Hey everyone, I could really use some advice because I’m kind of stressing and don’t want to mess this up.

Here’s my situation:

My fiancée is currently a D1 at a private dental school a few states away from me. I’ve been accepted to a med school about 2.5 hours from her, which I’m super grateful for, but I also applied to the school she’s at and got waitlisted there. That school was already one of my top choices before all of this, and I feel like I align really well with their mission and focus, so it’s not just about being in the same place, but obviously that’s a huge factor too.

The problem is the waitlist is probably closing in ~3 weeks, and I’m starting to feel desperate. We’ve both agreed I need to start school this year (so we don’t get too far off timeline-wise), but I really don’t want to start med school away from her if there’s anything else I can do.

Stats/context:

* GPA at or above their average

* MCAT about 4–5 points below their average

* Strong service/community hours (which they emphasize a lot)

* Started my first clinical job ~4 months ago

* I “check the box’s” of other stats

What I’ve done so far:

* September: Met the Dean of Admissions in person (fiancée introduced me briefly), got a tour, talked about my app

* December: Sent an update letter (included 200+ additional service hours + research)

* February: Interviewed

* Early March: Got waitlisted

* Shortly after: They actually set up a Zoom with me to go over my application (super helpful, gave me advice on what to work on)

* Early May: Sent another update + Letter of Intent (they recommended this timing)

* They started pulling from the waitlist ~3 weeks ago

I have no idea where I am ranked, and they don’t tell us. I’ve heard there are ~150 people on the waitlist.

At this point I just want to make sure I’ve done EVERYTHING I reasonably can without annoying the admissions committee.

Ideas we’ve had:

* Have my fiancée talk to the dental school dean to see if they have any advice/connections

* Email the Dean of the med school

* Try to meet/talk with the Dean of Admissions again

* Send another LOI/update

* Or just do nothing and wait

I don’t want to come across as pushy or hurt my chances this late in the game, but I also don’t want to sit back if there’s something that could actually help.

Has anyone been in a similar situation or have any advice on what (if anything) is appropriate at this stage?

Appreciate any help 🙏

Welcome to the forums.

Honestly, I think you've done everything you can. They even gave you a Zoom meeting to advise you on a reapplication, which is probably more than most applicants would get. I have no doubt that conversations between the schools' admissions directors have been documented. I'm sure you have signaled your acceptance to the medical school admissions team.

You cannot count on getting pulled off the waitlist. Cross our fingers, and hopefully it works out.

On the positive side, 2.5 hours is inconvenient but not horribly far. Do well in your studies; elective rotations could be arranged closer to where her dental school is located, so that's your incentive two years from now.

P.S. Yes, I've navigated this situation before. And it worked out.

Thanks for your input. My fingers are definitely crossed!

And yes getting into a the closest school to her that isn’t in the same city was definitely a huge relief. We can make it work if we have to!
