I got into NYCPM and have been looking at the housing. I was hoping to get some more recent views on the student housing the school provides.

I'm currently signed up for Parkchester, but its in the Bronx. My parents are freaking out about that since I am a single female, etc..... Does anyone know what the area is like up there? (I would go look myself but im in Texas)

Or should I just consider going to Draper Hall. Sharing bathrooms reminds me of my crappy college years, bleh.

Any insight would be wonderful. Thanks in advance!

I am in the same boat. I do not want to live in Draper Hall...my days of sharing community bathrooms have long been retired! I'm looking for housing outside of Manhattan...like New Rochelle.

I never lived at Parkchester but stayed for a few nights with a buddy who was doing the pre-matriculation program. Seemed like a pretty decent area and we were out very late in the morning. The apartments were fully furnished and quite large, especially by new york standards. There's an express train to 125th street

I never visited draper but the main plus seems to be the location (it's in Manhattan). And there was/is a shuttle as well.

Isn't there a nice student place right by the school? I saw some pics and its luxury apartments.

they have a new housing option at 126-127 and Adam Clayton BLVD in harlem about 3-4 blocks from the school. it is mentioned w/ a website on a thread - do a search. the apts seem really nice and brand new.

I wouldn't live in draper if they paid me.

good luck.

And parchester isn't bad either. Crime happens all over NYC not just in the bronx.

if u are worried about the area u should "google map stalk" the area by looking at the walking route to the campus.

that gated lot in the pic is where the building now stands.

To the OP: its NYC... bad things happen if u decide to walk home with ur head down and ipod headbuds in ur ear. just dont be stupid and make urself an easy target. this new dorm is pricey but its got security cameras on the premise and will have a doorman. also the floorplans on the website above do NOT represent what is actually offered since NYCPM will turn the 2 bedrooms into 3 and the 3 bedrooms into 4.

If you are a single female, take my advice and look for something in Astoria...M60 Bus goes all the way on Astoria Blvd and it is less than 20 mins ride and the bus stop is rite across the street from NYCPM. Astoria is very safe and has all you need (cheap grocery, entertainment, restaurants, ....) The important thing, it is very safe there and you would not have to worry about any of the "bad things" that happen in NYC as they say. You can look it up in craigs list and search for astoria. Studio is around 800, 1 br is around 1100-1200 and 2 br is 1400-1600. Many sharing offers are there too for 500-700 for ur own room.

Take my advice as a new yorker and listen to the previous post, keep ur head up, open ur eyes and walk as confident as you have lived in the city for the past 20 years and you will be fine :)

I lived in Astoria for a year and the south bronx for the rest. Felt perfectly safe in both places, maybe more so in south bronx. There were always people around and outside in so bro. late at night in Astoria it can be a bit desolate (sp?).

Getting home to queens late at night sucks. Not all trains are running and the ones that are have maybe one other person on them. Empty trains scare me. Even though astoria is pretty close to Manhattan it is not close to Harlem. The commute takes forever. I hate commuting and definitely preferred a one train/bus ride to school. transferring sucks.

Just IMO.

i live in parkchester, and i am a young (right out of undergrad) woman and i have never felt unsafe. i know how you feel, my parents were freaking out too, but believe me, its not the same as your picture of what "the bronx" looks like. parkchester is its own shopping district within the bronx, so its VERY different. there are trees (!!!) and sidewalks and a huge fountain in the center, an awesome diner, an uno, a movie theater thats actually very well taken care of, its OWN security and police, right there in the middle. like someone else said, its on the express track for the 6 train, so it literally only takes me like a half hour to get to school (including walking to the subway and then to the school...), and my apartment is huge compared to what i was stuck with in undergrad, and all of my neighbors are actually a lot older so its a very nice setting to live in. the grocery stores there have free delivery, so you dont have to lug all of your groceries all the way back home... i honestly really, really like it. i definitely recommend it and if you have any questions PLEASE message me.

NYU and NYCPM are two separate things. NYU is about 100 blocks from NYCPM.

Dafina didn't work out, and is not an option anymore.

They have cleaned up the area a lot, it's not as bad as its reputation. I will probably be living in that area. Also you can get a security guard to escort you to the bus stop from the school.
