Alright I know some people are going to think this is a stupid question but entertain it please (and provide reasons for your answers!!)

I was accepted into NYCOM a few months ago and a few days ago received my acceptance to Rosalind Franklin (CMS)...NYCOM is a good if not great D.O. program in my area (I'm from New Jersey) and CMS is a school with a less than stellar reputation way outside of Chicago...
😕😕😕😕

Please give me any and all your opinions about where I should go, I have limited time to make a decision and would appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks!

If it were me I'd pick CMS, but one thing you might do is to call up residency directors in fields you're interested in and ask which would give you a better shot?

I say CMS, personally I loved it. It blew away NYCOM. There match list is impressive, their board scores are great, and you get to move to downtown chicago at then end of your second year. Plus its an MD, even though there is no difference between an MD and DO, it just makes it easier on people around you to understand. Plus those that are unfamiliar with DO's are not going to question your abilities since most are quite ignorant about the topic and dont realize the two degrees are the same damn thing.

I'm in a similar predicament & don't envy your choice, (UMDNJ-SOM (DO) & MSU-CHM (MD)) though I know what I would choose if I had your two choices. It's a tough call for you. (For me, UMDNJ is much less expensive than MSU, though!!) I think they will both be about as expensive for you. If you plan on returning to NJ, where the MD/DO ratio is pretty evenly split, the DO/MD difference probably won't be a huge issue for you.
Therefore, go where you feel you fit in the best.

I have no dog in this fight, but where have you heard this said about CMS?

Since you seem pretty comfortable with the differences between MD and DO schools (i.e., it is not the tipping factor for you), you should decide based on finances, maybe, or location / closeness to family...but don't assume out of hand that CMS is not a good school - everything I have read about it is positive.

I'd say go to NYCOM....but that's only cuz I'm on the "waitlist" at CMS

What would you do if you had my 2 choices?

And have you made the decision about whether you are going to go to UMDNJ or MSU?

That was part of the issue for me being that CMS is pretty far away...and as far as the differences between MD and DO, I have been hearing so many mixed messages about which is better/ok/the way to go that my head is spinning. Any thoughts?

For me, personally, I'd probably choose Rosalind, for a variety of reasons. 1) I've lived in New York for 21 years, so if I could go live in another city for a few years and experience life elsewhere, I think I'd take that oppurtunity. 2) If price is similar (I haven't looked at tuition of both), I'd probably rather have MD after my name. Why? I don't know; if I'm going to dump all that money into an education, and I can't find any other criteria to make a choice, I'll have to go with something somewhat superficial like the actual letters. I don't know how much I buy the stigma thing, especially in the tri-state area. We have a lot of DOs around here, and plenty of them in all specialties.

Just go with what you feel at this point, I guess. Good luck.

I can assure you, outside of SDN and the stories about how a pre-med's father's friend told him about how "nobody knows what a DO is," patients won't question your abilities because of the letters after your name.

Nobody is going to give you some kind of world-changing answer that will make you choose one over the other. I chose NYCOM over an MD school due to location, family, and matchlists. Both schools will get you where you want to go in the end, so it's a matter of if you want to learn OMM in addition to the basic sciences and live in new york, or live in chicago. The decision really isn't as hard as you're making it out to be. The last thing you want to do is listen to pre-meds' advice and their stories about what they've "heard." Your best bet is to talk to your family, maybe a couple of students at each school, and maybe even your family physician just to get a couple of valid opinions from people who know what they're talking about based on experience. Good luck.

I'm going to do a rare venture in on this pre-med thread. Honestly, school match lists, and school board scores mean nothing. What matters is your own performance.😱🙂

I don't know what I would do w/your 2 choices, since I haven't visited either school. They are 2 very good choices, though. It sounds like you would like to stay closer to home - is that a priority for you? If it is, then NYCOM is your answer. You just have to decide what is most important to you. You're going to be a doctor either way. Which do you see yourself fitting in more comfortably at? Your future options will not be limited at all graduating from either school.

(As for me, I haven't decided. I got accepted to MSU the morning after my mother died unexpectedly, and really can't even begin to figure out what I want to do right now.)

I have to be honest and say that before applying to med schools, I had never heard of DO before. I'm from Mass. If I was tied between two schools one MD one DO, I would go with the MD schools. This is not to say that I think MD is better, the holistic side of DO medicine really appeals to me and complements my spiritual beliefs. Ultimately though, I just think MD has more opportunities. I know I have a sense of pride when I work hard and put a lot of energy into my efforts, and the (very) superficial side of me would be kind of annoyed if someone stared at me blankly when I mentioned I was a DO. And yeah, it is a very small superficial point.

If you go to a region where DO is popular, it won't be an issue. Also, no matter what letters you have at the end of your name, you will still be a doctor...and you can get to where you want to be with either degree. You should ask yourself where you feel you will be happiest. Med school is hard enough, do yourself a small favor and go where you will be most content.

In the NY/NJ area, the MD to DO numbers are about 50/50, I've been told, so it's not a big deal if the OP wants to stay in NY at all.

One other thing I've done, OP, is spend some time lurking on the Class of ... thread & gotten a little idea of the potential classmates waiting for me. 😱
 Good luck - you have a good choice to make! :luck:

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom. That's all that is important now; get through your grief and then make a decision. I'm betting schools will understand and allow you to delay. God bless.

i think DOs have a slightly harder time getting non-primary care residencies... so if ure into something like surgery/rads/anes hit up nor-chi for two years
