curriculum takes their boards (2011--this summer).

nomembername, estimate about 40k without insurance and without living expenses.

Eudjinn, would you know if NYCOM has a prep course for the COMLEX exam and if so, is this included with the current tuition/fees? Do the students take a sample test in advance? Does NYCOM prescreen who can sit for the exam?

i do not know the answer to any of these questions. perhaps a 2nd year can chime in.

good luck to those that are interviewing this month!

anyone planning on attending the open house on the 16th? might take my parents so they can see where I will be spending my next four years. I know a few that have also said they will be attending on our class forum

I am coming to the open house and perhaps bringing a parent. Can you tell me the link to the class forum?

To those who interviewed - what were some of the interview questions you encountered?

NYCOM seems to ask pretty easy questions. Personally, I got something along the lines of "Why NYCOM", "Why DO", and "What do you know about osteopathy?". The interview was relatively short, so don't be scared if yours ends up shorter than you would have expected. Good luck!

And I'm going to the open house as well! 😀 I'm bringing my girlfriend and my mom. It'll certainly be a strange feeling visiting with the knowledge that i'm going there next year.

Thanks for the info!

To tell you the truth the open house is not much different then the interview. I know cuz I did both last year. If you really want to know what its like to spend a day there - I could give you my fiances email and set something up (with her or one of her friends). But in all honesty, and by the time next year rolls around, your gonna wish you spent one less day there lol

In either case its gonna be a great education! Congrats!!

Thank you. Hey, don't ruin my fun; I can still enjoy myself before I start!

Actually, my brother went and graduated from there and I've met a bunch of people, both current and former students, so I've gotten a somewhat good idea of what I might expect. Except for DPC, which I haven't gotten much feedback on.

1) You can take Kaplan at a discounted price. It's not included with tuition. 2) No sample test as far as I know. 3) No prescreening for boards.

Boards scores are not released to students, so we don't know. Classes end May 13th for us this year and we have to schedule and take the COMLEX by June 26th. So we have about 4 weeks to study.

Page 8 of the student handbook: http://iris.nyit.edu/nycom/Student_Handbook_2008-2009.pdf

$39,895

Just be careful when you say tuition that you don't mean total cost of attendance. Those numbers are different 🙂 Roughly add $20,000 to the above to cover living expenses.

does anyone know anything about nycom's 3rd/4th year rotations?

http://iris.nyit.edu/nycom/Academics_Clinical_Clerkships.htm (these may be changing this year)

In general you will do them at a NYCOM affiliated hospital. I don't have the list of hospitals right now, but they include St. Barnabas in the Bronx, Nassau university medical center, North Shore LIJ, St vincent's midtown, Maimonides, etc. There's several hospitals all over New York where you can choose to do your rotations.

when is the open house again?

i dont think i'll be able to go since i work... but since you guys are going.. makes me wanna go too, hehe 🙂 Maybe i'll call in sick..

Lol i wouldnt dream of ruining the fun! As for DPC, to me it seems like one of those things that you would know works for you. In the open house they didn't go into too much detail about it - but if you ask a lot of questions you can steer the conversation towards it. During my time, tons of people seemed to ask about financial aid questions which wasn't too helpful to me personally (because they cover all of it in the literature if they just chose to read it).

In any case I may see you there. My interview is the 22nd so hopefully I'll have better luck this time i guess.:luck:

Thanks jp for the info, i meant straight tuition so thats good to know. The problem is in the financial aid info they give out at the interview one page says the 38 number, then the next gives 42 and change for the class of 2012 year one and they project a 7% yearly increase (which I was told isn't really the case)...so i just wanted a firm grasp of how much cash I'm gonna be shelling out over the next four years...

The open house is on Friday, January 16th from 1-3 pm. You should call in sick; I won't tell. 😀

Heyy guys! I'm also going to post this in the c/o 2013 thread, but anyone who has sent the deposit in already - has NYCOM cashed your check yet. Also, if so, about how long did it take them to do so after you sent it in.

Thanks for the help!

cochan-
the manhasset train station may be your best bet...i think its like a 30 min ride on the port washington line from penn station....then its about a 5-10 min drive or so down northern blvd....

by car is a whole other beast...totally depends on time of day and where in manhattan your coming from....i wouldn't wish that traffic in rush hour on my worst enemy. If I had to guess time from the midtown tunnel (because it lets out onto the LIE which is the most direct way to go) you have anywhere from a 30 min to 1.5 hour drive (really rough numbers)

About the open house next friday...

Do you HAVE to RSVP in order to attend? Or can you just show up? It totally escaped my mind.

i just submitted my primary to them last week. What are the chances of receiving a secondary this late? I have above average stats...Also does anyone know the questions on the secondary? I appreciate any help.

They don't have a traditional secondary app with questions.

I'm moving this to the NYCOM Discussion thread, where you'll find and attract answers from those familiar with the school. 🙂

First and foremost, let me express my condolences for not getting into allopathic schools with your above average stats and thank you for your interest in using DO schools as a last chance hail mary attempt at going to medical school this cycle.

Second, the chances are not good. As mentioned, anyone applying this late with "above average stats" is pretty much viewed as an allopathic reject scrambling to get in. It is not impossible, however, to get in at this point. I know someone who applied in February and got in (3 years ago though). If you are lucky enough to get an interview, better be sure you know everything there is to know about DO schools or run the risk of being weeded out as said allopathic reject.

Good luck.

Can a current nycom student tell me the actual policy for student who fail an exam or a module during their education? I've read on some posts that the automatic response is to be expelled from nycom, is this true?

Does the tuition stay the same for the four years of attendance? I am reading conflicting answers. Some people say it goes up about 7% a year and some say that the tuition for the next entering class will be $42,000 and will remain so for all four years. What is the correct answer?

they make it really hard to fail. you really have to not study for all of the tests IMO to fail a system totally... considering that OMM scores factor into overall score (omm scores are usually high) it's all that harder to fail the system. failing an exam has no real issues unless you fail the system cumulatively...

if you do, you have to remediate in the summer. i think if you fail 2 in the year you may be dismissed. i don't know a single person who failed out or even failed a system.

I was just wondering, since I want to fill out my FAFSA soon...

When does NYCOM send out its financial aid package to accepted students?

What are some highlights that NYCOM offers there students? Any combined programs?

I sent in my secondary at the end of December, does anyone know when I would hear about an interview, if I get one. Thanks folks.

I don't think anyone here could give you a definite time frame because it depends upon several variables - your also in the peak of the application season it seems. Hopefully soon though!

kow-
when you receive the secondary you have to call and schedule a date (because they only send secondaries to those who they wish to interview)...also you don't send in a secondary, you bring it with you to the interview

chocolate-
1500...looks really nice coming out of your checking account

meh, Edujinn, i'm in your class (2012), applied in February. got an interview invite a week later, interviewed a week later was accpeted a week after that. They knew i was an allo reject and still wanted me. This was last year too. I also applied to 3 other DO school THAT late in Feb and they all also interviewd me. So, gopens67, go ahead and apply. It can't hurt.

OH, i also didnt have a DO LOR and for sure did not know everything there is to know about DO schools...

Hey Guys, here is my situation:

31P MCAT, 3.56 Overall, 3.29 Science ( 3.9 last 2.5 years of college, with all A's in upper division science courses)

Have volunteered at a homeless clinic for 4 years, worked as a phleb for 3 years, student gov't in college, alcohol and drug awareness program mentor, Big Brother for Big Brothers Big Sisters(Big Brother of the Year 2008 for my city-chosen among 1700 others), two undergrad research projects, 2 years post-grad research (no pubs), Volunteer healthcare for the homeless research project (ongoing), Organized a fundraiser (2K for breast cancer) and various others......I'll spare you!!!

Would it be ridiculous to still apply?

I recently shadowed a DO, and was very impressed. Did some research and I really like the philosophy. Currently I have had 2 MD interviews with decisions pending, and 7 MD schools to hear from.

Any advice would be much appreciated!
