NYMC - Waitlist 2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I did some stealthy snooping and last year the class was full as of 7/12. so that means we still have a few weeks right?

How long are people waiting before you re-submit an AMCAS application? waiting = blah :/

So I have a question for those of you waiting on NYMC and not accepted anywhere else. If you are reapplying and plan on submitting soon, do you also send your primary to NYMC? What if they see that you are reapplying before they even give you a decision for this year? Would they look at that negatively in a sense that you have given on this year even though you really havent? Thoughts anyone?

if it makes u feel better u can always add a school in later.. but my advice as a second year applicant is to not wait a single day because youre holding out hope.. the longer u wait the worse off youll be for the next app cycle. i paid the price bigtime for it this year by getting all late interviews and all waitlists from my MD schools. ( i do have a DO acceptance which i will happily take though )

I have submitted my amcas already and verified it, but I didn't submit it to NYMC as I want to wait and see what will happen with the WL. I did submit it to some other school I am WL at. I applied really late last year and hope that this year applying early will help me out.

Guys---as far as reapplying goes (I can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone). How much do you have to change your personal statement and the way you write your activities on AMCAS? Can you modify your personal statement slightly, use your old activities verbatim, and add a few more from the last cycle? Also, what if you still aren't sure what your plans are for next year? Ugh, this is so stressful!

Also (last question, I swear!), as a wait list candidate at NYMC, what are the most amount of steps you can take for financial aid? So far all I've done is fill out FAFSA. Do I need to fill out any school-specific forms?

There are school specific forms (i.e. picking out a lender), that they will probably email after you get in. I might suggest price shopping for a lender.

I would say you should modify your personal statement and remove some of it so you can replace it with updated thoughts on the last year. if you give them the same thing now as you did last year its not going to look any better for you.

also, u can keep your activities the same bc changing themcept for grammar isnt really wise, cuz it could look like you lied. But make sure you're adding new activities to show what you did in the last year.

thanks guys!

so to recap, best thing to do would be:

1. submit ASAP
2. change PS
3. don't change activities list, but add on new activities
4. don't add NYMC until later

yes?

I think so, haha! Thanks A LOT for your input guys...it really helps. Also, need we re-submit transcripts to AMCAS? I wasn't in school last year, I had a job, so I have no new grades to report...so does AMCAS just use the same transcripts I had sent to them last year, or do I need to re-send the same transcripts to them? THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!

sorry this might not be the best place to post this ...but for those who withdrew, did nymc send you back your deposit refund yet? i withdrew a month ago and still havent gotten anything....i wonder if i should call them.

u have to resubmit so get on that pronto

It looks like someone got an acceptance yesterday, according to the Official Waitlist movement thread.

What was the date you withdrew? I think you only get deposits back if you withdraw before May 15th. You should call.

thursday and nobody heard anything?

no dice for me, here's to next week...

Just wanted to let you all know that I declined my seat at NYMC today, I really hope it goes to one of you guys. Good luck!

as usual, post here if you got off the waitlist this week or found out about any updates from nymc

hi guys, sorry this is so late -- i was on vacation!

i withdrew from the waitlist a couple of weeks ago, but still received an accept on 6/17. i declined it yesterday (sorry again, on vacation and wasn't checking my e-mail.) so there's a spot open :luck:

hopefully theres some good news for some of us on thursday.

last week it seems like the acceptances were given out tuesday, not thursday. who knows when it's going to be this week. nymc is messing with our minds.

For those who got off the waitlist, does NYMC email or call you to notify? How much time do they give you to decide?

Email with a packet sent to your permanent address. I think they wanted to know within a week.e

Hey Guys,
Just got off of it this morning, first acceptance so you can bet I'm taking it. Good Luck to you all!!!!

you have no idea how envious of you i am---congratulations. what time did u receive the email? now i'm freaking myself out because i have gmail and didn't really look at my SPAM emails this morning before I deleted them. an acceptance probably wasn't in my SPAM folder anyway.... 🙁

Hey Guys,
Just to let you know I'm really hoping you all get in, this was my second time applying so I know how hard it is. I got the email at 12:08 est. I had a 30 MCAT, and a 3.4 UGPA and a 3.3 science GPA. Though I also had a 3.7 from Loyola's SMP. If there's anything else you guys want to know just ask. My advisor at Loyola said most waitlist movement for NYMC comes in July, so theres still plenty of time/hope left!

Thanks for the consolation---this is my first time applying, but I am wrealing in pain right now in limbo land as NYMC is my only wait list and I can't bare the thought of applying again. I want this SO bad...I don't know if the most wait list movement happens in July w/ NYMC, but I sure hope your adviser is right as that gives me a small bit of hope. Hopefully we will be classmates, and congrats again!

CONGRATS!!!:hardy:

Glad to see a contributing member of this thread get in, haha. I also wanted to thank you for the PM's and advice regrading a LOI to NYMC. You were very helpful. I love this school and hope to enjoy the excitment of an acceptance in the near future.

congrats kansasbuff! i've noticed you posted here often and you really deserve this acceptance for reapplying again.

and i'm with you accept08, first time applicant and nymc waitlist is my only one. i am dying to get off this thing and i'll keep my fingers crossed for the both of us.

congrats kansasbuff!!!
You deserve it!

I was accepted today and I am going to NYMC!!! Here's some information for you guys. Email arrived at 10:08 am, My stats 32M GPA 3.72, 2 thank you letters sent (1 to the school and 1 to the interviewer), 1 letter of intent, and 1 update letter. I sent my 2009 application, which was sent out on June 24. Well I hope this is enough info and I hope to see all of you this year. YEAH!!!!:hardy:

Welcome new classmates!!!

Hang in there waitlistees - still plenty of time left.

gplex...you really think so??? I am beginning to lose all hope... 🙁
GeorgesStPierre...keepin my fingers crossed for us too!

Keep your hopes up. Still lots of waitlist movement all around. If you don't have an acceptance elsewhere, I suggest submitting your 2009 AMCAS. Hope for the best, prepare for various alternate realities.

I'm in the process of doing my 2009 AMCAS right now. Do you think that NYMC will still be taking people off the wait list...? It is my only option. Also, does anyone have any suggestions as to what schools in the NYC area I could enroll in to do some graduate course work (i.e., not a SMP but just to take some graduate courses)?

I know just how painful this waitlist business is....I'm a third time applicant

I'm currently waitlisted at NYMC and would love love love to go there...I'm also waitlisted at UC Davis and UPitt, also both wonderful schools I'd love to attend as well. I'm accepted at UIC- which is exciting, and I know I'll like it- but a girl can dream for other options.

3.54 GPA with a 3.3 science, 35 MCAT- activities and such were plentiful.
In 2004 I applied...late....very late. And got no interviews.
In 2005 I applied early, interviewed at 3 schools and was waitlisted at at UC Davis and USC and didn't get in anywhere. (I did get an interview at NYMC and must have blown it- I was so sad!)
I did a 1 year MS program in Nutrition at Columbia (beautiful program, and they're still accepting apps for this fall- shameless plug) and did very well there. I had to re-take the MCAT because they were older than 3 years and got the exact same score and breakdown (sweet relief).

3 times applying isn't really anything to brag about- or be ashamed of- so many well-qualified applicants just don't get in the first time they try- and so many more get in off the waitlist.

....searching for a point to this post...I guess I just want to say to the people who are waitlisted and haven't had an acceptance yet- you can have hope, but don't wait to re-apply or find alternatives for the fall! I applied for my MS program when I was waitlisted, and I was so glad to have a fall-back plan when things didn't work out for me. Also, don't give up- it might seem like it's too much work to re-take the MCAT, have the expense of re-applying, or make plans to go to a medical school that isn't your top choice, but in the end, if it's what you really truly want to do, it's worth it to do the time and expense.

And keep updating for acceptances- I probably look at this thread a bajilliion times a day to reassure myself that the waitlist hasn't been forgotten!

I also want to plug Columbia's MS program in nutrition. I visited and they do great stuff, especially if you're considering primary or preventive care. I was set on going to the MS program until my NYMC acceptance - even got the housing packet last week.

And yes, there will likely be more waitlist movement. People are still getting in all over the country. But again - get moving on Plan B.

congrats to both of you on your acceptances. I dont even know what I would do if I got accepted but Itd probably go something like a kid in a candy shop.

I got my first MD acceptance last week at Albany Medical College which i had written off cuz i had peaked at my file at the interview and my raw score (preinterview) was about as low as it could get. I suppose I was reviewed favorably at the interview.

In any event, if I got into NYMC, which im still hoping for it would give me a choice between med schools, something I thought I would never have. and NYMC has a big advantage of being only 45 min away from home.

I wouldnt even know where to begin in comparing these two schools.

I heard Albany has a terrible campus. Is that true?

For all of you accepted elsewhere but on the NYMC wait list, please go elsewhere!!! haha j/k. (sorta). I was just doing some research on Columbia's MS in Nutrition program per your suggestions, and it looks really interesting. Do you have to take the GREs or do they accept MCATS?

They take the MCAT and any med school LOR's.

Congrats to those who have gotten in already and best of luck to everyone still on the WL. I sent a LOI and some additional materials to NYMC a couple of months ago and am still hoping to get pulled at some point. In the meantime I've started classes at Tulane's ACP postbacc hoping to link to the med class.

well its connected to a hospital in a city thats less than impressive itself.. the facing of the entrance to the school is pretty but not the campus, if u can call it that did not impress me.

I just called NYMC and they said that if we're waitlisted, we should still send in our primaries now and that won't affect our waitlist status. Better to be safe and apply early I guess.

He also said the class is currently full but as people drop out there will be more movement.
