Hello everyone I just had a question about NYSPM, can you normally get a spot in student housing pretty easy? Also do you think anyone would know if you applied to both DPM and DDS? I also saw you can use your DAT instead of MCAT for "special circumstances" what would those be?

I applied this last cycle with my DAT and it was fine. I think by special circumstances they mean you did well on it. Also, I'm almost positive that you are guaranteed student housing. You may not get your first choice of housing but they will find you something. Also, I think they are trying to get most of the incoming freshman to live here.

Student housing?? This is the first school i've heard of that offers student housing to grad students. What housing options are there at nycpm? What areas of ny?

When I say student housing I mean they help students find housing. They aren't dorms or "student only" housing but just apartments around the city. The college sponsored housing options are the link I posted(110th &5th ave), 124th &3rd, and Parkchester in the bronx.

TUSPM in Philadelphia has an apartment complex dedicated to its Podiatry students only. I lived there for 2 years. It was nice being 50 feet from the academic building and school clinic.

NYSPM is not the same as NYCPM. NYCPM does not have a dental school.

Special circumstances would probably be if you took the DAT and not the MCAT haha.

If you apply early, you will probably get student housing. By early I mean before May.

Definitely helps keep travel light

So can someone who currently attends NYCPM answer my question: What is the advantage of the January class which is 4.5 years long? From their website I can see that the curriculum is different for Jan and Sept classes. Is the Jan class for students with lower stats or it's less competitive to be accepted to? Thanks 🙂

The January class takes less courses at a time so the curriculum is more spread out. The advantage is more time devote to your classes and as such the January class tends to have a higher GPA than the September class. I don't believe there are different applicant criteria for Jan vs Sept class; just whichever the student is interested in.

So can anyone give me the deadlines for applying to the cycle starting in spring? I have already taken the MCAT and my application is almost done, just need my LORs and personal statement. Is it already to late to apply to that cycle? What would be the latest date i could apply and still get accepted?

When is the application deadline?
NYCPM offers two (2) start dates, January and September. The application deadline for entrance in January is November 30th and the deadline for entrance in September is June 30th.

for NYCPM do you need letter of rec from podiatrist or can I just get it from my professors?

3. All candidates must have obtained three letters of recommendation or pre-health committee evaluation.

It does not say a letter from a Podiatrist is required. However, I strongly suggest it, and it is not hard to obtain if you shadow a Podiatrist. Shadowing is something you really should do.

Barry website doesn't mention about letter from podiatrist but when I called them they told me letter from podiatrist is required.. Im like wth? I hope NYCPM doesn't.

You don't need a letter from a podiatrist, just the three letters. Of course, a letter from a doctor helps your application.

I didn't shadow podiatrist.... what other podiatry school don't require podiatrist LOR?

Doesn't really matter if Californian knows what he/she wants...as long as there is a program who will take students regardless of shadowing and a LOR

Honestly, I do not know of any schools that will allow you admittance without shadowing experience. Its pretty important. I got hassled by two of the schools admissions committee during interviews for only having 50 hours of shadowing. Get some hours in.

You will not make it through pod school being lazy.

Where on the application does it say the number of hours you shadowed? I see any reason to disclose the number of hours. If you decided you wanted to do this after 1 day of shadowing and got a letter from a pod, then who cares? This may be an extreme example, but still. Thats like people bringing up something dumb they did in undergrad in the personal statement. If they want to know about it, they will specifically ask. Otherwise, shut up and hammer home the positives.

I believe it asks in the application how many hours you shadowed and who you shadowed... actually im positive of it. We applied different years. Maybe last years application was different than yours?

apparently so. I am glad they ask, dont get me wrong. But if they dont ask, dont tell.
