I was thinking about locations where I'd like to go to school and came across NYCOM. How is this school? I guess by that I mean how is the surrounding area (will I need a car?), is it friendly to oos, and how far away is it from the big city of NY? The last one is probably most important to me because my SO can transfer to work at her company's NYC campus.

Not very oos friendly but it's definitely possible. Most are from the tri-state area. You'll need a car, absolutely. It's about a 25 minute commute for me to get to nycom and I live in queens. My husband works in the city so it's the perfect location for us. There's a nycom thread in the school-specific forum, you should check it out for more info.

If you go to NYCOM, you will definitely need a car. NYCOM is about an hour to an hour and a half (if there's bad traffic) away from the city (by "city" I mean Manhattan). Alternatively, you can take the LIRR train to the city and back, which would take less time. As for OOS preference, I heard that about 35% of students are OOS...so I'd say that's pretty friendly in my book.

And I agree; you should search around for NYCOM threads and read all the info in there.

Thanks for the replies, I'll definitely take a look at the thread.

Yeah, its Long Island so you'll definitely need a car. Very suburban and spaced out. There is MTA Nassau but does anyone really use that? Good area, but I can't imagine ever living in Old Westbury, especially as a student. I think most people live in surrounding town in LI.

I like how their admissions website says commuting from Queens/Brooklyn can be exciting lol. That isn't my definition of exciting haha. I'd probably end up being a commuter if I went there, but that just sounds so annoying - I haven't had an hour commute since having to take bus & subway to get to HS.

Actually, they aren't very OOS friendly. I have stats from USNEWS that says they accept less than 2% of OOS applicants.

And BTW, you will probably need a car, but don't forget, you aren't in the boondocks either. Most people who have never been to LI think it's rural because it is away from NYC. That couldn't be further from the truth. The only rural place on LI is parts of Suffolk. There is still PLENTY public transportation in Nassau, parts of Suffolk, etc. FAR from rural.

I don't think that's true at all. Can you show us the source?

Whoa, that's pretty low. I guess I'll just apply and see what happens.

If it's not true, you can blame USNEWS...but I got it directly from the book, "USNEWS - Best Graduate Schools" or some title similar to that (don't have the book in front of me).

I even took a picture of the page where it said that, because someone else thought it was absurd too (sorry it's blurry, but you can see at the bottom where it says "Admissions" Out of State Acceptance Rate - 1.9%)

So instate preference is 55% and out of state is 1.9%? Uh, what about the other 43.1%?

OP, something that you might want to keep in mind is cost...tuition is higher and cost of livig is definitely higher. I'm originally from LI and though I would love to move back, finances are a major reason why I haven't been able to yet.

That is not to say that next year when it is time for me to apply to med school, I'll not apply to NYCOM...it will defintely be one of the schools I will apply to.

Those are just the percentages of acceptance rates of ISS and OSS at NYCOM. So they're not going to add up to 100. What will add up to 100% is the breakdown of ISS and OSS of the matriculating class.

I wonder how many applicants from oos apply to NYCOM.

I find it very hard to believe that that's the acceptance rate for OOS students. I know one of my roommates applied from virginia...guess he got lucky, haha.
