This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
ughh I would have went tomorrow haha (i live 20 min away)! Yes cant wait!!

So do I... or I thought.. but it took an hour in traffic my morning. Then again there was a big accident that stopped traffic. Just be prepared to leave early.

For people that interviewed... How was the day scheduled and did you find the 1 on 1 interviewers stressful? I have my interview Jan 12 in the AM.

good luck! i havent interviewed yet but i know a bunch of current students who said its super relaxed. You start with breakfast, interview, and then take a tour of the facilities. If I find out specifics from them I will let you know!

Check out the interview section of the forum for the most detail.

I interviewed yesterday in the PM, but I think AM and PM are roughly the same. We first heard from admissions about their programs, then from financial aid, then from the director of the DPC (the PBL tract). Then lunch with student ambassadors (who were very straight forward with their experiences), then the tour. Then the interview (which was very relaxed and comfortable.) All in all, I was done in about 3 hours.

Hope that helps. Let me know if I can offer any other help (every little helps.)

First off, us Rochester people need to stick together😎. Seriously though, thanks for providing some inside on how the day was structured... I'm pretty sure it is the same for the morning except that we have are interview first.

Did you find where you had to go easy enough? I am heading down Mon and spending the night..so I will try to find where I need to go then for my Tuesday Interview.

Instate as well, probably 30 mins away. queens baby!!

So I'm getting ready for my interview this week and trying to figure out... does NYCOM ask about ethical issues? I can't find any evidence of this throughout the thread or interview feedback... I was just wondering if anyone had any insight.

Thanks!

Some interviewers do ask ethical questions. Its not a mandatory question, but some interviews like asking ethics questions...

Last year at my interview, I was asked about healthcare reform and the like - you never know what they might ask, depends on the interviewer!

My interviewer was pretty laid back..just make sure you thoroughly read over your secondary. My interviewer opened ip with giving me directions to a coin museum because in my app I stated I collected coins. Also asked on shadowing experiences and how confident you wanted to be a doctor. Importantly, be ready to ask questions back.

For those of you who have gotten interviews, how long did it take to hear about them after your secondaries were complete? Mine have been complete since around the 10th of November and I haven't heard back from ANY schools yet. I really hope I hear from NYCOM. (i'm from NJ).

I submitted my primary in November, did anyone else who submitted in November receive any interviews?

I was complete in the middle of Sept! and still no interview

Hey everybody, new here on SD forum so this is my first post. I received notice that I was granted an interview at NYCOM today via email... I'm concerned about my MCAT which is a 24. I'm retaking it at the end of January but was hoping I may still be in the running despite the low score if my other stats were considered... I have a 3.7c and 3.83s GPA. I've been a NJ EMT for 5 years, the Lieutenant of my volunteer first aid squad, work as an EMT in Atlantic City, have shadowing experience (OMM, trauma surgery, cardiology) and have a first author paper published in Behavioral Brain Research. I was interviewed at UMDNJ-SOM and waitlisted so I'm very discouraged, hopefully my interview at NYCOM is another chance for me. Just wanted to know some people's thoughts regarding my acceptance with such a sub par MCAT. (I'm very frustrated about this as I've spent time preparing but just cannot seem to do well on this test. And I've watched as friends who worked a lot less hard in undergrad and earned GPAs of 3.3 or 3.4 walk right into med school because of their MCAT was slightly higher than mine while all my hard work in college seems to have fallen by the wayside).

If you received an interview invite, you are VERY close to getting an offer of acceptance, and once you're accepted the MCAT doesn't matter anymore. All you have to do is get through the interview, good luck!! and congrats on the interview invite.

Also from CT, not a peep since early November. I really like this school but I'm starting to get concerned at this point. Has anyone received rejections or "deferred list" decisions yet? I'm wondering if NYCOM is one of those schools that leaves all the rejections hanging until the summertime.....

When do you guys think is the cutoff point when if you haven't heard from them about an interview you should just give up. If I dont get into NYCOM I will have to move out of state, find a new apt., and my wife will have to find a new job. I'm thinking if I don't hear from them by April 1, I should just start my moving plans. What do you guys think?

I think its a good plan

Does anyone else feel "turned off" regarding NYCOM due to the manner in which their admissions office is handling admissions?

Aside from the fact that they sit on people's applications FOREVER without providing any updates regarding interview invites, the few times I have called to inquire about the status of my application, they have been hostile towards me and were clearly very annoyed by the phonecall.

Am I the only one who has experienced this or have others had similar experiences?

HAHA yea you met the grouch... There is one secretary in the admissions office who is a real grouch. I can tell you as a student aside from her everyone else is very friendly. I know where you are coming from, but dont let that grouch change your opinion.

yeah. I know a couple of other applicants that have been turned off by the application process at NYCOM. I, myself, try not to take it personally and remind myself that they probably receive a higher number of applicants than other schools. The fact that I paid $60 for my secondary application and can't even call to see the status of my application particularly annoyed me but ehh.

I'm not 100% on this, but my friend had a "representative" from NYCOM come to his school and they said they actually don't ever send out rejection letters. Classes just start and if you haven't heard by that point, you can safely assume you didn't get in. Kind of weird they just leave you hanging like that but understandable because there isn't enough time/resources?

Also: think about that number of applicants, add in the stereotypical type A personality type of med school applicants (so you KNOW half of them are calling the school to ask for updates)... I can't say I blame a secretary for being grouchy after a million phone calls

There were schools that didn't send me their "rejection" until I had already started my classes at NYCOM (I didn't even interview at said schools). At that point, why bother? What a waste of paper.

Yeah its a waste of paper. But strangely enough, my rejection letters bring me closure. Its like: "oh, know I know that my application didn't get lost in a black hole...you actually looked at it and decided I wasn't a good fit.

I don't know. Maybe I'm just weird like that....lol

You're not weird. What you are referring to is called common courtesy. And the paper issue does not hold any clout whatsoever, being that they could respond with an email. It does not take THAT much effort. If they cashed applicants' checks or charged their credit cards for secondaries, they should take the time to respond to EVERYONE they decided to take bank from, in some shape or form. It should be be standard procedure. Unfortunately that may not be the case. Easy money.

BINGO!!!

Exactly...common courtesy. NYCOM seems to be lacking this in spades.
Yes I understand that they have tons of applicants and tons of obsessive applicants calling them for updates (but so does EVERY school), but that doesn't excuse the type of attitude you receive when you attempt to contact them.

If you apply to a school and months after month goes by with no word, I don't think it's out of line to give the school a call to make an inquiry.
However if you try this, rest assured you will be snapped at and told curtly, "we don't do updates".

Obviously this doesn't suggest that NYCOM is a unfriendly place or anything like that, but I will admit that my interactions with them have left a bad taste in my mouth.

Let me chime in... class of 2014 here.

The thing you guys have to understand about NYCOM is that anything related to the administration is notoriously piss poor.

Most of the faculty are great and the staff works really hard... but administrative stuff blows the big one.

So yeah it is common courtesy to receive rejections and what not, but oh well. NYCOM is not the only school that does not send formal rejections, I didn't get one from EVMS or VA tech last year.

I enjoy NYCOM thoroughly and am happy to be here, just a little perspective for you guys.

PS: if anyone has any questions about anything related to school shoot me a message. I will be very honest.

First impressions usually matter most. And just because NYCOM is not the only school that doesn't send out the rejections, doesn't make it any better. It just means they have company.

Thanks for reaching out though. At least their students seem cool.

they're probably just overwhelmed from the number of applications. i called up the office a week ago and asked whether they were still doing interviews and basically whether my chances of getting in were over. the lady who answered was very nice and said that they received a huge amount of applications so things are going slower than usual and that interviewing would be continuing on through april. however, it'd be nice if i could get one now...

also if you look at the aacomas data from last year (i googled it) it says that total first year enrollment is 313 (although on nycom's website is says 279). Either way, i think (but am not sure) that schools usually accept twice the number of available spots because they know that there are some people who are going to decide to go somewhere else. So hopefully if they're interviewing people, its not for waitlist spots. Good luck to everyone here, here's hoping that those of us who are still waiting will get an invite soon!

btw, HalfBloodPrince, totally diggin' the username.

I received an interview on January 11th and only had a 24Q on the MCAT although I had other things going for me. So for all of you that are worried with low scores, they don't just look at the MCAT. I am from NY tho.

Hello,

I have an afternoon interview on the 25th. Anyone interested in splitting a cab from the East Norwich Inn to school? I'm traveling by train/bus and not renting a car...

Anyone interested please let me know!

I'm just saying that, to me, it's equally rude to send a letter or e-mail in August. Just don't effing bother at that point, because it's obvious what the answer is. This was my experience with MD & DO schools alike last year.

Also a member of the class of 2014, and I can tell you, NYCOM does have some issues with administration and getting things to run smoothly sometimes. I don't regret coming here, but it gets frustrating sometimes.

How long is the turn around after interviews? Looks like ppl that interviewed in nov found out in late December. Can't find another interviews until Jan.

Do they send out snail mail, call, or email?
