NYCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My interview is tomorrow afternoon, March 3rd. I'm super nervous! I love this school and it's been my top choice for awhile, so this interview is a big deal! Anyone else interviewing tomorrow?

You should relax.

Our tour guides told us you'd literally have to pull a knife on your interviewer to get rejected.

Thanks cable... Hopefully I will get that packet soon as well! And hoepfully I will see you this summer at med prep! =)

Hi Calabash, I am also waiting. I called the office of admissions on Feb 24 after I mailed out my medprep application. I was told that a packet of information about the program will be mailed to me soon.

got my first interview invite of the cycle!! THANK YOU NYCOM 😍

had my interview and i am definitely my own worst enemy right now! keep thinking back on the interview and playing it back in my head, thinking of things i could've/should've said. Definitely had a view moments where my mind went blank and I feel that I looked stupid. Ugh! This is like some sort of psychological warfare!

Nobody walks out of interview thinking they did the best they could. There will always be that one question you think you could've answered better and play it over and over it in your head. As long as you feel you left a positive impression it should be fine!! Good luk!

Yeah, pretty much everyone goes through this.

Hello everyone.

I had an interview with the school in Feb and am on travel for the past week. What does the acceptance letter (package) look like so I could call home and inquire about it?

Thank you.
🙂

I don't think they've sent out acceptances for two weeks now because classes were canceled last Friday (and possibly Thursday) which apparently is when the adcom meets.

But I am also interesting in what the acceptance packet looks like.

Large white envelope (around 9x12).

how long did u have to wait to hear back? seems like it varies from 1.5-2 weeks to 2 months even based on what SDNers reported. what's up with that? i interviewed only last week and am anxiously waiting to hear back.

So does anyone know what the deal is with this HCOP email and constant phone calls I am getting from NYCOM?? I just interviewd last week and I'm confused about what this pertains to.

Around 2 weeks I think.

I'd like to reiterate that no one from my week has heard back and it's hitting 3.5 weeks now. I think they're delayed a week because of the snow. Or the people who got letters haven't posted...

i did not get a letter either...i interviewed on 2/9..

I'm still waiting from 2/9 too. Ive been on SDN everyday waiting to see if anyone has heard back 🙁

Hey AC121285,

Congrats on your acceptance letter. 👍

just curious, which college did you recv your bachelor degree? i have similar stats as yours (crappy mcat verbal, 180+ undergrad credits ast post-bac student, etc.). I had an interview at NYCOM in late Feb. i'm waiting to hear their response.

so are you going to attend NYCOM this august?
🙂

Hey, I remember you! the yoo guy right? Congrats, I still haven't hear anything...really scared!!

Hey for those studying at NYCOM do you have any international students (e.g Canadians) in your classes or is every student a US citizen/permanent resident?

Thanks

I called NYCOM yesterday just to make sure they received that med prep 1-page app. I was planning to ask then what comes next (if I should be expecting an acceptance to this, more information, etc) However they sounded so busy she was just "Yep everything is here, thank you, buh bye" I didn't want to be too pushy since she sounded so busy... Hopefully something more official will come in the mail soon to relieve this limbo of stress 😀

Does anyone know when NYCOM officially stops interviewing? I'm asking because I sent out my mcat scores late and I'm hoping it doesn't affect my chances.

Hey, me and my friend both got the med prep letter and we have been calling and asking the same question! the answer was yes, you are pretty much in!! I also talked to the dean of the admission and she also said you will receive the info soon withing 2 to 3 weeks because they are still deciding on housing and etc. hope it relieves little bit of your stress...

Hello!

Thanks for the congrats!

I went to Rutgers University in New Brunswick New Jersey.

It seems that if everything is good I will attend NYCOM..have u seen their match list?!? *drool* lol

let me know if u have anymore questions!

I sent in my MCAT scores late also (end of January) and I just got an invitation for an interview this week. I sent in my scores late because of a misunderstanding on my part, so I wrote them a letter explaining what happened and how I'm still eager to get into NYCOM.

When I called them about interviews a few weeks ago, if I remember correctly, they said if you don't hear from them about an interview invitation by April, you probably didn't get accepted. But I would call them to make sure.

I'm going in for the interview on 3/17, anyone else?! If any of you had the interviews yet, can you please share how it went?

I don't mean to be an obsessive premed, but when the hell are they planning on sending out my letter? Sheesh. Anyone from the week of 2-9 hear back yet?

The interview at NYCOM is pretty laid back - very conversational, etc. Everybody is extremely friendly. They take you on a tour, financial aid people speak with you, they give you food, etc.

I think in general D.O. schools are more laid back than MD schools when it comes to the interview process.

And btw, I think they're behind on sending the letters out because of the snow days. The ADCOM meets on Fridays, and I know we missed one or two at NYCOM. (I'm a NYCOM employee, as well as an applicant, so that's how I know. haha)

NYCOM interview is extremely relaxed and conversational. My interviewer and I just chatted and cracked jokes for half an hour. Very easy, no need to worry.

I interviewed at 7 MD schools this year (about 12 interviewers total) and I can safely say that they're very laid back, but it probably depends on the school/interviewers. I've heard rumors of some DO schools where they're very confrontational or they drill you for 1.5 hours.

I guess my point is that although my interview at NYCOM seemed shorter than any of the other schools, I'd say it was no more laid back than any other school I went to.

I have my NYCOM interview scheduled for 3/11 at 11 am. I'm just curious, what would be my chances of actually getting accepted? I only ask because it seems that since my interview date is so late I will be interviewing for a waitlist spot. Is this correct or do I have a decent chance of getting a seat for the class of 2014?

Ahh--so excited/nervous/anxious!

I don't know your exact chances, but NYCOM definitely accepts the majority of their interviewees. Also, our tour guides said they had all interviewed in February/March and got in. They said don't worry about how late you interview.

hey, everyone...i am new to sdn and decided to step up. I was also given the opportunity to join med prep this summer to ultimately be part of class 2014.......

When I interviewed 3 years ago, my date was in late February and I was accepted. I'd say you have a good chance of being accepted too. Don't be nervous! It's really a laid back interview day compared to others I had.

Has anyone received anything from the Financial Aid office after filling out their FAFSA? If yes, how long after the FAFSA was submitted? Thanks everyone.

anybody who fills out a fafsa and declares themself an independent should be able to get all the aid they need right? (up to the COA of course)

Yes; anybody entering a professional program is automatically considered independent. But I feel bad for you if you'll actually borrow up to the COA...

Anybody who was waitlisted/accepted - what were your gpa/mcat scores like? Kind of curious about where I stand, I'd rather not get my hopes up for an acceptance!

As of tomorrow, its been a MONTH.. and no word from NYCOM for 2/9.... getting a little ridiculous lol

I interviewed on 2/9 and I haven't heard anything either. Each time I walk to my mailbox and there is nothing in it from NYCOM a little piece of me dies.😡

🙁

Me too. Every day I'm hoping and I haven't received any acceptances so this is a really big deal for me. I almost want to give them an update letter.

unofficial word on the street is that close to 80% of NYCOM interviews result in an acceptance so don't stress! try not to come off as psycho during your interview and you should be fine.

Yeah, but with my luck this season I'll be rejected since I've been rejected/waitlisted at seven other schools.

Thanks for the help! 🙂

I called the admissions office today and they said letters were mailed out on 3/6 for the people that interviewed on 2/9. Make sure you check your mail the next couple of days!

Anyone else still waiting to hear about an interview invite? I've been complete since December. All I received was an email about the MedPrep program asking me to submit my tax information. The letter didn't say anything about interviewing or being accepted to MedPrep. It just said that I classified myself as economically disadvantaged and they needed my tax information from 2008. I received this email on January 4th and submitted the paper work to the a few days later. Did anyone else get this letter or anyone else in the same boat? Do you think there is a chance for at least an interview still? NYCOM is my top choice since I live 20 minutes away from the school.

I guess that means they met Friday, decided who gets in, and made up the letters to be sent out Saturday?

Sounds about right. I believe the committee meets on Fridays.

Ok, let me down easy...

Friend applied to NYCOM in Oct/Nov, received the secondary, etc. We have not heard back since.

Stats:

NY resident
Boston University '09
GPA: 3.2 (maybe 3.3)
MCAT: 29Q

She sent an update letter yesterday, research was just published that she worked on in college.

I know that her cousin just got an interview offer a few days ago, so NYCOM is not done interviewing.

Any info or recommendations would be appreciated!

Just called my parents. Nothing again.

I'm sure someone would have posted by now, but did anyone get anything (from the 2-9 interview)?

Anyone who was accepted? When was your enveloped postmarked and when did you get it? Was it 1st class mail or bulk?
