NYCOM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just received NYcom interview invitation letter. Finally..so happy!! Reduced a lot of pressure for Touro interview tomorrow. Still wish me good luck tomorrow in Touro.

danny i interviewed at touro too but had my heart set on nycom..😀
a word of warning... the admissions ppl try to psych you and make you nervous.. and the interviewers can ask some very pointed questions.
i think they do that to see how you perform under pressure..so dnt let them get the best of you and good luck !!!

when did you complete your application?
you don't have to submit your secondary before scheduling interview. You bring it with you on the day of interview. i scheduled it to afternoon session of march 3rd. 2 weeks later. Anyway, nycom will be my first choice.

good luck daniel! I'm sure you will do great. You look golden on paper so just show them your personality and try to actually enjoy the interview. They are pretty laid back and actually very conversational. They just want to get to know you since they already know you are very capable academically. good luck and keep us updated!
How did you know i look golden on paper? Is there anyway that you can see my past post?😛

I did not quite understand what closed-file interview is, so when they asked my grades i talked about them openly until the lady interviewer remind me it was closed-file interview. I even didnt notice about her reminder. However, since they asked thse question regarding grade first, i think it should be fine for me to disclose my status, right? Only being asked for 10 mins, the touro interviewers asked me if i have any questions for them. I got nervous because they only asked where i live and why i want to be in touro. I replied with a smile " i dont want to ask about anything from you, but i want to talk more about myself." Both of the interviewers laughed. I hope i didnt damage anything....

wow, thanks for remembering me. Hokie06 Can you comment on the interview i just described above? I felt nothing during interview, but now I am getting nervous by recalling all the mistakes i made. especially speaking poor english....

That's essentially how I felt after the interview. It didn't exactly go the way you stated, but afterwards I continuously kicked myself for various little things to the point that I actually convinced myself that I would get rejected, and even when an admissions office lady said "it's not bad news", I assumed it was a waitlist (it wasn't 😀).

My point is, don't worry yourself with how you did and what you could have possibly done wrong. You've already gone through with it and there's nothing you could do now but wait, hope, and try to understand that you did the best you could. Personally, I feel that you most likely did better than you think and that whatever small details you think are horrible probably weren't even noticed by the interviewer (or simply won't have an effect on their impression of you).

In the words of Oasis, "stop crying your heart out". Good luck! 👍

I'm sure you did great. It is really difficult to judge how you did without looking from the outside. But based on what you have said, I wouldn't worry too much about it. It is only natural to be concerned! The only thing you can do now is wait and just relax. Try to get your mind off it because dwelling on it will not expedite the decision or help you feel better! I personally think you did okay, I think your comment at the end of your interview was funny and I'm sure it had a positive impact. Good luck

seems very random this year. I don't know if it was random last year as well but this year they meet whenever everyone from the committee can get together. I heard a month after my interview. From my understanding it was the very first meeting they had.

danny you are too funny! but i have to agree that you can't stress abt what you did/didnt do right.. cuz you really have no idea what is going through these ppl's minds u kno?
good luck!

hmm..just to clarify i found it funny bc of the way you responded to the grades thing.. sometimes i wonder where they pull these questions from..
i was asked if i knew touro was a d.o. school.. (umm.. duh? that's what i wanna be and thats why i applied) lol oh well best of luck

lol, i will just stop thinking about how suck i did in the touro interview because i have the nycom one coming on march 3rd. NYCOM is my place. Guys, thanks for ur attention. By the way, "Semicolon" is a really a creative screen name, especially with that half-colon graph attached.
Hokie, you already got into nycom, right?

yep, NYCOM was my first choice as well. Really excited to start this August. Good luck your next interview, hopefully it will be more relaxing and comfortable than your last one.

I think it's [email protected], but I'm not sure. I don't think it's on the website.

Does anyone know how much (if at all) the waitlist moves for NYCOM? Hopefully it starts moving before I have to drop some serious deposit money at other schools...

no clue~ but maybe you should give them a call and ask them to give you more information about it (whether if its ranked, when you can expect to hear back, etc).

or

you might find your answer by doing a search on this forum for NYCOM wait list. good luck!

For my year (2011) the waitlist moved a ton. For 2012, it barely moved. All depends on the year, I guess.

I would imagine that the waitlist would move quite late in the cycle, so expect to make deposits beforehand (assuming you want to).

Is anyone looking into scholarships on the internet. Any luck?

Ahhhh the waitlist, I can tell you all you need to know about that. Feel free to PM if you want to know what last years experience was like.

Also they do not give you any additional information regarding that list except for what is on the piece of mail you received. Goodluck!

thanks semicolon for the email address. I finally received an interview for march10! Does anyone know how full the class is at this point and how much longer they will be interviewing? I heard that nycom interviews 'late' but I hope i'm not that late bc i dont want to be interviewing for the waitlist..

Congrats on the interview! I don't think NYCOM interviews people specifically for waitlists because one of the student that interviewed with me on the second week they started interviewing people got waitlisted. I'm sure the class is far from full. I wouldn't worry too much about that right now! You can always try calling and asking yourself too. good luck!

me too! please keep me updated on your search as well! nycom has a few scholarships available-contact financial aid
also.. if you are considering going into primary care, pediatrics, obgyn and would consider working in an underserved area, there is tuition forgiveness. for each year worked, some of your debt is forgiven. Unlike the military, there is only a two commitment and a number of areas to apply. Unfortunately, 2 years would not cover the cost of medical school, but you can continue with this program to pay off your debt.
there is also a scholarship with this same organiztion that will pay for your tuition plus give you a stipend while in medical school. the scholarship for this year is not up yet. in this instance, you will be sent to the area of most need and i think the commitment is 4 years...
if you want me to send you the site lemme kno.. also please let me know if you find anything else out there! goodluck~marykate

Interviewed today...was the last one to go so there was a lot of waiting and time to talk with my fellow interviewees who seemed like a fun bunch. Interview was very pleasant and laid back but I think I came across as being very opinionated and a little judgmental.

...but I hit god awful traffic on the way back. 🙁

I was completed at the end of December with my AACOMAS application. I was wondering if anyone could tell me whether or not the class is full and IF I get a secondary/interview invite, I'll be interviewing for a waitlist spot. How long did it take for you guys to hear back from NYCOM about a secondary/interview/rejection? Thanks to anyone who gives their two cents about this. And for others who may be reading this and is in the same situation, good luck to you all... I know it's been tough but what else can we do but wait?

If you go through the posts, you'll realize that you are never really interviewing for a wait list spot, because the class is always changing and alot of people will get in and pull out in the next few months. Alot of people have not heard back.. it seems that they have a weird order to the way they process apps. Your secondary will be sent to you when you get the interview invite and you'll fill it out and take it with you to the interview. I don't think the class is close to full and they interview till April so don't worry.
It's always worth it to go to an interview... unless you've already been accepted to one of your top choices.. then it might not be worth it. NYCOM seems to be very very slow in this process and they don't seem to be good about getting us updated. A friend of mine who did interview there was told by the admissions director NOT to contact her in any way and to just wait.

I just dropped my DPC application off earlier this week and spoke to one of the admissions people. When I asked about how many apps they got in (for DPC), her response made clear that they are still interviewing and accepting students for general matriculation, not just DPC, and that the overall class wasn't near full. I can't give an exact number, but hopefully this helps a little. gl

My aacomas was completed in september-ish... didnt my secondary until early november...

also, does anyone know when financial aid needs to be filled out? and if i file financial aid, and hypothetically, i get into another school, what would i need to do in that scenario. lol

Hey, just heard back from Touro, accepted, and i am going to have interview in NYCOM in coming tuesday. Now i am so excited. I have secured a spot already. Will be much more relaxed in nycom interview.

hey everyone,

NYCOM sent me the email confirming receipt of my primary on january 8. (late, i know 🙁)

how long did it take all of you to get an interview invite after you sent in your AACOMAS primary?

are they still giving out interview invites at this point?

after submitting primary, do they give you any other updates? or just the snail mail interview invite?

i know its late in the season now but any info would be greatly appreciated.. thanks! and good luck to everyone!!

Yes, they will definitely still be giving out interview invites; don't worry about that much. If they choose to do so with you, they'll send you a secondary, which you bring with you to the interview. NYCOM is very unpredictable with its admissions process, so there's no way to give you any indication of when you may receive a secondary/invite; it can be in a couple weeks, or it can be in April. Just sit tight and wish for the best.

Good luck!

Blow them away and they will make a space for you! BTW what was your undergrad?

when i arrived for the interview, the secretary told me that i didnt have a DO letter but that its not necessary. i got too lazy to ask for one, but still got in so i dont think its that important for a DO letter.

Your overall and science GPA is much higher than the average for the matriculating class last year (3.5 & 3.5 respectively) so I think it will definitely make up for your MCAT Score (average 27 last year). I think you have a good shot as long as your interview go well. I heard that NYCOM only interviews candidates they are serious about so getting to this stage is a great sign. Just charm them and im sure you have an excellent chance. Hope you can join us this August. Good luck~👍

Dynamitedan, are you from Rockland County? There is a St. Thomas Aquinas in Orangeburg. I am from New City.

Hey! So I have an interview at NYCOM on Tuesday coming up. I'm originally from NY (the Westchester area) so it'll kind of be like going home even if I've been in AZ the past 8 years (GO ASU Sun Devils!).

Any interview advice for this school? I'm about to read this entire thread and am on page one. I figured I'd post this now and introduce myself and maybe by the time I'm done reading the 850 posts in this thread I'll have some replies and new friends.

My stats:
31R (10V 10 B 11PS)
GPA 3-4-3.5 or something AACOMAS. AMCAS was 3.35
Re-applicant this year having only applied MD this year.
Accepted into Ross for JAN 09 deferred it until May so I could re-apply to my state school. Doesn't look too good for my state school so I'd rather go DO than go to Ross. I only filed secondaries for three DO schools, Midwestern Arizona, Midwestern Chicago, and NYCOM. I just interviewed at Midwestern Arizona last week and might get a response tommorow! I just happen to like NYCOM's clinical curriculum more (more surgery and more teaching hospitals in the area) and am interested in their joint DO/MBA program.
ECs:
5 month full time (40+ hours/week unpaid) with an MD in pulmonary and critical care. Did primary care in his office and spent a good amount of time in the ICU.
Volunteered as an assistant teacher at a childrens hospital.
Helped a ton of people with their diets and exercise programs over the year.
NY-State EMT-B certified with some community hours.
Volunteered in Emergency Room for a semester.
Some HIV fund-raising.
Worked as a golf caddy to put myself through college.

So I'm hoping to throw some questions out there:

What is living in Westbury like? I know about the weather all too well having grown up in New Rochelle (Westchester County).
How are the clinicals for NYCOM? Other than the 4th year required preceptorship are they ward-based or preceptor based?
Are any underserved rotations required?
And is it more difficult to place into programs out west (I want to practice in Arizona) coming from NYCOM or easier?

That's what I have for now...I'm sure I'll have a million more for you guys when I finish this thread! Thank you in advance.
