I heard a rumor that NYCOM is going to change its name to New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic medicine, NYITCOM. Anyone else hear something to this effect?

Well that just seems more appropriate since NYCOM is a college of NYIT, my school doesn't call itself just DCOM...we are part of Lincoln Memorial university. I wouldn't necessarily call it a name change, it would be NYIT-NYCOM.

It doesn't flow as well though....and you'd have to remake all your tshirts. What a drag that'd be.

They've had other "unofficial" names before. We had a lecture from a guy who graduated in the inaugural class. They didn't have seperate facilities at first and pretty much did eveything in one lecture hall. They called themselves NYROM-- the New York Room of Osteopathic Medicine 🙂

I would be really really against this. "NYCOM" has a great track record and is a recognizable name amongst many students/physician and recognized by many PDs. Changing it to NYITCOM or whatever would be unnecessary and only cause unnecessary confusion. Why change a title thats been around since the school started 30+ years ago?

You are overreacting a bit, its how med schools are officially represented when the med school is part of an university. When you graduate with a degree from NYCOM, on your certificate it should have NYIT. Don't worry the school won't be off the map...

The president of NYIT has been freaking out for years about NYCOM leaving NYIT and going to greener pastures. After all, something ridiculous like 50% of our tuition goes to NYIT. He's done everything humanly possible to prevent that, including removing the NYCOM sign out infront of the entrance to campus. On tuition checks/applications we were always forced to write "New York College of Osteopathic Medicine at NYIT"

I really hope this doesn't come to pass.

The less we hear from NYIT the better. It was during my class' time there that the NYCOM sign was put out in front of the campus (it had been removed before for ??? reason but the student government managed to get it back) and I was annoyed to see that it had been removed yet again.

...NYITCOM, too close to NITWITCOM. I can see the jokes flying. NYIT is running NYCOM into the ground. NYCOM pulls in the majority of the money for NYIT, but sees a significantly smaller percentage of it. The administration of NYIT doesn't give a damn about NYCOM, and enjoys the cash cow on campus. They constantly hamstring the administration on spending, evidenced by the current state of the campus and facilities which aesthetically has deterioated over the last 6 years, and also noted by 70's decor and the dump of a building called a library. Also why NYCOM has probably one of the crappiest student to faculty ratio's in the nation - the majority of the faculty are volunteer because they won't spend the money on fulltimers.

NYIT is in a bit of a finacial crisis, which is why they sold off the adjacent property to the campus and are so desperately fighting to hold onto NYCOM. Hopefully NYCOM can weather the storm, but with Hofstra med opening up and eating up the North Shore system hospitals, the joke of a school "Touro - Harlem Campus" (the third Touro school - like a chain of pizzahuts) opening up in manhattan, and the large influx of carribean schools who pay top top dollar for their students to rotate in queens and brooklyn, NYCOM in 10 years may become obsolete anyway. Maybe we should change the name to ShouldHaveLeftNYITandJoinedHofstraWhenTheyOfferedCOM.

I know that this is a ridiculously old post but I thought I'd post since we got word today that as of Dec 5th, NYCOM will be changing it's name to NYIT-COM. Needless to say, most of the student body is not pleased by the news. Personally, I find it to be a sick joke.👎

And the downward spiral continues...🙁

Doesn't NYIT carry slightly more name recognition in the region? Also, doesn't a strong university affiliation give a school more credibility. Look at the new school at Hofstra, Hofstra LIJ . I can't think of a medical school that ignores the name of the parent university. In the future this could be a better move. I may just value the NYIT name because I work in IT and they produce great graduates. Also, I know many NYIT PA grads, which helps with name recognition as well.

NYIT makes me think of a trade school that's a wannabe MIT or CalTech. But then again I'm not from NY and I've never heard of NYIT.

NYIT is one of the more respected technology schools in NY. It is not a trade school like ITT tech, but a private engineering and technology school. It is not a wannabe MIT, but most states have an institute of technology in the same vein as MIT or Cal, just not as prestigious. If it was New York Tech rather than institute of technology I would understand the trade school comparison. Institutes of technology tend to be well known in engineering, architecture, and computer science circles.

It is top 50 in North regional colleges in US News, so it probably has far more name recognition in the Northeast.
All I know is my firm in silicon alley in Manhattan recruits NYIT big time and I have friends who were offered engineering jobs during junior year there. I never understood why NYCOM didn't want to use a name that is at least regionally established.

It must be a regional thing because I'm not from NY.

I've heard of MIT, CalTech, VA Tech, GA Tech, but never NYIT...

Yea its definitely not as widely known as GAtech, Virginia tech. Usually the schools on the US news regional listings are not widely known outside of their region. Also they have no D1 football, but the sports they have are D1.

As someone who has spent 5 years in branding, I wholeheartedly disagree.

I agree with your disagreement.

Take BIDMC for example. Not a terrible teaching hospital, but I think it's overrated due to its association as a Harvard teaching hospital located in the Longwood medical area right next to BWH, BCH, and DFCI.

Branding has a lot of influence, whether you like it or not.
