NYCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Does anyone actually get rejected after an interview at NYCOM? or is it that NYCOM just puts all the people who were not accepted on a waitlist?

Also does anyone know how many people they accept every year?

Hey guys,
Has anyone who interviewed on 3/11 hear anything? I called The school on Wed they said they sent something on Monday but I have yet to receive any word.

😕😕😕

Interviewed in the morning group of 03/16... waitlisted 🙁

Does anyone know if NYCOM's waitlist is ranked?

So far everyone who has posted that interviewed on 3/16 has been waitlisted. not cool

Same here, interviewed on 3/16 and wait listed... Anyone accepted for 3/16 interview???

I don't think you guys should be so negative, even though waitlist sounds sort of bleak to you - a lot of people withdraw their acceptances, especially in this next month or so, since most MD applicants use NYCOM (and other DO's) as their "safety," unfortunately. So as people get acceptances to their other choices they'll be withdrawing and those waitlisted should start getting spots in the class.

i too was waitlisted after a 3/16 interview. im still hoping to get in since this is my last chance at medical school, but this year every schools been getting a lot more applications so our chances of getting in off the waitlist arent as great as they were in previous years

Where you in the morning group?

Thats true, been a competitive year. Most schools have become full earlier in the season than previous years. I am kind of in the same situation as you.

Yep I was in the morning session. Well hopefully we'll still get in!

Got it today wait listed +pissed+

i guess the rumor about nycom accepting 90%+ of their interviewees was just a rumor.

It probably is true, but you're among the very last interviewees, so the class is probably nearly full at this point.

They've been interviewing since probably November or December, so OF COURSE your chances start to slip as it gets later in the application cycle.

I know they finished giving out interviews, but just wondering if interviews are still going on or are they all finished. Anyone know?

It looks like high acceptance rate post interview until march. Then high waitlists after march. They are probably making sure they will have enough students for entering class of 2010. As students withdraw they can fill up class again with potential students. Good luck to all of ya!

I called admissions today to ask, they said there is an internal ranking system, but they don't share the details with students.

Anyone receive any updates from med-prep yet? I'm itching to find out more details...

I called the admissions today and she said the medprep letters went out today!!

i thought it would be an information packet but she said med prep letters...oh well, at least we will get something soon!

Received my med prep packet today. It includes a housing application, an immunization form and 2 enclosed envelopes. The housing fee is $1263.50 for 6 weeks. I will apply for housing. Does anyone who is in the med prep apply for it?

How are you guys planning to get health insurance? I currently don't have any.

NYCOM offers health Insurance to all students, actually its required, and they will add the cost to your tuition. But its not too much extra, I think $1,500?

NYCOM typically accepts around 300 students, and the Rumor of accepting all of the interviewees is definitely Just a Rumor. NYCOM is one of the hardest DO schools to get into. They do however pull people off the wait list, I know a lot of people who got in through the wait list. There is some spots waiting on the med prep program, if they don't pass then seats will be open. Don't stress out too much guys, Being that you were wait listed means you were qualified for acceptance but may have entered the cycle too late since they filled up. Pretty much a guarantee that if you apply early next year you will have a shot somewhere.

Hey Guys,
New to SDN! All fellow Med prep people, I just received my packet today! I will see you all in May!:highfive:

If you look back about 4 5 pages people talk about it for very very long time. Its for people with financial disadvantage and if they pass the class given during summer they are accepted.

Where are you located? I live about 6 hrs away from the school, and they sent them out last Thursday, and I received mine yesterday. Don't worry, I'm sure it is on its way!!!

Sorry, still getting used to this site.

I also live in Philly, but I am pretty sure you will get yours soon. I think the consensus here is that if you're offered a chance to apply, you will be accepted via med prep.

Hey fellow MED-PREPers,
I got the package yesterday. The housing provided by Hofstra U. is just way too expensive to me (plus, I'm not sure if the daily shuttle will be available for free). So I'm looking to share an apartment. Please let me know if you're interested!

Ahh yes, I forgot to provide an 'important' piece of info: I'm female. I prefer a female roommate if there are only 2 of us sharing the appt, but if there're more than 2, then I don't care as long as 2 of us are female.

Does anyone know how much stipend each student are going to get for attending the summer HCOP (med-prep) program?

I talked to a woman on the phone today and she said that we definitely would get a stipend, but she was unsure as to if it would be one lump sum or some sort of weekly allowance...she also sort of beat around it when I asked her the amount. She said they weren't really sure where they were getting the money for it also, lol. Sorry I couldn't provide more info.
