NYCOM Discussion Thread 2010-2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's possible, I'm not entirely sure, but I doub tit's as low as 50%. But for osteopathic schools, it's not really unusual to have a low USMLE pass rate. Considering that the students who opt to take it aren't REQUIRED to pass in order to move on to 3rd year as is the case with the COMLEX, they probably don't take it nearly as seriously. It's also a different exam - the questions are slightly different, etc. so after spending all that time preparing for the COMLEX-style questions, I could imagine it being easy to do poorly on the USMLE.

I just spoke to a fourth year and he said the pass rate is def. Not that low. He said its def. higher than 90%, and he also said that for those people who take USMLE, they take that first and then take the COMLEX, having effectively studied for both. I guess if NYCOM doesn't publish the pass rate then there is no need to worry, they have nothing to prove because they know their students do really well and match into amazing programs.

But if anyone does have the stats, that would be great to see!

No DO school is going to publish a USMLE pass rate. It doesn't seem to be in the AOA or COCA's interest and would go against their PR campaign of osteopathic distinctiveness. Also, if it is that low, it wouldn't be effective in demonstrating that DO graduates are equally qualified to the public. So I wouldn't expect to see any official data on this.

I believe though somewhere in the osteopathic student forum there was a thread where someone posted data the AMA or ACGME (one of the many bodies out there) had claiming DO students who sat for the USMLE had a 50-60% pass rate (nationally), but this may have been from the mid-noughties. It wouldn't be a stretch of the imagination that a decent percentage of students don't do well if they and their school are focused on COMLEX, which is required for you to graduate. I would hope, and believe, that NYCOM students do better on it than other schools, as demonstrated by their match lists, but we won't see official data so it is all speculation.

I think an important question is what is NYCOM's COMLEX pass rate, as this number doesn't seem to be consistent between what you hear from current students or what is posted in the osteopathic student forum, and the school doesn't have it listed anywhere. Though yes, if you are seeking an ACGME residency, knowing how your predecessors at NYCOM performed on the USMLE would be good to know.

DMU gives it out at their interview...their pass rates are in the 80%'s. If you dig deep enough and make some phone calls, you might be able to find out a ballpark %...but NYCOM isn't known for being that willing to go above and beyond so you probably are out of luck.

I stand corrected then 😀.

I would like to see NYCOM's match for this year, but it probably won't get posted until October probably, ha.

Yeah, I want to see the 2011 match list too!! Lol.

I think it is in every school's best interest to produce excellent physicians, whether they are governed by COCA or LCME. Many schools aren't always trying to please those org., just meet requirements -- and that includes state MD schools (I've seen a state MD school get in trouble with the LCME before b/c they were doing things their own way). Case in point, schools want to meet the requirements but they all have their unique identities, they aren't trying to just accept the status quo. NYCOM, from the people I've spoken to, obviously is very proud and loves it when their students match very well, whether that be in AOA or ACGME (or dual-accredited! 😀) residencies).

If you look up LECOM, their admissions page has pictures of students studying from a First Aid USMLE book.

What I'm trying to say is, a school wants to be proud of their student's accomplishments. NYCOM is no different, from what I'm told, and they certainly don't discourage students from taking the USMLE -- in fact, its prob. In their best interest to support whatever their students want to accomplish.

This is what a friend of mine told me recently, after I finally got in touch with him b/c he's so busy lol. He absolutely loves the school.

I think its posted at the school on the departments bulletin board...if you wanna drive there...haha Otherwise call admissions and tell them to email it to you or try to get a hold of the dean of clinical education.

I completely agree with you there. And NYCOM is ambitious in that regard (though I hear their administration is a mess or withdrawn sometimes). My post was based on my opinion of how the AOA acts sometimes, the sentiments I've heard from residents/students, or even state organizations like Pennsylvannia for example not accepting resolution 42 anymore. Just silly things like that, which seem counterproductive.

Yeah, if someone could post the 2011 match list that would be awesome!

And Longshanks, good thing we're not in PA 😀 Lol.

For real.

So it doesn't concern us as much, but it would be nice to still able to practice in PA if one didn't do a OGME-1 TRI for whichever reason. It's all hypotheticals, but let's say there's a dream job opportunity or attending position in PA, or you need to move because of your spouse or family (whatever scenario), and now you can't since you didn't do a TRI (or AOA residency), despite being fully licensed or whatever by an osteopathic and/or allopathic associaiton in NY State. I haven't been following the debate or what they are doing in PA to prevent that, but it'll work out I hope.

Anyone have any more info on this resolution and news pertaining to it?

You guys will probably get a printed copy of the match list when you start in August.

I know we got a copy of the 2010 match list last year. It has all the students' names on it, so maybe posting it online isn't the greatest idea. lol

Aw man I think you're right. The 2010 we got at the interview had names removed, so if the 2011 was like that, it might be more appropriate. I don't mind waiting though, just one more thing to be looking forward to.

Lol I was given the 2009 one.

I'm in the class of 2011 and they haven't even sent it to us yet - if anyone has it, I'd love to see it! PM me and I'll give you my email.

First Aid for the USMLE

Pg. 9

T A B L E 1 . Passing Rates for the 2007–2008 USMLE Step 1.

.....................................2007 2008
...........................#tested %pass #tested %pass
Osteopathic 1st takers 1,411 82% 1,605 81%

---- This data is derived from all Osteopathic Schools. With that being said, it's possible that NYCOM's first time pass rate is even higher.

Congrats on almost being done!

Thanks for posting that bballdoc123, it is much appreciated!

NP. I saw the posts and thought... geez I remember reading this info. Just had to remember it was from First Aid. haha

I also recall the reason why people take the USMLE first. The student I spoke to said there is a lot of overlap between the two tests.

People study for the USMLE and take that first. Then they have a 2 week period where they cram OMT and take the comlex.

Anyone get accepted from the may 17th interview or any interviews near on that week? i am still waiting....=/

interviewed in mid march and I haven't heard back.

I am 4th year at NYCOM graduating this may. As far as USMLE goes take it when you feel you are ready to take it. If you feel that you are not ready to take USMLE take COMLEX and wait with USMLE. COMLEX is a requirement to move on 3rd year, USMLE is not. I liked USMLE better than COMLEX and I did much better on USMLE. I studied for USMLE first and 2 weeks after I took USMLE, I took COMLEX it worked out just fine.

I heared rumors about it but I never saw anything official on AOA website or PA AOA website.

Any word on waitlist movement?? Ive tried calling the admissions office but they dont seem willing to divulge any information. I keep praying that I get a phone call or letter or email saying that they accepted me off the waitlist. Guess I'll just have to wait and see...

I would assume there will be waitlist movement in the summer, maybe even starting as soon at May. But for now I think it is a little early for the waitlists.

Hang in there!! :xf:

Do you guys know when we can expect to receive information on financial aid?

Do you guys know when we can expect to receive information on financial aid?

Not for a long time. They at least wait until the class is filled/finalized, & even then they do financial aid for the other years before you guys. I remember I didn't hear anything last year until welllll into the summer

do acceptance/rejection letters come in the form of email or snail mail?

is everyone waiting for the financial aid packet to start their FAFSA? or are you guys gonna do your FAFSA before receiving the packet??

I would complete it ASAP. I got mine out of the way, as I'm sure lots of others did too. Also, make sure you add NYCOM's school code (we got it at the interview) and not NYIT's code.

oh so your supposed to do it and then get a packet right? thanks guys

Don't you have to do one to even receive a packet?

Which "packet" are you referring to? I assumed NYCOM would send out more stuff, but have no idea what. So far all I got was acceptance letter/intent of enrollment... then DPC and immunization forms. What comes next? Lol it's like a game, haha.

I got a snail mail letter last week about setting up your nycom email address that had to be done in 5 days- not sure why! Anyways its very exciting!

I would go ahead and fill out the FAFSA then just forget about financial aid. It will not happen, like christina said, until wayyy into the summer. I know it's nerve-racking but it's not gonna do you any good to worry so much about it. You'll get the loans you need.

Are there any more interview invites being sent out? I have been complete since September and haven't heard anything!! Is it over for me??
