there has been word that there will no longer be a make-up policy for exams for the new incoming class. given that nycom currently has a high attrition rate, what do you think will happen? any thoughts?

Dean Scandalis told us they are considering this, as per statistics, the number of retakes students take is the best indicator for failing the COMLEX step 1 on the first try. BTW, all the rumors about NYCOM having a 70% first try pass rate this year on step 1 are false rumors. The dean spoke to us and told us we are right around the national average; however, they want to increase the first try pass rate even more. Right now a few students are demo testing a program called K-bit(unsure of spelling) which supposedly show a 5% increase in 1st try pass rate at minimum. It is true that St. Vincent's in Manhattan may be shut down soon; however, there is something in the works that is so big it may push NYCOM right to the top of the osteopathic world. It's not definite yet, so I don't want to say what it is, but if what they are trying to push for now comes true, it will be HUGE and very exciting! The bottom line is NYCOM is a good school and is constantly trying to improve.

See, I don't understand where this high attrition rate thing comes from. According to the faculty I talked to, we graduate more than 95% of the incoming class; maybe they're referring to just the non-FMGs? It was interesting to note in our Dean's talk to us the other day that he indicated in NYCOM's statistical analyses, they parse out FMGs and BA-DO students (7 yr kids). If there is a high attrition rate, I'd like to attribute it to the foreigners. 😛

Dr. Ray up there 🙂 is too superstitious, so I'll just come out and say it. NYCOM is working on a deal to have it's own university hospital. Should this deal come through, in many peoples eyes it would vault NYCOM above other osteopathic institutions and some allopathic ones as well. Given Touro's recent opening and St. Vincent's closure, it would appear to be a wise decision in the event that any of our clerkships are threatened. NYCOMEC is what NYCOM is famous for, and this would just add to the great strength we already have in clerkships. As for the feasibility of this deal coming through, Nassau County Hospital has indicated they want us. We clearly want them. So we'll see if the money and details can be worked out.

WOW! Very cool! That would be amazing if that happened.😀

Ya let the cat out of the bag! 😱 This is what I was talking about above. This would be HUGE for NYCOM.

Wow, that would be great!! When were these talks by Dr. Scandalis though?? I didn't hear anything about them and would have gone if I knew.

Getting our own hospital would be rather sweet. Is this a home institution for Stony Brook as well?

I don't know the whole story on the retake policy but there should be another way to address the COMLEX pass rate for people that are your students. Based on the proposed policy we would have lost a good number of our sudents already since you can only take 1 summer class.

Dean Scandalis addressed us for the better part of our class meeting, which was on wednesday at 12pm. I encourage everyone to attend class meetings - we get to bring up issues that we are concerned about and hear what the school is doing about them; plus we get free food (so far usually pizza, pasta, bread and zeppoles). Dr. Scandalis gave a speech for about 20 min or so, then opened it up to questions/answers, during which he addressed - Nassua Univeristy Health Center becoming our possible Hospital(he mentioned things like this would mean our faculty clinicians would work there and teach us, increased rotations, residencies, etc.), complaints about lectures by the Neuro fellows, Kbit, doing away with retakes, losing St. Vincent's, and the possible closure/merger of Peninsula hospital and Wyckoff Heights. Needless to say it was a very informative meeting.

if the new no retake policy is enacted, would one be able to make up a failed class or be dismissed afterwards?

You can retake one class in the summer, but if u fail more than one then your out. I'm worried about this no retake policy, especially with OMM being very subjective. I think there are better ways to up the Comlex rate, such as having test questions similar to the ones on Comlex rather than simple or irrelevant questions you'll never be asked again in your life. Also if they make it a no retake they should have more than one exam for a system, making it more like a regular class rather than do or die.

That would be sweet. And hopefullt, then this means that maybe next time I end up at their ER, they would x-ray the right ankle. I went to the ED after I fell down the stairs and my ankle was all swollen adn I couldn't walk, and some people smarter than me thought I may have broken it, that's how nasty it looked. Anyway, I go to the ED, and I say it's my right ankle that I hurt. So I get treated by a student. First, the student looks at my left ankle, and I figure it's to compare to the normal? But then she walks away, and I'm like, um hello? What about looking at the swollen, bruised, twisted looking ankle? So then she says I thought it was your left ankle that was the problem 🙄 So then she looks at my right ankle, adn I get sent off for x-rays. The x-ray tech watned to xray my left ankle, and again, I said no, it's my right ankle. On my discharge papers, it said mild left ankle sprain.

I went to my own orthopedist a week later, and told him what they said, and he basically just laughed out loud. Turns out it wasn't even a mild right ankle sprain. I actually had a grade 3 ankle sprain. Thanks a lot for nothing.

But that's just my own bad experience. Not sure how other people's visits were. Although if my experience is similar to other people's, then maybe NYCOM can improve the situation there. Or at least hopefully the med students admitted to NYCOM will know the difference between right and left.

So any idea as to when this might all go down? Will it be set up in time for us to take use of it?

did he speak of the amount of exams for next years incoming class or about whether the retake policy will remain the same? I know they arent yet set on the exact curriculum when I asked them about it, I was wondering if maybe he mentioned more? 🙂
