Can I do ankle surgeries by graduating from NYCPM? I know that NYCPM does not stress the ankle during clinical work, but I heard that i can gain experience from residency. Is this true?

NY law doesn't allow DPMs to treat the ankle, so you won't see any ankle injuries, surgery, etc in the NY clinics if you go to pod school there. The school has busy clinics, but it's largely routine work (nail care, wound care, etc).

You can go anywhere you want (and can get accepted to) for your residency training. If you did a residency in NY, you'd have to learn your rearfoot with ortho, though.

You could do a 3 (or even 4 year) PM and S residency in NY. Pod attendings will teach forefoot/rearfoot while ortho surgeons will do ankle cases with you. Just realize, you will not do ANY ankle surgery if you decide to practice in NY.

Funny scenario, I know pods who have practices in NY and PA (state line). They treat foot problems at NY clinic then drive less than 10 miles south to Penn clinics/hospitals to do foot and ankle surgery (and treat soft tissue of lower leg). Am I crazy or does this sound F**king ******ed? Just ridiculous politics.

I talked to some people on NYSPMA, and they seem to say we are actually "overtraining" podiatrists who do residency in new york. Meaning, they cannot even practice what they learn (during residency). We are training residents here and then sending them off to other states if they feel the scope of practice is too limited. Furthermore, at NYCPM, you cannot even touch the ankle during clinic or hospital based clinics (under DPM attendings). You learn the textbook information but only do ankle work if you do externships outside of NY (jersey, VT, MASS, etc). NY used to provide only 3 externships, I think its now 3.5 or 4. Depending on GPA, you can do 2 month senior surgery at West Penn or UMDNJ which is definitely a good thing I feel (more exposure)

New York has one of the worst scopes of practice in America (and definitely the northeast). The state congressmen have been trying to get ankle and soft tissue to knee in the scope the past few years but nothing yet. We will see what happens though. I sent letters and e-mails to senators and assemblymen so doing my part I guess.

Just to note, MASS and CT used to have a similar scope of practice to NY. However, they passed laws like 2 years ago and now pods have ankle privilages.
