NYCOM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
should we be hearing anything from NYCOM? I have heard nothing from them since they sent the acceptance deposit confirmation.

I just had my interview yesterday and I'm so excited!!! Congrats Dannyboy!! I hope I get to send them a deposit someday soon!!!!!!! :xf:

I mailed in my DPC application like 2 months ago. 😀

While the stats for DPC are impressive, I'm still very uncertain about how well it will fit my learning style. I'm planning to just give it a try and if it doesn't seem like it'll work out, off to lecture I go!

And no, I haven't heard of anything from NYCOM; I assume they haven't even started looking at the applications yet.

Dr. Elkowitz said yesterday that he doesn't review the essays until June when school is over. I would like to apply to DPC also. I'm a very hands-on learner, so I think it would be good. Either way, I'd be so happy just to be a NYCOM student!! :xf:

UMDNJ is better hands down

That is a strong statement that I don't know if I agree with. If you are saying UMDNJ better prepares students to become quality physicians some sort of data would be nice to back up your statement.
The only major difference I see between the two is the price and the geography. I know you can get in state tuition for UMDNJ. Also, I believe most of UMDNJ's clinical sites are more towards Philly (this may not be 100% accurate, but I think it is true). I think it comes down to geography, and where an individual would like to be. I know in the NY area, NYCOM's name holds alot of weight and many physicians, both allopathic and osteopathic, have expressed that to me.

So, acesandfaults, I think it is a personal decision, and I wouldn't be able to make that choice for you. I chose NYCOM and turned down a UMDNJ interview because of its LI location (I can live with parents and save 15K a yr), and its reputation in the NY area because that is where I plan to live and practice.

Good luck with your choice...

Interviewed 2/17.
Accepted 3/10.
I live 20-30 mins away.
Planning to pay deposit sometime next week.
Considering what laptop to buy...Sony/Apple.
Stafford/SallieMae?
Preparing to be in debt for the rest of my life.
^yay. lol.

take care all.

what do you guys think... UMDNJ or NYCOM? i'm torn

Last year, I was on UMDNJ's waitlist and I got into NYCOM. If UMDNJ accepted me, I would have gone there in a heartbeat. Why? THE COST. NYCOM is sooo friggen expensie. I say take your UMDNJ acceptance and run with it. Both school are comprablie in terms of residency chances and academics IMO.

i gotta admit this one is a toughie. I would personally choose based on where I want to do my residency and practice in the future. If your answer is NY, screw the cost and go! If you have no desire to be in NY, however, save yourself the money and go to UMDNJ!

I don't understand this whole if you want to be in NY, then go to NYCOM thing. There are plenty of people from UMDNJ-SOM that do their residencies in nyc. There are also plenty of people from NYCOM that get residencies outside of ny. Both school are clsoe enough that most residency programs know the reupuation of UMDNJ and NYCOM. As long as they are able to set up electives in ny in the end of their 3rd and 4th year in ny, someone from UMDNJ will have as good a shot as someone from NYCOM. Also lets not forget that you can do a north Jersey track from UMDNJ, which will make you basically closer to the city than most LI hopstials from NYCOM.

Does anyone know if NYCOM is still sending out invitations to interview? I got accepted into two other schools but i'm still crossing my fingers from either PCOM or NYCOM and i haven't heard from either schools. At what point is it too late to even stop hoping? i wish they would say something

so i was at nycom this week to take care of a couple things and figured i'd try to find out where the gym was..
i found three treadmills in a very small weight room... this might be it but im just wondering if i missed another room .. (anyone?) does anyone know if we have access to cw post gym..?

I would call NYCOM and ask about your status. I hadn't heard anything and called, and they said they had sent me a letter, but I never received it. So they went ahead and scheduled me for an interview. Also, PCOM has a lot of organizational issues. And you sort of have to hold their hand and have them put your application materials together for you while you're on the phone. I don't know why they even hire people to work in their office because its so disorganized.

Good luck!

That's the gym. It's fairly small, but functional. There are a bunch of places in glen cove that offer discounts to NYCOM students. Many of my classmates go to planet fitness. I think it's about $10 a month there.

I believe we have access to the pool at CW post or suny old westbury (one of those two), but I am not sure about the gym.

I don't know if you were replying to my post specifically, but MY reason for choosing NYCOM over UMDNJ is even with the lower tuition, I would have to pay for living...I can move back in with my parents on LI and save 15K a year, in which case going to NYCOM is cheaper.....

So making generalizations about going to UMDNJ in a heartbeat over NYCOM over cost may not be the same for every individual...

I am on the waitlist for Touro NY and was accepted to NYCOM. To Touro NY I can drive from home and save the costs of a rental apartment. For NYCOM, I would need to rent an apartment. If I get off the waitlist for Touro NY, should I take it over NYCOM due to the savings? Is the program at NYCOM worth the added expense?

While it probably would save you a hefty sum, I don't think you can compare Touro's program to NYCOM's. It's a new school that didn't graduate a class yet so it's still working its kinks out and the quality of its 3rd and 4th year clerkships is still a big question. NYCOM, on the other hand, is a well-established school that has proven itself. While I'm sure that both institutions would give you a great medical education, I believe that NYCOM would open more doors for you. It's up to you and your priorities. 👍

Hey guys
Im enrolled in the 3/4 Osteopathic Program at SUNY Geneseo co-oped with NYCOM. Geneseo's requirements for teh program were to become a bio major, maintain a 3.5 GPA, complete Gen-eds, and score a 25. Its my 3rd year and I submitted my app which AACOMAS released on Jan 8. After 2 months of waiting around i decided to call them to get a status update. NYCOM's admission office said they didnt contact me because I didnt meet the program requirements. Apparantly they require a 26 on the MCAT which i scored a 25 (and i had time to retake it but i had met the requirements given to me so i didnt bother). I told them i had in writing the requirements given to me by Geneseo and faxed over which they are investigating and made the dean and program coordinator at geneseo aware and responsive to the problem. the only thing i can do is wait. :scared:Now heres the question. Has/is anyone gotten accepted through one of these programs? Is it pretty much automatic or is it selective. im under the impression is pretty much automatic as long as u fulfill the reqs. i just dont wanna fight hard for an interview and have them already have a rejection decision made up for me before i even interview because i dont meet their 3/4 program reqs. any insight is appreciated

for those who applied for dpc did you get a separate application in the mail after getting accepted or did you have to find it online? also have you guys gotten any more information about this fall after getting you acceptance package?

I called NYCOM admissions today- I haven't heard of them since submitting primary...the office said they are conducting interviews through April, but if I don't hear anything from them in the next few weeks- I should assume I am not invited for an interview...just wanted to pass along the info

I think it came after you submitted your deposit with the immunization form...and no I haven't gotten anything else besides that...

The DPC application came with the acceptance letter. After the deposit was submitted, they sent out requests for medical immunization forms. Nothing after that so far.

Did anyone from 2/24 interview hear anything so far? It's been 4 weeks. Do you guys think I should call and ask? Do they tell you anything over the phone?

somone please please clear this up! i googled the topic on my lunch break to no avail. im at work at the moment and freaking out... i was talking to a nurse interested in what a D.O. was. After explaining that we were not MD cop-outs and only have to take the COMLEX not USMLE, she then told me that New York state does not recognize OMM... This is the first I have ever heard that and had no response..
what?!
this sounds off.. and if so.. why am going through the D.O. program.. grr
any response would be greatly appreciated!

Usually they will not tell you anything over the phone, but if you're persistent and helpless, some of them may be willing to give you a hint. I would expect your decision to come within the next few days, though. Good luck. :luck:

Please don't listen to what that nurse says. She obviously has no idea what she's talking about. Don't worry; OMM is recognized and practiced just fine in NY. 👍

anyone heard anything back about the DPC program after submitting the application?

They won't even be looking at the applications for quite a while. Sit tight.

Agreed with semicolon, that nurse does not know what she is talking about, and probably doesn't know what OMM is. Don't listen to her!

On another note, I too am waiting to hear back after the 2/24 interview (well 2/26 interview, but its the same group). Anyone hear anything back at all? It'll be four weeks exactly tomorrow... geez I know I'm not the only one counting the days but that sounds crazy for me to even say!!

Semicolon-Ive heard mixed reviews on this subject, but do you know if we'd hear back either way around four weeks or is that only the time frame for a yes? Any insight?

to people waiting on a decision:

i interviewed on 3/5, and i called today. the lady told me that a decision has been made on my application and that letters will be mailed within the next few days. she wouldn't tell me the decision over the phone 🙁

i'm guessing that means decisions have been made on applications up to and including those who interviewed on 3/5, at the least.

good luck everyone!

There is no "time frame" for an acceptance; they can come within a few days of each other. However, it seems that people who have gotten letters considerably later have been waitlisted. I know the wait sucks. Good luck!

Hi All! I interviewed on March 19. They said to wait 4-5 weeks and that things were getting a little backed up now. Good luck, everyone!

Hey guys, i was wondering if any one here has a good concrete plan for the comlex and/or the usmle? Are there any preparatory classes being offered in or around NYCOM?

by the way, good luck to all who are waiting to hear back yet...😀

Also, what was the median mcat score of NYCOM for last year? (just inquiring for a friend)

I also interviewed on 3/5......getting REALLY anxious now!!

I just called NYCOM to ask about my application (interviewed 2/25) and she told me that no decision has been made so far. I'm wondering if this is a bad sign considering people who were interviewed 3/5 have had decisions 😕😕

haha I think it's a bit premature to start thinking about USMLE/COMLEX. But I did hear fantastic things about First Aid USMLE for board prep.

The MEAN MCAT score from last year was a 27 according to the admissions office.
Good luck to everyone that is waiting to hear back! Hope all of you guys can join us come august. :xf:

edit: oops sorry I meant the MEAN not the midian. I swear I took a year worth of statistics!

Mean MCAT - 27 for class of 2012...no idea about median...

HotPink48 how did the interview go? A good friend of mine heard back from NYCOM almost 2 months after his interview and found out he was waitlisted.

I have yet to hear anyone actually receving a rejection letten from NYCOM. So if they sent you a letter, it can't be terrible news. After reading through previous threads, seems like the consensus is that if you don't hear back after the interview (3+ Months), there is a possibility of something else. They do send out letters for waitlists and acceptances though. Just my .02 cents.

good luck, i heard if you get interviewed at NYCOM, there is a high likelihood of getting accepted assuming your interviewer scored you well on the interview.

I just called NYCOM to ask about my status (interviewed 3/5) and she told me no decision had been made yet either. I think it might depend on who answers the phone what sort of response you get, or if the person is willing to even look you up in the system and tell you if a decision has been made. Either way, based on other people's feedback, my prediction is that 2/25-2/26 interviewees will hear back next week, and 3/5 interviewees will hear back the week after that.

I thought my interview went well, however it was hard to tell at first. He even invited me to shadow with him if I go to NYCOM. Although, what threw me off is that he kept telling me I'll end up being accepted to UMDNJ. Thought that was kind of strange because we spent like 5 minutes talking about that, even though I told him I would love to go to NYCOM over and over.

Please, please relax. As a first year going onto second year at NYCOM, I can tell you this much: the best way to prepare for the boards is to do well in your classes. Seriously. If you study every night, read Robbins (the pathology book) and Harrison's, you will do just fine on the boards. You should NOT be worrying about board prep classes right now as THE BEST BOARD PREP CLASSES ARE YOUR ACTUAL CLASSES IN YOUR FIRST AND SECOND YEAR.

she then told me that New York state does not recognize OMM... This is the first I have ever heard that and had no response..

Very far off from the truth. Don't listen to her. NYCOM has an OMM residency at St. Barnabas Medical Center in the bronx. It's only one of the few in the country. NYCOM also has a clinic on campus with our Profs that can do OMM and are licened to preform OMM.

Wow, im really surpised at the level of ignorance at some of the healthcare providers. If New York State didn't recognize omm, then how would NYCOM be able to teach us OMM every week in lab?

As I recall, Orientation was just a one day thing. It was the day before the first day of classes. Orientation and the first week of classes were pretty much pointless. On our first day, we had classes such as the history of OMM and what is expected of you in anatomy lab 😴

are we expected to know the history of OMM in the COMLEX? Do you get quized on the history?

are we expected to know the history of OMM in the COMLEX? Do you get quized on the history?

lol, not everything they teach us is Board relevant material. Remember, you are not here to learn for the boards. You are here to be the best possible physician you can be. Understanding your profession, your roots and some of the famous players makes you more informed and possibly better to explain what a DO is to your patients and your MD counterparts. With that, yea, there were like 2 questions in the first test on the history of OMM.

AlSO for all those new incoming students don't worry about classes, studying, or getting a head start. Enjoy the rest of your time off. You'll be studying enough when you get here. Just relax and enjoy all your free time before you all start!

So........ I found out on Thursday that

I GOT IN!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, besides that awesome news that I was just so anxiously awaiting, I was hoping to clear up some things regarding the admissions people.
I interviewed 2/26, and was told to wait a month before I called to ask anything. I waited (exactly) one month and on Thursday I called the office. The lady who answered the phone transfered me to someone (nicer) and I was asked to confirm my info for her (obviously she was actually looking me up in their system). After about a 2 minute wait of complete silence on the phone, admissions lady told me "OK Jessica your acceptance letter is being mailed today":soexcited:
I obviously just about fell off my chair after that tid bit of information.
I was was just blown away, because judging by what people on this board say, you cannot get a decision over the phone. Well I did, and I wasn't pushy or desperate, I was just nice and polite. She just right out told me!
So I am sure that makes some people more nervous, or maybe give some people more hope, but I just wanted to tell my story. Apparently the admissions office is just not to be trusted because they literally tell everyone something different!!
But I haven't gotten my letter yet and am expecting it some time early this week if she did mail in on Thursday. If you interviewed 2/24-2/26 hopefully you will also get your letter early this week!!!

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!!! And I'm SO exited to meet people in my new class!!!😀😀😀
