NYCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey Postal, that's actually what I did in my update letter, I stated why NYCOM was my absolute top choice (I expanded upon something I had mentioned in my supplemental app) in addition to including updates. Honestly, you have nothing to lose. For anyone whose interested I had my interview invite on the sixteenth and its for the first week or march. And every time I have talked to the admissions office they said they will be interviewing until april. So you have a little bit of time but I would sent it in soon. Good luck! :xf:

Thanks for the reply. To whom did you send your stuff to?

Does anyone know what percentage of students interviewed are actually accepted?? I have seen multiple percentages floating around on this forum but was wondering if someone asked the admissions office or knows a definite number?? Thanks!!!

according to the director of admissions, he said they accept about 2/3 of the people they interview

Hmmmm.....Just received an interview invite today. Wasn't expecting one from them since it has been dead silence from them ever since I applied back in late September. It's certainly a welcome surprise, but I am not sure how hopeful I should be considering my interview is March 3rd and I can't imagine they will be swimming with seats to offer this late in the game.

Looking forward to seeing the school though.

And Postal, I say go for it with a letter of intent. I can see how you might be concerned that it would seem presumptuous, but I really think it can't hurt and will show your interest in the school. Good luck.

Thanks! Mannnnn....if you don't want your interview, I'll take it!
I'm gonna go for it with the letter of intent/interest.(which ever it is)

I just sent it in through snail mail to the office of admissions, although that was a couple of weeks ago. I also followed up with a phone call, although I'm pretty sure I lucked out because I got a really nice lady who was able to help me out.

i'm screwed 😱

Why would you be screwed!? I have a feeling you will get in! I think the school genuinely wants people who want them, so just be yourself and show your love for the school and you will do fine😀

fyi I realize its much easier being on the other side, as I was a nervous reck before I got my letter lol...but its still good advice that i tried to take myself!

I wouldn't assume that! I interviewed on March 3rd last year, exactly, and I was accepted, not waitlisted 😀

Considering you didn't submit until late September (that's really late to apply), you should consider yourself lucky to have gotten an interview at all, even this late in the game.

Every interview is a chance for acceptance, always give them your best shot. I know you may have gotten other acceptances, but for others that havent, being on the waitlist isn't necessarily a bad thing, it means the school would have accepted you if it had more seats in its class. Reapply very early the next year and you will have a very good shot. Dont forget NYCOM also has a Medprep program, its a very good opportunity for people with below average stats for NYCOM to prove they should be allowed the chance for an acceptance, but usually every other part of your app/resume should be amazing...

Thank you for the support AerobixChica, I'm just afraid that there aren't that many seats available and there are so many good applicants out there so its a tad difficult not to feel somewhat overwhelmed?😳 But thank you very much for the advice! If you don't mind me asking, did you do a morning or an afternoon interview session?

I'm sure there will be seats open until the very end of interviewing. Even in the not-so-worst case scenario of being on a wait list, there may be some movement. Stay positive, and do you're best on the interview. Getting to that stage means you've earned it and that you're qualified. They are interested in you. Now demonstrate you're interest in them, form a mutual connection, and put your best foot forward.

Hey, When was the letter postmarked? Thanks!

It was was postmarked February 4th. So they sent the packet in under two weeks from my interview date (1/25).

If you have an interview I would say don't worry because I got accepted quickly and I don't know why really. The interview was quick and they didn't ask much and it's not like my stats are all that great. They are completely average for the school actually. Also, the whole interview day is low stress. Just be yourself and show how interesting you are in NYCOM.

I had an afternoon interview which I actually ended up liking because you do the tour and talk to everyone first, which def gives you an advantage when asking questions. But I would imagine the morning is favorable since you get it over with right away!

I heard from a friend that many people in her class interviewed in the spring and got accepted...also i would imagine getting waitlisted isnt the worst thing since I know many people use nycom as a backup plan and will be giving up their acceptances to go elsewhere, so I would imagine there is lots of movement. (I know its frustrating when your first choice school is someones backup plan- but thats reality!) Just stay positive and relaxed!!

NYCOM has very little waitlist movement actually (it moves each year, but not too much) because it is actually a first choice school for most applicants. NYCOM does a pretty good job of narrowing down acceptances to people who will go there, that being said probably only 20 will move off the waitlist on average each year

quick question: when does FAFSA info have to be in by in order to be considered for fin aid (i remember in college the deadline was March 15th)? and should you wait until after being admitted, or send the information out anyway?

Thanks for the advice and support Longshanks! This is actually my first interview, so the fact that its my top choice probably makes this a lot more nerve wracking than usual. Did you or anyone else who interviewed get ethical questions? I'm assuming the basic ones such as tell me about yourself, why nycom, why osteopathic, whats something that's not on your app, or explain this activity etc. are all going to be asked. And once again, thank you! 🙂

Thanks for the reply AerobixChica! I have a question, did you know the exact time that you would interview before the lunch? And is the lunch just with students or with faculty as well? Thank you so much 🙂

I can answer this for you... The interview timing is not disclosed, so an interviewer will come in and call out your name when it is your time, for the most part, you do not know when you are interviewing. The lunch is just with students, so you can ask them anything, and then they give you a tour of campus. As far as the questions im pretty sure you are right on track, some interviewers but not all will ask ethical questions, but as long as you can back up your stance, they will be ok with your answers.

haha oops then i take it back! hope none of you get waitlisted 🙂

Its a very conversational interview. You'll do fine. I'm exhausted at the moment from traveling, but I will PM you tomorrow specifics about my experience and maybe some tips. Don't be discouraged if you have read my earlier posts a few months ago about the interview being extremely stressful and confrontational - there was a specific reason for this that I will explain in private. For the most part though, it is a behavioral interview and they just want to see who you are and your perspective.

For SDNers with interviews:

This is a private message I sent to someone in Jan. Hope it helps.

You will be fine. Just relax and enjoy the experience.

First off, the day is situated ( morning interview that I had) where you arrive at 8:45 am to sign in. At 9 interviews start...I was the first to arrive and first to go, but they say that is not the way it works. There were ten people being interviewed and two interviewers..so that's five per interviewer. My guy was a PhD in anatomy and liked to talk. It was very conversation and laid back. His interviews ranged from 30 mins to an hour ( mine was 45 ish). The other guy interviewing was very short...like 5 mins short. I think he had a meeting to get to by 10. Once you interview you wait till everyones done and at 11 there is a PBL talk and then a finical aid talk. After which, there is lunch with the students and then a tour.

Okay...so the meat of the matter. Like I said my interviewer liked to talk. When I went into " his" office he proceeded to give me direction to a coin museum and talk about that. I mentioned in my secondary that one of my childhood hobbies was collecting old and foreign coins. He deff read my primary and secondary so I would suggest re-reading them and being able to talk about that. He actually pointed out a mistake on my secondary...which was not a mistake, but I didn't argue. We talked about my shadowing experience and what I took away/ saw while doing it. Why was I confident I wanted to be a doctor? Yada, yada...don't remember many questions after that. Make sure you have questions for him/her..like pros and cons for each pathway offered. Student/mentor programs? Study abroad opportunities? Research availability based on pathway chosen?

Hope it helps! Best of luck!

Cheers,

Hahahaha was this interviewer by chance Dr. Hill? Sounds like him - you got lucky as far as interviewers go, he's pretty much amazing.

I meet Dr. Hill on the tour...he seems like a pretty cool guy. However, my interviewer was Dr. Solounias.

HAHA, EVEN BETTER. I knew it had to be one of the 2 - Dr. Solounias is the man. The entire Anatomy Department is pretty much amazing - awesome people & great teachers all around.

Dr. Solounias is just a special breed - the man is absolutely hilarious & he loves teaching us. His jokes/stories never get old. If you're lucky enough to be taught by Nikos next year, maybe he'll tell you about the time he dated a shark.

Question...what can the average NYCOM student expect to receive in financial aid? I was always curious about how the numbers worked. For example, from the D.O. CIB, NYCOM has an annual tuition of around $42,000, which is about $15,000 more per year than LECOM. However, the average NYCOM indebtedness is $178,000 compared to $158,000 for LECOM, which is only a difference of $20,000, when it should be more like $60,000.

Forgive my naivete, but is that difference largely made up from grants that NYCOM provides? So in the fend there isn't THAT much of a difference between their two tuitions?

Still waiting... and getting more frustrated by the day. Really thought I'd hear back by now.

Friend of mine interviewed Feb 3rd and hasn't heard anything yet.

I haven't heard of people getting grants from NYCOM, but the financial aid office is awesome for pushing us through every scholarship we could possibly apply for. NYCOM also has a pretty good amount of people on HPSP scholarships, so they graduate with 0 debt. Also many people at NYCOM can live with family or friends instead of paying rent due to the location, versus LECOM in the middle of nowhere so everyone pays rent. Rent and living expenses greatly raise your debt. NYCOM also has a lot of rotation sites so you can plan them out to stay in one area in one apartment, therefore no moving costs unlike LECOM (where I heard you may be moving quite a bit). SO in all, cheaper tuition plus higher costs, or more tuition with lower costs, both average to equivalent figures.

off the subject- i started the nycom c/o 2015 thread in the osteopathic medicine-school specific thread forum (as opposed to the pre-med forum)...so stop by class of 2015 😀

LOVED the school, especially the idea of developing internat'l rotations. Other people at my interview were nice too, there were seven of us.

Longshanks, I had a similar experience at the interview as you, unfortunately. My dude was really intense, not conversational like the rest of you lucky people had, but confrontational. 🙁 The only questions he asked about me were my GPA and MCAT scores, (I thought the interview was supposed to be about getting to know me!) and then he asked me an ethical question (he said "good answer" after what I said, don't know what that will mean in the long run). And then he asked if I had any questions. Seemed really uninterested in being there, and he was really off-putting. He was also the only interviewer today.

It saddens me because I really would love to be there, and everyone else from the admissions coordinator to the student ambassadors and everyone else we accidentally ran into during the tour was super super nice. They gave us the Match list for 2009 and it looked phenomenal. Still keeping my fingers crossed and hoping he didn't ruin everything for me. :xf:

OMG I finally got invited to an interview! Does anyone know how full the class is already? I'm interviewing on March 8th.

Congrats! To be honest nobody would know this... but NYCOM has interviewed 560 people by the end of this week ( but again not every interview resulted in an acceptance, and not everyone accepted probably sent a deposit, so calculating how many spots are left is impossible and NYCOM wont tell right now)

congrats angryazn~ would you mind sharing how you were notified of an interview? Thanks and best wishes on your interview!
