NYCOM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

I would. BTW why did you not apply DO at the beginning of the cycle ? There really is no guarantee at any MD schools. I have better numbers than you but applied DO back in July and am very happy that I did considering that I have no MD acceptances yet. It amazes me that people who would go to DO school as a backup just dont apply at the beginning. Why do people do this ?

Most pre-meds do not even hear about DO schools until they realize they need to find other ways to become a doctor. It is a shame, but what is there to do?

Anyone interviewing tomorrow? Hope it goes well, see you guys there if you are reading this!!!

Good luck, MKG87! Don't stress; the interviews are fairly easy and laid back.

Here's hoping we'll be classmates!👍

Yes, I'm interviewing tomorrow in the 11:00am slot.

Good luck MurnBurn32! :luck:

I just received the Student Immunization form from NYCOM (I was hoping for something more useful...). It states: "The following Student Immunization form must be received by Registrar's Office one month after submitting your deposit to NYCOM."

What the heck is up with the strict deadlines, NYCOM?! :annoyed:

Do they mean a month after I mailed it out ('cause it's already been a month)? A month after they received it? A month after they cashed it? And why do they even want it so quickly?! What happens if they don't receive it a month after? 😕

Sorry for the rant, guys; I know I sound neurotic. I just don't get it. Why make me worry when I already got in? 🙁

relax. just start working on getting the forms in. don't worry about deadlines nobody is going to chop your head off.

you just wont be able to order soup from the cafeteria.

OK, so i have some questions about the interview I just had. They put me in a HALLWAY that was COLD. Just sat for an hour, then called for an interview. The guy who interviewed me really just talked about himself for about 1/2 the interview, i think i knew more about him than he knew about me. I was expecting the anatomy lab too be a bit nicer. It didn't seem as clean as i thought it was going to be or as compared to other schools. Everyone at the school was very friendly. I think that it was overall a very unstructured interview day, but all went well......

I didn't realize how expensive NYCOM is....does anyone know if you can apply for the agreement to serve in an undeserved region in NY state before begginning school there in the fall?

Sorry about the rant, just had to let it loose......

1. doctors and phd types like to toot their own horn. no shock there.
2. anatomy is a dirty science. if the lab looks like martha stewarts house, I'd be worried if learning is actually taking place. we also have been recently working with bone saws so apologies if it was not up to your standards of cleanliness!
3. most DO schools are pretty pricy and yes our students are pretty cool for the most part, except theserbatron. beware of him.

Ugh. Just got a Waitlist letter today - looks like I'm the first for this cycle. Interviewed 11/11, which made me pretty hopeful. Oh well, we'll see what happens!

Sorry to hear that, dude. I interviewed on 11/11 as well; I hope you'll hear good news in the end! 🙂

Yay, the open house is tomorrow! Does anyone know if they offer a tour of the facilities?

if you guys want to meet me, and I suggest you do because I am pretty amazing, I'll be at the anatomy lab starting 10:30.

The open house is 1-3 PM today. It changed from 4-6. Does anyone have any details about it?

To any current students:

Is there an "accepted students day" for those who will be entering the school the following year?

Yeah...1st day of orientation

In all seriousness, they were trying to have a bbq w/ the deans thing a month or so before school started. They started with my class (2011) but I don't know if they did it again for 2012 or 2013. It was experimental and not everyone was invited. Still, I thought it was a nice thing to do before school started 🙂

man, you REALLY want the red carpet rolled out for you don't you!

relax man. when the time comes, you will be sick of coming to school and being at school (possibly of the "accepted students" too!) so enjoy every minute of not having to do anything nycom related.

I submitted my deposit in person yesterday after attending open house. I'm even more excited now hahaa ^^ can't wait to start in August!

Anything interesting at the open house? I, unfortunately, was unable to make it due to weather considerations (I commend you 👍) and my feeling pretty sick. I'm really hoping I didn't miss something interesting, 'cause then I'll feel truly bad. 🙁

you didn't miss a thing. They basically showed us a video made by AACOM introducing osteopathic medicine, and then another video of the vice president talking about NYCOM. They then opened the floor for questions followed by a tour of the facilities. They basically talked about everything they told us at the interview and how/when prospective student sshould apply.

Well, you did miss the tour when they went into the anatomy lab and you saw all us first years looking at sliced up heads. I bet it was a shock for some of the parents to walk into lab and see all these heads and all these first years looking at them so intently...

Are you ever warned ahead of time when there will be a large amount of strangers entering the lab? I can imagine that it can be distracting. Or amusing. 😀

I can't wait to look at sliced-up heads!

hey guys,

I have a 29 mcat with a gpa of ~3.5. I applied in septmbr and got interviewed on 1/13. Interview was pretty easy going. NYCOM is my top choice and i'm really worried about getting accepted. Do I have a good shot at getting in???
oh and i'm instate. Wow really nervousssss about this one!!!!:scared::scared:

29 mcat 👍
~3.5 gpa 👍
interviewed 👍
instate 👍

If you feel your interview went well, I would say you have a good shot. NYCOM starts interviewing about two months later than most other schools, so don't think the class is full yet or anything. 🙂

Good luck! :luck:

Assuming you have decent LOR's/volunteering, if the above information is correct and you feel good about your interview, I would say you have a 90-95% chance of acceptance.

Disclaimer: this is my personal opinion.

I submitted my primary in October, and aacomas finalized the application around November. I have 31 on mcat, 3.47 gpa. pretty similar to ur stats. I have 2 years experience working in a medical office and some volunteer. So can you tell me when you heard interview message from nycom? I am still waiting...:scared:

hang in there. nycom generally doesn't have any specific "order" that they follow as far as I know, except for possibly inviting in-state folks earlier (are you OOS?)

there is still plenty of time to get that interview!

Your answer has relieved me a lot. I am instate resident, living in NYC. The problem is I have an interview from Touro on feb 10th. If they accept me, I will not know what to do. Do you know how long a medical school allows students to decide on attending the school? I just need to know a really rough estimate.

I believe Touro will give you only two weeks to decide after your acceptance. 👎

This is what i have seen from somewhere in SDN. I am just not sure about the 2 weeks deadline. I am really desperate attending any med school this year. That's why i am somehow concerned about nycom application. Maybe i will just waste $2000 deposit on touro in order to go to nycom.🙁

you probably cannot avoid paying the 2k touro deposit if you get in because even if you were to get an interview invite in the mail tomorrow from nycom, by the time you schedule it, go to it and hear back, the 2 weeks will be up and you don't want to pass on a seat to medical school...

if you pay your deposit and nycom comes through, you eat the 2k and go nycom. really not a big deal. it's the beginning of many ridiculous expenses in this profession.

If anybody has the 2ndary for NYCOM, I have my interview on Wednesday, and will be taking the redeye back for my interview. I had a family emergency and found myself home before my interview. I thought I packed the 2ndary, but I cannot find it. Would anybody mind PM-ing me the questions?

I didn't know they interviewed on wed. is your date correct? In any case good luck!!

I am in a bit of a pickle. I applied to MSUCOM this year and was pretty confident that I would get in. However, It has been over 3 months since I have been complete and my application still has not been reviewed by the committee.

My stats are:

27 O MCAT
3.4 Science GPA
3.5 Overall GPA

I have come to realize that my stats aren't competitive. The reason I was pretty confident I would get into MSUCOM is becuase my brother got in with similar stats two years ago. Actually, he had a 26 MCAT which is lower than mine.

So anyway, right now, I am in panic mode and looking for some advice. I was wondering if I should apply to NYCOM right now. Do I have any shot at all to get in this late. If not NYCOM, is there any other school I should try that might be favorable for my stats.

Somebody please help. I am desperate. Thanx in advance.

I think it's worth a shot if you can get everything out ASAP. Plenty of people have gotten in late before.

Your stats are not as bad as you seem to think and I'm sure you would have some chance at acceptance. Have you shadowed a DO/do you have a DO letter? A good amount of ECs? Are you instate?

I say go for it if your answer is "yes" to all of those. Good luck! 🙂

I agree with Semicolon. NYCOM started their interview in November which is much much later than other DO schools. Applying now will still leave you a good chance of getting reviewed and getting an interview invite. If I was you, i would apply asap!

Odd that I haven't heard from them either way (interview 12/3). They're really taking their time.

does anyone have their interview this tuesday (27th). Any last minute advice i was fine before but am starting to get a bit nervous about my interview

Good luck dreamer!!

I just had mine last Thurs. The interviewers are really easy going, and are only trying to learn a little more about you. Very laid back - and mine didn't ask me anything too out of the blue. Just be prepared to explain why you are going down this path in life (a very reasonable thing to ask seeing that you are applying to medical school). Also the best advice I could give is be yourself, show them that you can be a good doctor, and are a confident individual. There is no need to be nervous (although everyone gets a little jitters before the interview), no one is going to grill you, just have fun with it... might as well make the best of the process if you are going to do it anyways!!:luck:

I will be canceling my interview for feb 3rd, anyone wanna take it?

Does anyone know if it is a good idea to call the admissions office to find out my status? I got interviewed on the 13th and still didn't hear anything. I'm worried but I'm not sure whether to call or just wait.

It wouldn't hurt. The people that were accepted between november and december had until january 30th to submit our deposit. So maybe they are going to wait and see how many people will choose to attend and figure out where to go from there? Obviously this is just my speculation but I definitely don't think it will hurt to call and see if any decisions have been made on your application. But one thing they are firm about is releasing the information on whether or not you got in unles there is truly a legitimate reason. But I would call just to find out if any decisions have been made in regards to those that were interviewed in the week of january 13th. a good friend of mine interviewed on the same week as well and is waiting to hear back from them. good luck to all of you guys

January 13th was only 2 weeks ago. I'd give it at least a month until you actually hear anything. But call if you think it will put your nerves at ease. Good luck!

NYCOM is known to be very slow and unpredictable when it comes to admissions. It'll get frustrating, but just be patient!

Hi folks,

I was complete in like October 08, and I've still heard ZIP from NYCOM. Anyone else in this boat? I called and they said "we're behind in processing applications," but FEBRUARY seems a bit absurd to me. I interviewed there last year and got waitlisted, and my application has only improved since then so I'd think I should probably get another interview this year. Maybe not?

Unfortunately, every year gets more and more competitive. With that said, don't start worrying yet. NYCOM started much later than the other schools and interviews up till April/May. There's still time! Good luck in this application cycle 🙂
