Pn229---i have tried to find info on the public gym, can you give me any info? i searched under bath house and gyms etc....thanx for your help!

FYI: I just got a letter from NYU w/ some set dates. Nothing new to report. Move in: Aug 18th. We get our instruments that Wednesday. First day on the 26th.

I'll probably just wait to see where most dental students go to work out b4 I sign up for a health club. I'm hoping there's a Bally's nearby. Then again, there was an interesting article in the Chicago Sun-Times today about a new Crunch aerobics class. It's called "Strip Class". The bad thing is that it's led by a male exotic dancer.

By the way, I'll probably get a notebook this weekend (hopefully there'll be some good Memorial day sales). I've got it narrowed down to either a Sony Vaio or a Dell. Any opinions on either...or can anybody pull some strings and hook me up with a discount? :p I've already looked into working at Best Buy for like a day to get a discount, but I hear they only get like $20 off over cost.

i heard that Costco has pretty good deals on notebooks...i am prob gonna go for the dell....you might wanna wait till aug b/c the back to school sales start then:)

Yeah, I thought about waiting til late summer for the good sales, but I don't want to take a chance in the computer breaking down on me. I heard that computers (if they were to break down)usually break down the first month you get them...

Anybody know of any 3-day weekends in September? Labor day? Some sort of religious holidays? Anything?

3 more posts to 50!!

The gymn...Astor Levy (I think) as it is called is run by the Parks and recreations departmen tof NYC. It's not hard to get a membership. Bring a $25 check to 25th and 1st ave. Walk a little bit towards the bridge to Waterside plaza, make a right and you'll see an old looking white building. Go on there and ask for a membership. It's real easy. One problem with this gym..a lot of people...I think they live there sometimes. anyways, have fun at NYUCD folks.

Hello fellow classmates,
I just got my financial aid packet today. Anyone else get theirs? Kinda intimidating looking at all the loans we gonna have to take. I just got back from a visit in NY and checked out off campus housing options. NYU has an off campus housing office which has listings of availiable housing for students. It looked pretty good but its still kinda hard to find anything so far in advance; its much easier one month in advance.

i was accepted by NYU but decided not to go..even tho many of my friends are there.

well, IMO its not that hard to get in but probably not the easiest one to get in (interview was a joke tho), but the thing is ...did yu guys know NYU will fail out 30% ~70 student the 1st year?

so study hard, cuz my friend who is a 2nd year now at NYU said this...

The reason they admit students so easily is that they want to get as much money from their students. but they also know that they cant graduate all those students...so they flunk them.

if yu fail 1st year they do give yu the summer to make it up.

anyways, who cares about whats the easiest and hardest to get in...as long as yur a dentist. have fun there...

So, do you have anything positive to say?

to david kang,
if NYU has results like that then it shows they are commited to make everybody as good dentist and they would never flunk anybody who has been consistent with their studies so it seems you were more afraid of the challenge then the results!!!!!!! :) •••quote:••• ••••you have to be the change you expect in the world.

they may not intentionally flunk students...but they don't exactly provide the most support for struggling students so in order to make room for all the advanced standing students that come in so that by 3rd year there is enough room in the clinics for everybody. As you can read in the dental forum, there is a lot of politics in dental school....not just nyu....all schools...

Did anyone else get financial aid info?

no finaid stuff yet...but i got the labcoat size info...do the numbers next to the sizes indicate length or waist or what?

I emailed my lab coat size to that William Blade guy. Remember that those sizes are really huge! Just to be sure, I went to Gingiss Tuxedos and had them clarify those sizes/measure me up.

hey piguy..so are those numbers indicating length?

hey vishal,

why are yu so defensive?
i just stated the facts and NYU was never near my choices...it was my back up school

challenge? gettin in wasnt much of a challenge.

i love here in Southern California and dont wana pay couple thousand/month for a crappy place in NY.

plus from what i heard from dental students(East coast), dental schools in the West is far more advanced. All the newest dental technologies are 1st introduced in the West.

why do yu think schools here are much harder to get into? (UCLA, UCSF, USC etc)

i do have something good to say about NYU...they take yu guys out for a city tour~

Sonigee:

I don't think it's the length either. The girl at Gingiss took out a tape measure and measured my upper body...just go by your jacket size.
If it'll help, I'm a little over 5'10" and 160 lbs.....and I ordered a medium. I was going to go with a large, but she said a medium would be more than enough.

I just got my financial aid packet the other day, but I recieved my master promissory paperwork (MPN) last week. They said it takes up to 6 weeks to process so I hope all you guys have recieved it already. If not it should be coming or else I'd give NYU a call. By the way, I did it on their website and electronically signed it. I guess you can do it before you get your paperwork, just go to www.hesc.org. Everything is pretty self explanitory. Good luck. :)

hey guys,
what kind of alternative loans everybody are planning to apply for? on the MPN site they suggest citibank or salliemae and the research i have done,i came to the conclusion of taking it from citibank cos they have no origination fee and the interst rate is prime + 0.25% and i guess not body gives better than that!!!!! pour in your thoughts about it. :) •••quote:••• ••••GRADUATION SPEECHES WERE INVENTED LARGELY IN THE BELIEF THAT COLLEGE STUDENTS SHOULD NEVER BE RELEASED INTO THE WORLD UNTIL THEY HAVE BEEN PROPERLY SEDATED.

You guys know who Regina is? My mom told me that somebody called my permanent address/phone number and it was from somebody from NYU financial aid. I won't be able to return her call until tomorrow morning. Wonder what she wanted....

hey guys....the clock is ticking!!! freaky eh'? i was wondering what kind of stuff ya'll are gathering for the big move? i don't even know where to begin.....any suggestions:)

I'm not sure what I'm bring yet. I've already ruled out my bike. I'll wait until next year for that.

I don't think we'll find out about our roomate situation until August. I think I'll wait until I hear from NYU about that until I consider bringing a TV,VCR, etc...

For now, just clothes, blankets, books, and kitchen stuff...

everyone's getting ready for school now.. yeah~~did you guys get the laptops already? i have this pentium II vaio.. i think we need to have at least pentium III processor.. is it cheaper to change the whole processor or to buy a brand new one?? well... also during the orientation week (a week! that seems long, doens't it?? i wonder what we are gonna do)we need to have "professional attires" how professional? and also.. remember to include a telephone... i know they don't provide one... and a lamp.. a box of highlighters... :p

When do we find out who we are rooming with- anyone know?
I am initially packing my clothes and going. I talked to someone in the housing department who said we need dishes, lamp, tv. None of the rooms have carpet- so you need that if you want it I guess.

hey guys...so i got my finaid promisary note thing in the mail yest...are you just gonna choose b/n the lenders they gave us or research some other ones....i am hoping that the housing dept sends us our room info soon...i am praying for a private suite..as far as things like toaster ovens and such, those are not allowed right? i wonder if they have microwaves and stuff like that...is everyone doing the 26th street dorm?

Just sent out my NYU ID card thingy in the mail. I also got a note saying that we won't find out our rooming info (including our roomate) until the first week of August.

so.. everyone has received a financial aid package?? am i the only one without one?? do you guys know the name (or e-mail address) of the person who takes care of the financial aid stufff?

I haven't gotten one either...I'll probably give them a ring sometime soon...

I emailed Tanya in Financial Aid at NYU and she said I should be getting my financial aid packet within 3-5 days. Looks like they are sending more out this week.

hows it goin everyone? i heard that during the week of orientation, they take us on a tour of NYC..do you know if thats true? i think that would be awesome. ..are you all relaxin and stuff? i have totally been procrastinating about getting my laptop...i will start looking soon..keep me posted... :D

Question:
Does anyone have any idea when Christmas break will begin for us? I know I am thinking way ahead- but I have an opportunity for cheap airfare if I book soon. Thanks!

Hi everybody,

This is my first time posting. I'll be at NYU next year as well. Has anybody seen the 26th street residence hall? And I haven't recieved financial aid info either.

THat's actually a good question. I kinda wish we could get a brochure on 26th apartments. A picture would be nice so we could gauge what kind of environment we're gonna be living in for the next year...

Hey Apoptosis,
Nice name. I have stayed in the 26th street apartments on numerous occasions. They are extremely convienent and very nice to be able to live close to your classmates. I only stayed in the private bedroom so I can't comment on the shared studios. The private bedrooms are pretty nice although you definetly have to pay a premium for it. The security for the building is very tight. Both graduate and undergrads live there althought the undergrads have to live on the higher floors; there are something like 40-50 stories I think  I personally will be finding housing off campus since NYU dosen't offer married housing. Hope that helps!

Yes, you really pay a premium for convienence of living close to the school. I heard the same thing about the elevator thing, it takes forever for the elevators to go through all 30 or something floors. If anybody is interested in off-campus housing, www.watersideplaza.com is a good place, it has a gym with one year membership included and the Gristede's grocery store in the building which would be a real convience for those late night snacks. I haven't been there myself but the website has some useful information.

are any of you guys going to order scrubs? just curious... :) what else is going on guys?

do you guys know Amy Knowles' e-mail address(from NYUCD administration office)?
sonigee! when did you receive financil aid package?
i'm still somewhere in asia.. backpacking! heehee
getting ready to head back to US..

I actually have the NYU interview folder sitting here next to me.....Amy Knowles:

[email protected]

I probably won't order any scrubs until I hear something. I do have a pair when I took gross anatomy so I'll probably just recycle those.

Just a waiting game now. 2 more months! What are you guys doing this summer?...besides backpacking in Asia?

Hi All,
Just read everone's posts. I have been so busy with finishing my thesis that I haven't had much time to do much of anything- so that is what I hav been doing so far this summer.
I finally recieved my financial aid packet yesterday in the mail. As for the scrubs issue- I have plenty of pairs from taking Gross anatomy as well. I would just wait to buy them until we either get something in the mail saying we need to order them or until the first day. Hope everyone is relaxing and having a good summer! 8 more weeks!

Hello all,
I know you can buy scrubs from NYU and they aren't that expensive. For all you who are trying to find offcampus housing, I was successful in finding a place just a block away from campus! It wasn't that difficult finding. If I'm there early and any of you need a place to crash before the dorms open up, just let me know. Till then, take care.

Hey Guys, My name is Howard and I made it to NYU too! Just wanted to say hello to my fellow classmates. Just wondering, does our fin. aid cover our laptop purchase? Thanks!

Hey Howard- nice to meet you. I think I remember reading somewhere in all the brochures they have sent that the laptop is covered under financial aid.

Does anybody know when we get our first bill? Is it at orientation 'er what? Maybe later?

Brian, good to see you back. How's your thesis going? I pretty much finished up all my stuff and ran. I'm not setting foot inside a lab ever again. Poor rats.

hello... howard!! it's so good to see another new name.. yeah!! are you gonna commute or live on 26th street? i guess i'll see you in august...in NEW YORK CITY.. yeah!!!!

hey guys...i just got back from puerto vallerta and i am totally missing it!! i am definitely going to go back there during our summer break next year! I am hating returning to normal life! hows everyone doing?
