Does NYCOM expect applicants to send their letters of recommendation with the primary application or do they prefer that applicants send their letters once they are offered an interview?

Thank you!

PH

In fact, I called them and asked them and they said they won't even open the LOR's until an applicant is offered an interview. At that time, they will send you a supplementary and then you send them LOR's. They told me NOT to send in LOR's pre-interview-offer because that will show incompetance on the applicants part for not following directions

d'oh! i already sent mine in. i even called them, and they said they got them, and that they'd be sending me a letter very soon.

i wonder if it's the "you're such an idiot-rejected!" letter.

That's interesting....I called them a while ago on this and they told me to send my letters, meaning it was perfectly okay. Oh well--not like it matters to me now. 🙄 Overall, that office seemed to be the least helpful/polite anyway of the schools I applied to.

i also called nycom today to check on if a decision had been made and once again they said that they're reviewing it now. but, she asked me if i had sent in my letters, and i said my school did but i wasnt sure if nycom had gotten them. she checked and said i was complete - so i think u should have them in. it's ******ed for being penalized for sending them in early bc some undergrad school's send out the letters to all the schools that are applied to by the applicant.

also, does anyone know of nycom not sending out rejection letters bc i waiting for their response to make a decision. thanks!

hmm...that is very odd...I wish i had recorded the ladie's name that I talked to....because she was being pretty rude too....i asked her in the nicest way....ok...so now my question is....does sending in LOR's affect their prelimenary decision in any way? so how would they review an applicant's application to get an interview if some people sent in their LOR's and some people didn't? so i guess that means the appicants that sent in their LOR's have an advantage...isn't that unfair on NYCOM's part for not being specific?

I received a letter from NYCOM stating that they had received my preliminary application. It also mentioned that "Candidates selected for an interview will receive a supplemental application." Nothing was noted about recommendation letters. Strange, huh?

Maybe if they organized their website, and provided a detailed list of their requirements and approximate timeline, then their secretaries wouldn't have to deal with 10,000+ people harassing them with questions? Wouldn't that make this whole process a little less frustrating for both parties?

My experience with NYCOM's phone etiquitte was very similar. I called because I was concerned that I did not recieve a secondary(at the time I was unaware that they did'nt send them unless you got an interview), I politley stated that I have not recieved a secondary and was concerned because I was very interested in their program...She very rudely said "Well...we dont just give secondaries to everybody!" and hung up! I couldnt believe it. Needless to say I was pretty shocked! You gotta love this admissions game!

I'm not making excuses for rudeness at all, but you need to understand that the admissions department has hundreds of calls every day asking the same questions over and over. If whoever answered the phone was "rude", I'm sure the rudeness wasn't personally directed at you...it was most likely a response to frustration. It's really difficult for the admissions staff to send out invitations for interviews and acceptance letters if they have to stop what they're doing every five minutes to pick up the phone and answer questions. I will tell you from personal experience that the ladies who work in the admissions department are some of the nicest people around.

I understand you guys want to get you questions answered right away, and I know that this is a very important time for you....I went through this also not too long ago! Just try to have some patience and understanding.

As far as LORs go - when I applied I sent in my letters prior to my interview invitation that way they had my complete file to be discussed with me at my interview. I don't know if they've changed the protocol or what, but it makes more sense to have your stuff in so that the admissions dept can get a better picture of who you are as a person. Just my two cents though!

Good luck to all of you applying. Hopefully we'll see you on campus!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

What is NYCOM's requirement for LORs?? do we have to submit 3 science letters if we dont get a committee letter or is it 2 science letters? Thanks

When I applied, I had 1non-science, 2 science and 1 pre-med committee LOR. I'm not sure what the exact requirements are, but these are ther letters I used for all of the schools I applied to.

You think the admissions office is bad, wait until your accepted and have to deal with the financial aid office....woooo doggy. kidding, but seriously madmax is right, I think we only have 2 people who run the admissions office and they understandably get very stressed out this time of year. Either way I apologize and hope that it does not reflect poorly on the school. It kind of sucks that the face nycom shows to the majority of applicants is a cruddy one. (i.e. the webpage my 10 year old cousin could have made, and the occasional unhelpful if not plain destructive phone call conversation) But I think thats about to change we are in the process of setting up a student run committee responsible for "PR", so we'll see how that goes.

I have just one suggestion for all of you. Please bear with the application process. It stinks but its just one of those steps on the way to becoming a doctor, and if you are invited for an interview I strongly urge you to accept it. I am absolute loving NYCOM, and I think that the only way you can get to know and get an appreciation for this school is when you come to visit.

Oh and to address the original question. I sent in my LOR?s way before being invited for an interview, I don?t think theres anything wrong w/ that. In fact I personally would suggest it.

Ok, my question is this......you have 2 applicants

applicant 1 and applicant 2 have the same gpa/mcat/ec/same quality personal statement/same school....you get the point now....

the only difference is that applicant 1 sent in his LOR's and applicant 2 did now

now...would the adcom even look at the applicant 2's LOR in making a decision to invite him/her to a interview? or they just complete ignore it....until the make a decision to invite him/her to an interiview and then look at it after the interview and when they finally do sent their supplementary in??

Must send in recommendations now. The sooner your application is complete, the easier it is for them to decide on whether or not you will get an interview. Plus, it doesn't hurt to send them your recommendations more than once if you aren't sure. However, they still offer interviews to applicants who don't send in their DO recommendations. At the interview, you can check personally with the director to see if your application package is completed or not.

On a side note, the receptionist over the phones may not sound nice, but in person, everyone working there is very nice. I had the same impression when I first called to check on my recommendation status and was suprised when I met them in person.

However, Lions Pride is right... the lady working at the financial aid is .. oooohhhh.... watch out.. she was rude to my friend and I, and many others that I have spoken with. But that doesn't compare to the test proctors at the anatomy written exams. heh..

I received interview invitation some time ago, along with a secondary application. Instruction is specific that they MUST have your LOR in before the interview. I even had to schedule it late, just to make sure they receive my letters.

I am to call them and make sure they have my LOR before the day of interview... there's nothing wrong with LOR going in early. If they give you problem, tell them that B]metabolite[/B]from SDN said it's okay 😀

anyone know the exact requirement for LOR's for NYCOM?? since i wont be getting a premed committee letter, how many science LOR's do we need? thanks

maybe i have to rephrase my question.....does having your LOR's in or not having them in influence their decision in inviting you for an interview?

I understand that maybe you will have to have them in before an interview...but im talking about a pre-interview-decision.....does a LOR affect that?

Sorry WstSdDesi, I think I'm dislexic.

No, their decision to invite you for interview is made regardless of the LOR. I know because both of my pre-med committee letter and DO letter went out after I made the arrnagement for interview.

Now I'm wondering if I read questions on the secondaries correctly... hmm. Maybe this is why I haven't gotten interviews from schools I sent secondaries to?

hehe...no problem metabolite....i thought i may have been confusing...and now reading my questions..i think i was...im sorry

Well, I finally worked up the nerve to call the admissions office and I can now understand what everyone has been griping about. First I got the sigh and the reluctant, "Okay, what your name?" But then the interesting thing happened. She started to be very friendly to me. I wasn't told of any letter inviting me to an interview or anything, but the tone of the conversation changed very quickly upon her opening my file. Whatever. It's probably just my demented mind working overtime hoping I'll hear something from somewhere sometime about anything. Oh well. I've got to get busy waiting on tomorrow's mail.

I don't know if I've just happened to catch them at good times or what, but they haven't been rude either time that I've called. I did get put on hold while scheduling the interview, with that annoying music, but that was about as unpleasant as it got. They were even nicer when I called to confirm the date (just being ocd, thought I'd written down the wrong date), I didn't get the sense that they felt "bothered" by me at all. Hey, if they accept me, I really won't care about their manners too much. 🙂

Glad to hear some positive feedback!
Good luck on your interview! If you have any questions, let me know!
