NYCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Aptiva1988 - I remember u...I interviewed in am... I was the blond girl from Philly. I still haven't heard anything 🙁 I'm definitely going if accepted though....

Hey Calabash, wazzzaaabb. hahaha. nice I thought you might have been it. how did your research professor treat you the next day when you returned to work. Hope she didn't give you much fuss. but yea haven't heard anything yet, but yea my first choice as well. will keep you updated if anything comes up. cheers.

@NYCOM students: Can you please tell me about your experience at NYCOM so far, what do you like or dislike about the school? How are the rotations?

Are there special interviews for HCOP students. I called today, and I am a bit confused. The admissions personnel stated that my file was complete and apparently a decision has been made. Then she said that I will be notified if the committee wants to interview me. I had forgotten about sending the tax info and faxed it immediately today. What does all this mean? 😕

Just received the Med-Prep letter today and I'll be returning it tomorrow. Who is doing the Med-Prep route? 😀

Does the letter mean it's a 100% acceptance to the Med-Prep program because the way the letter is worded sounds as if I was given the opportunity to apply and what equates "successful completion"?

I'll be attending Med-Prep. Received the letter not too long ago myself. Hope to see each and every one of you guys/gals there.

As far as I know the ones who are interested in attending the Med-Prep program are:

Myself
Blueskies
Bowlin
Frankenpad

Step up if you're a Med-Prep'er! Don't be shy. We'll start a 'Minority Clan'. I kid, I kid. Hehe 👍

fellow med prep'er here! has anyone actually gotten an official "you've been accepted to med prep" letter/info after sending back that 1 page application?

Interviewed on Feb 4 in the morning. Received a letter from NYCOM today. I was selected to take part in the Med-Prep program. I will be attending.

Hey guys! I will be attending NYCOM in the fall as a first year student. Does anybody know of some good living situations? The school is close to home for me, but i might want to live with other students. Feel free to reply, thanks!

Hey I also submitted all of my HCOP stuff and had my interview on the 4th of Feb but today got a letter from NYCOM stating that I am on their wait list. Am I on wait list for NYCOM or NYCOM HCOP/medprep. Let know if anyone else is also in the same boat. NYCOM asked me to submit my wait list papers. Thanks.

@aptiva, why don't you post your waitlist letter so that we can help you decoded what they're saying!

I also would like to know. I submited my 1 page application about 2 weeks ago and haven't heard anything.

I think you are on the waitlist for both. There were a several people on the waitlist last year and were told that they, generally speaking, were on the waitlist for direct accpetance, but some waitlisters will be offered a chance to attend MED-PREP instead.

hey, to those of you who live in new york, is floral park an ok place to stay overnight if i have an interview the next morning? please help! all I need is a yes or no thanks!

Yes...NYCOM is 20min drive from floral park..but it depends on traffic..Good Luck.

@aptiva, why don't you post your waitlist letter so that we can help you decoded what they're saying!

Thanks Robo058. I called NYCOM today and the kind secretary took a look at my file and said that I was on wait list for HCOP/medprep. bummer. I'll keep waiting. Cheers.

aptiva1988 - thats good though.. atleast you are waitlisted... think of the positive (its better than rejected) Im sure you will get in...

still no letter...I'm worried... no one from 2/4 has posted anything about rejection letters... maybe they all go out together i.e. to my house 😱

Hey everyone, I know most of you are all discussing your acceptances and housing already, but I have a question I was hoping to get some advice on. I'm actually a first year in pharmacy school right now, but I've definitely feel by far that I would rather be a physician. Basically, I applied to NYCOM in January and they got my verified application and all documents the first day of February. I'm a very very strong applicant as far as GPA, MCAT, research experience, and extracurriculars (hopefully being in a health professional program helps, too), but I'm worried that I'm too late in the cycle. Does anyone have any clue if I have a shot based on anything you might know about NYCOM or the admissions committee? I just really dont have the money to spend on another year of pharmacy school while I apply again next year, so I'm crossing my fingers here and rolling the dice.

I haven't seen anyone post about rejection letters period. That's pretty amazing given the number of acceptances to posts ratio in this topic.

Has anyone heard back that interviewed the week of 02-08?

So that confirms my suspicion that receiving the 1 page Med-Prep application form does not mean that one is 100% accepted into the program. What a bummer! Here I thought I could go about and rest easy until May 25th, but now I have another worry that I might get rejected or waitlisted after I submit the 1 page form. Ack. :scared:

i feel your pain. i applied like barely a week befroe you did. i think i'm a pretty decent applicant too and i even sent in an update letter/letter of interest but i haven't heard a thing yet.

Are you that dumb, FP? Go back and reread the quoted author original quote. Just like with regular admissions, not every accepted students will matriculate and so is the case with Med Prep. Not everyone they accept into the Med Prep will attend the program. Yes, most will accept initially then decline as they learn of other opportunities down the road. Thus, the adcom also has a waiting list in case any of the invited Med Prepers change their mind later...This is simple English and yet you are having a hard time to comprehend!

Sorry FrankenPad, there might be a misunderstanding here. I got a paper for HCOP a while back that asked me to submit my parents tax info with in two weeks, someone else also posted the same letter on an earlier post. I then had my interview at NYCOM and finally now three weeks later I am on the wait list. I never received a one page form to fill out, so you might be at a different position. I hope this helps.

Robu: Whoa. No need for name calling. Am I dumb? I hope not, but English is not my first language and took me 6 years to get from not speaking / "comprehending" one word to where I am today. So please take it easy. All I did was to state what I felt. So let's be :meanie:😀😛😉🙂 and not :meanie::scared:😡🙁, okay? 🙂

Thanks Aptiva. I hope everything turns out for the best! Keep us posted! :luck:

Don't worry FrankenPad, I misunderstood what he said as well. I also thought he received his HCOP materials after his interview and he interviewed for direct acceptance rather than MED-PREP.

whens everyone planning to file their fafsa? do we file it first then receive a financial aid packet or do they just send you it automatically?

I would think that you'd have to fill out the FAFSA first and have it get processed before receiving a FA award package from NYCOM. Its something I still have to get around to doing. Got Turbo Tax sitting in front of me, and all of my Dad's tax papers...hmmm 😱

When does the adcom meet at this school? It seems like most people get acceptances on Fridays, Saturdays (and sometimes Mondays).

Just looked up NYCOM's tuition cost and it's $42,090 for those who do not already know this. Anyhow, I just want to express my contingent joy if Robu's speculation on a possible scholarship of $10,000 or more for Med-Prep students should indeed hold true.

Take care everyone and best wishes to those who haven't heard back yet be they via Direct route or Med-Prep route! :luck::xf:👍

[*RANTING MODE: OFF*]

Pretty sure I'm going to have to join the military should I attend this school. I'm not coming out of med school with $500,000 worth of debt (after tuition, expenses, loan fees, and interest accrues).

I just got the letter saying that I can now apply to the Med Prep Program... And I sent the 1 pager app back in today =)

So I read thru some posts (may have missed it) has anyone gotten an actual official letter saying welcome to med prep? how long did it take that letter to come?

I'M EXCITED!!! =)

Dude, you should apply for the The National Health Service Corps Scholarship, which I will be doing before starting med school. Quite competitive, but they pay everything plus stipend. No need to deploy oversee, just b ready to work in underserved communities, i.e., Harlem, East Flatbush, or any other underserved places in the US. The DEADLINE FOR THIS CYLCLE IS SOMETIMES IN MARCH!!! I heard they favor DO a little tiny bit because these physicians usually specialize in primary care. SDN is devoting a section on its forum for this scholarship. You should check it out!

EDIT: 🙁 The deadline has already passed!!! Oh well, there is always next year!

EDIT2: No f/u/c/king way...i investigated a little more...here is what it says "The National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program is accepting applications until April 6." 🙂

EDIT3: Wait a minute...I am confused! This faq was last year...hmm gotta call them...if anyone finds out before I do, can you please share?

here's an addendum to robu's post regarding aid.

If you're a New York State / City resident you can also apply to the "Doctors Across New York". What it basically is, is a program much like what Robu posted, but only within the New York state (after you graduate). Ya dig? 🙂

Here's the link:

Robu: Seems like the NHSC deadline is 09/3/2010 or until funds are expended (does that look right?)

@calabash: Congrats! You're one step closer to going to NYCOM. I really hope that 1-page is it. It's too bad the AdCom have no idea how badly we want a seat in NYCOM. 😛

Interesting. Hopefully I get in tomorrow or the next day. I have no clue if it's going to happen though. Military is at least a good option should I not get anything else substantial. I also wouldn't have to worry about my first month at NYCOM because of their stipend.

Keep in mind the NHSC is for primary care specialties ONLY. Also, poke around on the military websites and look for residency repayment options. You don't have to join until you're in whichever residency you match into, and they help pay back your student loans in exchange for X years of service. It's good for those who aren't really sure about a military career and don't want to be locked into it from day 1.

Thanks USB for the link regarding the NYS version of NHSC. I wasn't aware of it. Beware the other link provided is the Loan Repayment program, which is far different from the fellowship itself. I am sure they have different deadline. I am almost positive that the deadline for the fellowship is sometimes in March; I remember hearing or reading it somewhere from a good source but can't recall from who, and last year faq seems to substantiate this claim (deadline was April 2009). Anyhow, this is the timeline on how i remembered it (need to be confirmed):

1. March or April: Deadline
2. June - July: Interview to those lucky few
3. September - Oct: Award Notification
4. October: Award disbursement

I think one needs to send in admission letter or something along with the application. The question is: those who are doing Med Prep and are interested in applying to this program, how would this status affect them?

Darn these storms!!! None of us from the week of 02-08 are going to hear back!! Argh

Hey everyone, So I'm filling out my tap application. Do you guys know if we claim financial independence from our parents on this application as well?

So i sent in my secondary and everything was complete in early january. I have tons and tons or EC, research, great LORs, from professors & a DO and a 25 mcat, and 3.74 gpa. I still havent heard a yes or no from nycom & am getting super stressed about this. I called admissions and they said as long as my secondary was in they would email me a letter. Is anyone else having similar problems??

Hi everyone. In case anyone want an earlier interview date... I just withdrew my interview for 3/4/2010. Good Luck!

I got the letter giving me the opportunity to apply to med prep, I submitted that one page application, and now I am waiting. About how long does it take to hear whether you are officially accepted into MedPrep? Do they send you a letter in the mail? Will they eventually send you more information about the program? (classes etc) I am more concerned with living arrangements up there... though I think someone a few posts back said something about living in the NYIT dorms...

Anyone interview 2/9 got anything? Do guys know when should we expect an answer?

:-(

Nothing for me either. It's been so long!!! The 2/4 people almost all heard back over a week ago now so you'd think we'd be next. No idea when we'll be hearing back.

Classes were canceled on Friday and I'd heard earlier in the topic that that's when the adcom meets. It's possible that we're all going to have to wait until next week 😱

Hi Calabash, I am also waiting. I called the office of admissions on Feb 24 after I mailed out my medprep application. I was told that a packet of information about the program will be mailed to me soon.
