I think the interviewer and I hit it off real well. I'm speculating that I might be placed on the WL or rejected because another member on this forum who interviewed on the 20th received their acceptance yesterday. I live in Queens and I still haven't received mine.

Those who interviewed on the week of 01/18 to 01/22 please step up. 🙂

So far only SuiteP from Central Jersey who interviewed on the 20th of Jan received his/her acceptance from NYCOM.

I heard people did this a lot and it worked most (all) the time. Call the adcom and tell them you are accepted into a DO program, but you have a couple days to pay the deposit fee. Since you were interviewed for NYCOM and it is your number one choice, you would rather pay this deposit fee to them rather than your accepted medical school. Thus, you would like to know of a decision. You may even add that you were even offered a spot on their HCOP program, which means that you (parents) are living on a tight budget and you can't afford to make two $1500 deposit

I think I was probably interviewed for MEDPREP and I am totally ok with that. I agree with nobu, it is a really good way for you to see what med school is really like and to figure out your strengths and weaknesses. NYCOM is my first choice...UMDNJ is my second and I am on their wait list...I think I would definitely do the program. USB you should reconsider it. Who was your interviewer? I thought I hit it off really well with mine as well.

Honestly, Blueskies, I would go to this program even though I was accepted into a MD program. I am for real! Going to this program does not mean going to NYCOM, if you know what I mean!

I think I know why your file is ON HOLD. This is pure speculation, of course! I think your file has been selected for MED-PREP. However, they will NOT make that final decision unless they receive your parents and your income tax return forms. Once, you email them as a pdf or fax it to them, then they will make a decision about your file. It happened to my friend. He interviewed a while back. Got this HCOP email and ignored it. It is until after he sent in the necessary income tax return forms (1040A, EZ, etc) that they made a decision about his application.

I think the same thing is true with your application. You mentioned earlier that you asked to withdraw from HCOP. If you did that, call them and tell them that you are reconsidering your option since NYCOM, after all, is your first choice. Then, tell them that you are faxing or emailing the necessary income tax forms.

If that solves your problem, you will owe me a beer

I think your theory is correct. Like I said a few days ago, I got a phone call telling me to fax my parents' tax forms over IMMEDIATELY, because without them the committee could not make a decision about my application. This goes along with what you are saying.

UBS stick, I also heard the adcom is meeting today to make decisions. So, If i were you, I would fax my income tax IMMEDIATELY!!!

Those of you who interviewed from Jan 25 to Feb. 4 and those whose files have been placed on hold for reasons such as missing income tax returns and have since sent the appropriate documents should hear by next week...Don't quote me, just my speculation. I would like to know whether I am right or wrong. Can anyone inform us of a decision by next week if they were interviewed during that time frame???

Thank you guys! I'm at work and don't have access to my tax nor access to my parents' tax information. I guess I'll have to wait until the next adcom gathering.

I don't know if the lady over the phone misunderstood me when I asked whether I'm considered for regular ad or Med-Prep ad when she answered regular ad. Oh well, I guess only time will tell and I haven't received any calls from NYCOM.

Be it NYCOM or not, I'm just glad I got into somewhere but NYCOM acceptance would be ideal. 😉

Congratulations!! Med-Prep program would be ideal for me, I want an acceptance via Med-Prep more so than via regular admission. I submitted my tax information a week ago and no one gave me a call since. Guess I will wait and see.

The reason, i think, UBS stick got the called is because his file has been idled since the last adcom meeting. So, they called him to inform him whether he wants that position. Otherwise, he would have received the pink slip. It seems USB Stick would not have been accepted into the regular route, but rather through MED-PREP.

I would say that we wouldn't have known as much about MED-PREP/HCOP program as we have now had we not started the argument in the first place. Some of the things you have said are valid, while others seem dubious. Unless you have credible sources to back up the stuff you said, I would remain duobtful. I meant how do you know there is an AdCom Meeting today without knowing where you got the source.

I don't want to take sides, but he was correct about several things...if you do a search on sdn and type "nycom med prep" a bunch of discussions come up, dating back several years. A lot of them are students who went through medprep, and the stuff robu says seems to go along with what they say. all the students who did it said it was a good experience.

I got a letter asking me to apply for MEDPREP, too, but they didn't say I've been accepted yet. How many applicants are accepted each year?? I'm not familiar with MEDPREP. Where can I read more about this program?

I think you have to be economically/socially disvantaged in order to be considered for this MED-PREP/HCOP program. Usually they send you an email after your interview (only selected few) asking you to submit your parents' and your 2008 income tax returns. MED-PREP is a part of HCOP program. To clarify myself, I found this statement from a reliable source.

-NYIT has been awarded a three-year, $1 million Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) grant from the U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). The project, a joint effort of the Academic and Student Affairs divisions of NYIT's College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM), targets disadvantaged students who are interested in medical and health careers by offering enrichment and skill-building activities, assisting with college and financial aid applications, and facilitating entry into medical schools. It will also increase the primary care clerkship rotations available to NYCOM students with preceptors, providing culturally competent primary care to vulnerable populations.-

So after doing a little bit research on MED-PREP, both robu058 and I seemed to make some mistaken assumptions. There is really only one program; MED-PREP is really a part of the HCOP program and they are not distinct; people who got accepted through HCOP/MED-PREP program have to attend the 6-week summer classes and maintain a certain gpa in order to be considered for an acceptance to NYCOM.

Also, I think this is how the process goes. HCOP/MED-PREP are only available to those who did not get accepted via regular acceptance in the first place. The Admissions Committee, then, looked at the pool of interviewees who are capable of doing well and disvantaged, and offered them a conditional acceptance in the form of HCOP. Please take note that if you decline this offer, you are still not entitled for a regular acceptance. You might end up being on the waitlist. The last paragraph is mere speculation which I summed up from past Med-Prep threads.

I can see why I didn't get accepted even though my GPA's and MCAT's are supercompetitive for NYCOM and my interview went well. My probrem is I have never obtained a DO physician letter. Correct me if I am wrong.

bowlin, I dont think that's it...nycom does not require a LOR from a DO, it is just recommended (I got this from both the nycom website and the booklet that the aacom puts out each year detailing every d.o. school). it probably would have helped a little, but I doubt it was a make or break situation.

I understand that a LOR from a DO is not a requirement; otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten an interview. I meant having a DO letter is strongly recommended and carries more weight.

Yea...I still have trouble believing that that alone can overpower your very competitive GPA's and MCAT score. Besides, if it really WAS that important, nycom would make it a requirement...

Well, that was the only logical explanation I could come up with. Of course, it was my speculation. Most of other interviewees during my interview date have heard back from NYCOM sometimes around Christmas.

The lady from the Admissions Office did call me a few weeks ago and ask me to submit the tax info. I did ask her about the decision and she said something about that I should submit my tax info in order to find it out. I wouldn't want to get in yet so I can avoid paying the deposit. MED-PREP is ideal for me and I hope I get it.

Any attending NYCOM student explain how H/P/F system works at NYCOM? Are students ranked?

H = top 10% of the class, determined by a composite grade at the end of the system
P = above 70% on all final grades
F = below 70% on final grades

This only changes if the average for the class falls below a 70%. This has not happened so far.

Students are not ranked until it comes time to apply for residency, I believe.

Hey, I know they're the same and I also understand that you pretty much answered my previous questions, but would you ask your friend for me whether if getting the letter is almost synonymous with getting an acceptance for Med-Prep and whether if I am required to attend NYCOM upon successful completion of the program? I really like to attend the program and NYCOM is one of my top choices; however, I would like to leave my options open for future possibilities.
