NYMC Acceptances?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

I highly doubt u are interviewing for a WL spot. Last year people interviewed this late and were accepted. Not to mention the fact they have already gone to their WL and its only April. Last year they didnt get to it until June. I think you would have a good shot of getting in if you went but thats my opinion.

How does NYMC's acceptance numbers compare to other school? It seems like alot of people got accepted there. Is this one of the school where if you get a interview, you have a good shot of getting accepted?

Also, I have a friend who has an interview there coming up, whats the best way to get there from Philly/South NJ area? Mapquest says washington bridge in upper manhattan but someone else suggested to my friend (who doesn't use SDN, hence why i'm asking for her) to use garden state parkway and tappan bridge? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I believe 50% or so of interviewees get accepted, which is higher than most other schools. If remember correctly they also accept about 4 times the size of the class (which is already large) since only a quarter or so will accept, but I may totally incorrect about that statistic.

They accept like 600 for a 185 spots according to USNEWS/

Do you know how many people applied? Thanks.
8900 applied, 1310 interviewed, 650 accepted

That is a lot of acceptances. I hope I am lucky enough there. Am I at a disadvantage intervewing in early May?
I think its actually to your advantage.

Just to restate for all you late interviewiees, if you're being interviewed there are open spots in the class. 2 of my 3 roomates interviewed in May and were accept without WL. My advice, go in, do your best, and if you like it send in a letter. Best of luck

Why does NYMC need to accept 4 times the size of the class to fill it? I also heard something like half of the class was from the alternate. It seems like a good schools to me (judging from the match). Why do people put it down and opt for other schools?

One word: cost

Bob, since you gave us some stats from USNews before, I was wondering if you might have stats for OOS applicants (# int, accepted, enrolled)?

I got the USNews magazine from last year, but cannot find the info.

Thanks!

Nas -

these are the numbers I have
applications/interviewed/accepted/matriculated
Total: 8900 1310 682 185
OOS : 6742 970 506 162

These might be 2004 though. I am not sure, I got a list of schools I applied to with US NEWS stats from someone else.

- I think NYMC has alot to offer. Westchester Medical Center is a 1000 bed hospital with many cutting edge programs. Their new children's hopsital is top notch. Research is def not a powerhouse but when its compared to other schools mentioned in the same sentence as NYMC (CMS, Drexel, etC) they have a decent amount (45 million worth). They also have a decent science graduate school with almost 200 students. There are hospitals in NYC where you can do your 3rd and 4th year if you choose. Obviously the curriculum must be set up well otherwise they would not do as well as they do on the boards. I like how there is little lecture time during second year and most of it is group sessions, clinical cases, labs, or self-learning. The facilities including the anatamy lab are all very nice. They have 19 places to do rotations at and Weschester is a huge teaching hospital, I didnt realize how large it is (1000 beds) is pretty big. Good match list.

cons in my opinion -

cost : 61,000 budget this year. They dont have much grant/scholarship money so 99% of people probably wouldnt choose NYMC over their state schools. Its just no cost effective.

Curriculum: surprisingly one of the things that gives NYMC its strength is also a weakness. the school works it students alot harder than others, especially those where the first 2 yrs are P/F. This results in great board scores but an ulcer during the first 2 years.

Rotation consistency: in reading the hand book they said how they were working on making rotations between all sites consistenly graded. Obviously a problem since you have so many sites, so many different residents/attendings, that grading may differ alot between places. Since 3rd year counts alot that could be a problem. The book is a little older so they may have corrected it by now , not sure.

No elective room 3rd year to try stuff out before picking something to apply for in residency? Thats how it seemed to me anyway. Not sure, perhaps Boyz of 4 or another NYMC'r can clear that up.

I dont really consider living in Valhalla a negative because its so close to NYC that you could go anytime you really want to. White Plains the next town over does have some stuff to do and its not really that bad. I would rather live in a location like this than Suny-D, Penn state, or Syracuse (Just to name a few)anyway. you can always live in the city if you want and commute (1/2 hr) or move there for the last 2 years.

Another con is the school does not sell itself. They lose alot of applicants because of this. Alot of ignorance, such as on SDN, comes from this. The websit could be better, they could provide a view book showing what the school has to offer at interview day, etc. Perhaps letting students on the admisisons committee or making them have more say would fix this.

Just my thoughts....

I'm a 4th year at NY Med and when I interviewed in mid-April 4 years ago, I was accepted 8 weeks later. You've got nothing to lose by going to the interview especially if you haven't been accepted elsewhere or are waitlisted. If you've already been accepted somewhere else and have no interest in NY Med then there's no point in going to the interview. As of 2 weeks ago the 2010 class was not full.

You can postpone either your peds, family med or neurology rotation if its toward the end of 3 year to early 4th year so you can do an elective at the end of third year. Its usually done by people interested in neurosurg, optho or for a research rotation.

Today I had the distinction of joining the waitlist club. Not exactly my favorite club to be a part of, but it's better than being rejected. I also have the distinction of now being a two-time member of this club at NYMC. Just a couple questions -

How much movement do we usually see from NYMC on the waitlist?

Does anyone get rejected post-interview?

Letters of intent - is that basically me saying how much I want to go to the school and how it's a good fit? Updates as to what I've done - would being involved with new projects at work be worthy of mention?

Would being a two-time waitlister effect me at all - either positive or negative?

I guess that was more than a couple - sorry for that! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Has anyone heard of any updates about when the next batch of acceptances will go out? I interviewed during the second week of Feb so I'm hoping we should find out pretty soon.

I too just withdrew, and wishing you guys best of luck. The school seemed like a good place to be, and I know the hospital is great (years ago my nephew spent weeks in the neonatal icu), but with cheaper options, I had to let it go.

Has anyone who interviewed February 1 or later heard any news?

Hey guys,

I had a Feb interview and just called the admissions office. Although, they were kind of vague, one of the person said that we should hear by the end of next week.

Hey DiegoT:

I also withdrew 3 days ago via email, but never recieved confirmation. Did you email them? I'm going to follow up with snail mail just in case.

Good luck to everyone else, it was a tough decision and NYMC was awesome but just too expensive.

Just got an acceptance today!! interviewed Feb 16th.

Does that mean that I'm going to have to wait another month to hear back from a March 14th interview!?! That's June!
