NYCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are they still sending out interview invites or have the invites stopped and they are only going to be picking people from the waitlist who have already interviewed?? Thanks

I think Interviews are just about over, They were just interviewing people for the emigre program last week, they are traditionally the last group interviewed... Try to be complete in July next year for better chances

I know people that are interviewing in the next three weeks.

Yea I think invites are definitely over, and they are wrapping up interviews the next few weeks

A friend of mine submitted by the deadline in February, and he has his interview this week, lol. But he has really great stats...so yeah, the whole application process has no hard and fast rule for receiving an interview, it does suck indeed. Don't lose hope though, def. call and ask about your status. Good luck.

does anyone have an idea of when they might release the class schedule for our class?

The actual class schedule/syllabus for your first block won't be given to you until sometime during Orientation. You don't get a set weekly schedule like in undergrad, it varies week to week.

Hey I called and asked. Orientation is august 12th and classes begin august 15th.

I got a snail mail letter last week about setting up your nycom email address that had to be done in 5 days- not sure why! Anyways its very exciting!
I haven't gotten that yet but did you receive it after you sent in your transcript and immunization form?

Hey guys! I'm a long time SDN creeper, first time poster who recently interview at NYCOM (4/13 to be exact). I was just wondering if you guys had any idea on whether I was just interviewing for wait list at that point, or if NYCOM still had seats open?

recently gave up my seat so there may still be seats open. Good luck!

interviewed mid march havent heard back. Is this bad?

I was wondering if anyone knew what the commute is like from midtown manhattan to school? I'm thinking of living in the city since I have a really good deal for price and keeping my car to commute. Is it a reasonable drive? I feel like i'd be able to do a 35 minute drive but nothing more than 40 minutes. lol Thanks in advance.

Maybe a half hour if everything worked out perfectly (ie. @ 4 in the morning). On a typical morning I'd expect at least 50 minutes to an hour. Traffic is going to be going the other way but still, factoring in the time it takes to get out of Manhattan, tolls, tunnels, bridges, I would expect you'd need at least an hour, maybe a little less. Traffic in NYC is unpredictable, but in the morning you'll be going against it. If you live in midtown theres always LIRR, but you'd need to have a way to get from the station to school. There's a way to do it using shuttles and buses but I never did it so I can't contest to how easy it is.

Does anyone know what the normal schedule is for the first year at NYCOM?
Also, is the lecture streamed online live? or is it posted later in the day? I think I'm going to be living in the city cause I have a better deal on rent but I wanted to see if there would be days during the week when I wouldn't have to drive to campus and watch the lectures at home. Do you guys think this is a good idea? is there anyone else in the city that commutes? I did a 'test' drive yesterday and it took 40 minutes to school around 8:00am and 1 hour the trip home around 5 pm. Thanks in advance

Interviewed 4/14... anyone heard from that interview date yet? I figured we might hear by 5/1...

I don't recommend this. First of all, they stop posting the lectures online if attendance drops to low. Not cool. Don't be that guy. Secondly, the lectures are posted in the afternoon after class is over. Finally, current students have definitely recommended that you attend each lecture. Although the lecture is recorded they have said that there subtleties that you will miss.

I got mine after I sent in my transcripts but I have yet to send in my immunization paperwork...(If that helps)

I also interviewed on 3/29 (afternoon session) and I haven't heard anything either. I'm starting to get quite antsy myself...I thought about calling them tomorrow, but figured I would wait until the end of the week (after Passover ends).
I think our responses have been delayed because of the Easter/Passover holidays....

I also interviewed in mid-march and haven't heard anything. Glad I'm not the only one! I called the admissions office and they gave me a generic response saying the committee is still meeting.

Yeaaaaa, I actually broke down and called them earlier...they said that "final decisions" (don't know what that means exactly..) would be going out the end of this week/ early next week. So, I assume that those of us in limbo (seems to be enough people) will know in the next week. Please share the good news when you hear!! Goodluck to all!!

Waitlisted. interviewed 3/29. MCAT 29Q GPA 3.5

i got waitlisted today too. interviewed 3/17

Sorry =( But there's always movement on the waitlist from what I've heard...Do you mind volunteering if you were the Am/Pm session? Just curious....

I'm still in limbo =(

i feel like this has already been answered before, but is nycom silent rejection? I interviewed mid march and still no word...seeing some people got waitlist..jus curious if they will even contact me if i am rejected.

Did they notify you guys by phone or email?
I am still waiting interviewed med April

If they interviewed you, you will hear back. You have to, otherwise that would be entirely inappropriate. Schools that supposedly "silent reject" are just pre-interview rejections.

Good luck!

they notify you through mail
has anyone ever gotten accepted without going through a waitlist after having a march or april interview?

This is not true. I just spoke to admissions who said that they do not send rejections.

I don't know if NYCOM rejects anyone post interview...I think they typically accept or waitlist everyone...I wouldn't be surprised if they did silent reject post-interview though...the admissions department here is merciless and doesn't care if they inconvenience you for months. It does get a little better dealing with other departments though...so all is not lost. I know we have a ridiculous acceptance rate post interview...in the high 90%'s...but that is until the class fills up...then I think they just start wait listing and those people end up making up the % who aren't accepted. I really hate the way admissions is run here...but unfortunately the people in that dept don't seem to care.

We were all told that decisions would be received within 2-4 weeks. Some of us were lucky enough to hear back in 1 week, others had to wait over a month. If it's been significantly longer than 4 weeks (like if your interview was mid-March), I don't think it's unreasonable to call the admissions office and ask what's up. They can at least tell you IF a decision has been made (but not your actual decision), or if something has been mailed to you.

To those still waiting, don't lose hope...NYCOM received a record number of applications this year, with the most competitive applicant pool they've ever had. Keep the faith guys.

Well, now I know.

That's crazy...u got waitlisted with those numbers? On a side note what is NYCOM planning to do about Hofstra/NSLIJ students taking up all their rotation slots come third and fourth year?

They won't be taking up all their rotation spots. As it is there were limited spots to begin with for NYCOM students at NorthShoreLIJ. Hofstra's initial class is very small, only 60 students. There may be more of an impact in later years as their enrollment increases but for now it shouldn't be a major issue for the class of 2015 & 2016.

NYCOM's rotations won't be affected by Hofstra at all; NYCOM has a contract with the LIJ hospitals and the LIJ hospitals have teaching faculty from NYCOM for medical education, so there's really no competition in term of rotation spots. LIJ also has programs for dual ACGME and AOA residencies, so it only makes sense for NYCOM students to continue to rotate there. Plenty of hospitals take med students from more than one school; and since NSLIJ is a huge network of hospitals, NYCOM students shouldn't be affected. And Hofsta's first class size is 40, by the way.

I know at first you won't see much of an issue, but my point is that in the future, when the class size doubles or triples, this may be an issue, especially since NYCOM, Einstein, NYU, and Touro rotate through LIJ. Just sayin, there's only so many spots and I want to see how this works out (of course, NYU and Einstein have their own university hospital so it's less of an issue).
