NYCPM vs Temple (providing info and need some)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When I visited Temple, I remember a 3rd year saying they had 5 too. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You have 5 at Temple, but that's a little deceiving. There are four clinic schedules for your 4th year based off a lottery, and only one schedule allows for 5 externships before January (when interviews are). The other 3 schedules will only allow 4, unless you take a 5th one during January which is not a full externship anyway due to time off for boards (1st week of January) and then interviews being mid January.

Does TUSPM have a good gym? (NYCPM is terrible)

I do not think the TUSPM campus had a gym, if it did it really sucked as I do not remember it if there was one. How ever you can use the gym at the main campus which I am betting is nice, but obviously you would not be able to slip in a workout on your lunch break. I know the main campus is not that far, it was a foggy day when I was there but the tour guide was pointing to a few buildings that she said were the main campus. Finally though to consider the main campus is in a bad area, so if you are the type that likes to work out in the evening....

the main campus gym is very nice (i went to temple for undergrad and will go to tuspm in the fall). the main campus is in a bad area but it isn't that bad. the area is improving each year. the podiatry campus does have a gym but it is very small. tuspm is in center city and is near many restaurants and bars. however, transportation system in philly is very limited. we only have 2 subway lines that runs along broad st and market st. we do have buses and trolleys, but i advise that you don't take them unless you really have to. so if you don't live near center city, unless you have a car, getting to places may be difficult.

Both are cities with a high populous that offer a large nightlife variety.

Please don't pick any professional school based off the clubs, bars and strip joints around it though.

Seriously, though...comparing NYCPM to TUSPM...very tough choice since on paper they seem very similar. So, if you can attend one school for less, I would pick that school every time.

Now, I'm all about being objective, rationale, and considering the logistics of each, but all things being equal, I would think the best choice would boil down to 'fit'.

This was a tough choice for me as well. Let me share with you my impressions.

*** Disclaimer: the follow statements are opinions NOT facts ***

Academics: Temple > NYCPM (by the slimmest of margins)
* This really comes down to do you want a school that is trying to clean up its act (NYCPM) or a school with a good track record that is trying to sort through being part of "Temple U".
* Both have decent pass rates NYCPM 100%, Temple 88% **although those numbers flip around year to year**
* Both use video capture (temple claims it was the 1st), both offer tutoring for students
* Temple has a larger on sight Library + computer, NYCPM requires lab top and has online periodicals (offers life time membership).
* Temple has a shoe museum
* Both have decent affiliations
* Both offer MPH (NYCPM) I think academically holds slightly more name recognition
* Temple used to offer a Ph.D. program for those interested.
* Both have walk in clinics, Temple seems to have more equipment.

Student Life NYCPM = Temple
* Both are in cities
* NY is larger, supposedly safer
* Cost of living in NY > Phili
* Its a city both have bars, clubs, and other night life attractions NY will probably have more.
*NYCPM Hermitage -> large appartment complex that you have to share (2-5 per unit). Looks over central park (very pretty...if that's the side your facing). Nearby grocery store.
* Temple offers on campus housing, cheaper rate. Rooms are pretty barren. Location is good. Get to either look at China Town or the Police Station.

Facilities Temple > NYCPM
* NYCPM is a big fan of everything online, Temple is a mix
* Temple has more/newer equipment, much larger and better foot gate lab
* Both have gyms* Temple though does offer access to undergrad facilities, while NYCPM offers private membership to local gyms. The equipment at every gym looks old. But then again if your lifting weights how new does it have to be?
* NYCPM building is not as pretty (but beauty is in the eye of the beholder)
* NYCPM offers a cafeteria , Temple does not (unless you count the street vendor outside)

Side notes...
Temple Podiatry is not happy with its last Board Pass rate and will be pushing hard to get the number to the high 90s.
NYCPM - I heard has some issues come up with 3rd/4th years. School apparently limits or keeps tabs where you try to go. ** A student could better clarify this**
The northeast is supposedly a "less than ideal place" for aspiring podiatrists looking to make a good living (due to over supply). I remember during my shadowing experience. "Go south, go west, go to Canada, go anywhere but NY/New England" Just some food for thought.

Btw...for all those interested in "the night life". Lets be frank....

1) You are there to study not party...partying leads to poor grades.
2) These are cities...there are unwritten curfews (aka you don't want to be wandering Harlem at 2 am in the morning, same with Phili)
3) Ny will have more lights and glitz, however you better have the dough to back that up if that's your life style.
4) Also are you prepared to be a New Yorker? Loud, in your face, rude, with a mean/determined look on your face 24/7. That's what it takes to live in NY. I've lived in NYC for a while, you have to have street smarts and know how to look tough (or crazy 🙂 ) ... end of story.

what part of NYC was that again...East NY/Brownsville?

1. As much as I would truly love to live in NY, that is sort of a worry, a lot of quality distractions and things to poke holes in the wallet.
2. Having gone to undergrad in a sketchy area of chicago I agree, there are just certain areas you do not go to after hours. I will say though around NYCPM, it is still not that bad, there is worse in Harlem
3. Agreed there. In Chicago going out it is not hard to drop 70-100 in a night, NY would be the same or worse.
4. Actually this is a positive. Would remind me of Chicago's surly side.

This is absolutely not true. You can do your externships wherever you want. You can go to residency wherever you're hired. The school DOES NOT limit where you go. Sure, we have a bunch of students who are staying in the area... but we also have students going to Florida, California, etc.
