NYCOM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
getting in feels amazing and i'm sure all of you guys will get in, but trust me when i say getting in is not the hard part in this process (although most people agree it's the most stressful and feels like the hardest part at the time) 😀

be prepared to work hard and make huge personal sacrifices and be really sure this is what you want because it will be your life.

ps: be prepared to understand that you will never ACTUALLY understand the horror until you are here... 😀 sorry, i'm on a neuro high...

Has anyone NOT from NY had a request to interview yet? I submitted my application back in June. Since then, I've been accepted to a handful of other schools. NYCOM is my first choice, and it's killing me that it's the only school I haven't heard from! 😕

I submitted my application in July and have not heard back from them either. I already submitted a deposit somewhere else so im done at NYCOM, but it would have been nice to hear one way or another before now. Good luck!

I just wanted to say good luck to all of those who interviewed early in November and are expecting a letter from them today. :luck:

I hope we all get in! 😀

who is going 100% if accepted? should a group for NYCOM 2013 be made in the osteo forum? facebook? both?

I am 99.9% going ... yea make a facebook group!! and a 2013 group 🙂. If I hear from PCOM and get an interview soon then I would go to it, just to compare. But i am almost positive on NYCOM. how about you?

If I get accepted, I will DEFINITELY be going. I agree; make both groups!

Thanks for the feedback Tuckermans! 🙂 It's nice to know I'm not the only one in this boat... Congrats on being accepted to another school, and good luck next year!

yeh, im def going.. as you can see from my mdapps, i didnt even submit any other secandaries, with the exception of NOVA (b/c it didnt require an essay)

Nothing in the mail today and the lady in the admissions office told me that no decisions have been made on me yet. I guess thats NYCOM for waitlisted. Off to NOVA interview...

drwilson, do you have any courseworks that are required for admissions but currently in progress?

I wouldn't say you were waitlisted right off the bat. There could be tons of reasons why decision was not made on your application. Just hang in there and be patient buddy. good luck on your NOVA interview.
One class...physics 2, but they know about it, whatever. Thanks for wishing me luck I'm interviewing tomorrow, it would be nice to go to Nova too.

Congratulations to those have already recieved your acceptances! I hope i'll be joining you soon.

I received an invite for an interview early novemeber, but i didnt no schedule the interview until 10 days after i recieved the letter because i was out of state. The only available interview date was Jan 27th.

I am in-state local in long Island, do you think my chances of acceptance are now slim because of my late interview date?

Should i call and try to reschedule to an earlier date if available?

i would def try to see if you can get an earlier date (not that i don't think you'd have a shot with the later one) .. you never know, maybe people have cancelled and they have spots to fill. its worth a shot!

good luck.

I called today and they did not have any available times for an earlier interview date.

How much of a disadvantage will I be by interviewing in late january? Do you think class may be full at that point and I will be interviewing for waitlist?

You probably won't hear anything until after Jan 30th which is the deadline for those who were accepted prior to December 15th. Remember, NYCOM has 300 seats to fill and they will probably accept more than that number. So if your application is good ,together with your in-state stats, I think your chances are good.👍

Stversko,

Dont over think it. Last year my girlfriend (from LI) was interviewed late jan and she is currently a first year at NYCOM. Just because you were not interviewed early does not mean that you will only be interviewing for the waitlist. If you think you are a good candidate, then dont worry - you'll get in!

As for those who have not heard back yet, the waitlist is not the only possibility. If you go to last years thread you will see that there is a class that some individuals had to take through nycom in order to matriculate in that year. Not a bad option, and from what I hear it really does a good job at preping you for the coming year. Still there is time, and no need to stress out, and believe me - being on the waitlist is a hundred times more stressful than not knowing which list you will be on!

Just imagine having to wait until the day of classes to see if your accepted -- yeah so no one really can complain just yet!! Sit back and enjoy - cuz going ape isnt gonna help your sanity much save it for next year :luck:

does nycom send out rejection letters post interview??? or do they just leave you waiting...?

I still haven't received a rejection letter from last year. So I guess theoretically I am still on the waitlist lol

haha i wonder why they dont send out rejections, i hate waiting not knowing anything! i called admissions today and the woman told me my decision was sent out and to check my mail, so i was just getting nervous and wondering whether i could be getting a rejection letter 🙁 thanks for replying though!

Why not VT, Hookie? I thought you were hardcore VT? NYCOM was my #1 choice when i first applied because all the docs i know are from NYCOM, but after seeing the projected tuition-i withdrew.

Can someone compare nycom to either azcom, ccom, dmu, kcumb, pcom or vcom (those are the schools i visited)?

WOO!! I got that piece of mail today; I'M IN!!!

Looks like I'm part of this "club" now. It'll be great joining you all in the Class of 2013!

VCOM seems like a GREAT school. Any school that invests in its website and layout gets my vote.
On a more serious note, I'm sure the education and facilities at VCOM will be superb. I noticed a section devoted to listing current and past research projects of faculty members. Very solid research work is being done there.Secondly the tuition is good ...32k.I'm very much tempted to apply even though I'm gonna die of boredom in Blacksburg.

However, from reading their website, the school is very much geared into training DOs that want to practice primary care and rural medicine. In fact, close to 5 months of your clinical rotations are going to be in community/rural hospitals with less than 200 beds. Nonetheless, it seems, at least from VCOM's match list, that this isn't a big deal since a lot of the students there have matched into competitive specialties.

Thank you! Yep, I'll see you next year. 😀

And to drwilson: I'm sorry that you didn't get an acceptance as of yet. Don't give up; no one can tell what an Admissions Office is thinking.

Yea, it's not a great feeling.

By the way is anyone else still working on their requirements? Because I'm very surprised I didn't get in. I have the grades, EC's and my interview was fine. I'm trying to figure this out.

Strongly considering accepting the NYCOM offer. However, I realized that I may not have picked up the brochure that was handed out that day. Can you guys tell me what the tuition and fees are for the school and what other important information the brochure has? Was it an actual catalog? The admissions office refuses to mail one out.😕

:clap::clap: NYCOM 2013:clap::clap:

Futuredrandwife posted this last week.

For the class of 2012, this is the four year tuition projection WITHOUT living expenses/board (does include health insurance):

Yr one: $48,183
Yr two: $50,457
Yr three: $53,584
Yr four: $57,813

I used to think WVSOM was the absolute worst for tuition. I didn't even bother interviewing with them because theres no way I'd pay so much more when I have an acceptance elsewhere. I didn't even consider NYCOM one of the rediculously expensive ones until I saw that packet they gave out on interview day.

Wow those prices are ridiculous! But it must be for a good reason if NYCOM is producing doctors in competitive specialties!

amen to that.

p.s. you guys who havent started yet have NO IDEA how much free time you have.

p.s.s. it's hard but i would never give it up. it's the most challenging thing i have ever done, but i have grown and pushed myself in so many ways. the character building begins from day one. dont say we didn't warn you 🙂

Can anyone tell me what was in the packet they handed out during interview day that I somehow misplaced? Did you get a catalog?

it was the answers to every test for your year. just kidding, happy hannukah!

have any out of staters received interview/secondary invites yet?

Congratulations to those have already recieved your acceptances! I hope i'll be joining you soon.

Don't worry about this too much... When I interviewed at Nova yesterday, I was told that it was still early in the interview process, and they started interviewing in early September. NYCOM did not start interviewing until early November so January 27th is still definitely early enough to have a good shot at getting in, especially since you're in-state. They interview through April so you're in a good spot. 🙂

drwilson, did you interview at Nova yesterday?? I didn't meet you!!! There were so many people there lol.

PS: drwilson, perhaps since they took almost a month to start reviewing files, they did not get to yours yet. They may have only done a handful on the first day and maybe it wasn't in any particular order. Just a thought.

Has anyone heard anything who interviewed on the 18th? The latest I heard anyone who got an acceptance interviewed the 11th.

because i was supposed to have an interview in west virginia last weekend i called NYCOM and they were able to tell me last week. but i interviewed on the 11th and i just received my letter in the mail today. so, don't worry ... i'm sure you'll hear very soon. good luck!

Oh man, there is absolutely no way I'm going to be able to function here at work knowing that a letter could be waiting for me right now - I interviewed on the 11th also and I've been getting a little nervous...

I just wanna second that... 1st block of neuro is intense. But congrats to everyone who already got accepted 👍 And Good Luck to everyone waiting to hear!
