From what I read this is the first year that NYCOM is doing a PBL program and 40 students were to be selected on a first come first serve. Anyone in the program or know people from the program care to comment on how things are going? Do things feel well organized? how were exams? How does the administration think things are going? Thanks!

I have a friend in the program and he appears to be enjoying it. It will take at least a few years though for board scores and other various objective performance markers to determine its success.

problem based learning

i am an MS I in the nycom PLB (aka DPC (doctor patient continuim)). to say that i am happy is an understatement! if you are into sitting in lecture for 8hours a day, listening to someone talk to you without being able to ask questions on the spot then PBL is not for you. BUT, if you want to work in small groups where you learn by reading, dialoging, problem solving, and hands on experience then consider the PBL. we haven't had any exams yet but if you want me to comment, i am really not at all worried about them. as for the boards, the profs that nycom brought in to set up the PLB curric have 10+ years experience setting up similar programs at other schools. i feel that this is proof that we have nothing to worry about other than our own ability.

my advice, don't worry about the program being in its infantcy, just apply to it. you won't regret it.

back to work!

I've heard... Thanks for that... I'm looking forward to him starting soon. I didn't know it was for sure.

NYCOM's PBL is starting out well and I'm very glad to be in it. They have put a significant amount of resources behind it. We also have full access to nearly all lectures via streaming over the internet. PBL is not for everybody but it is for me.

Hopefully our COMLEX scores will be comparable to Ohio's.

No, not everyone will get in to PBL. There are still a few 8 hr days but you can stream most lectures over the internet. It's a great resource.
