After my interview at NYU in April, just today I was told that a mail is being sent on my way. However, the mail was sent via regular mail. I live in west coast and it still hasn't arrived (apparently the mail was sent 2 weeks ago).

For those who have heard from NYU, just out of curiosity. Does regular mail mean a rejection letter (a rejection mail is less important for them, hence they don't want to airmail it)?

they r always regular mail - rejection or acceptance. but 2 weeks is way too long, i would call them if i was u. or u could be on waitlist which means u will probably get in cuz a lot of ppl drop out of nyu.

same situation for me....they eventually faxed it.

i actually got the snail mail a few days ago...which is over a month after they said they had sent it.

actually the fax and the waitlist letter was dated march 5th...and my interview was on march 18th

anyone else get that?

oh i just 😍 😍 😍 NYU's administration uber mucho 😀

Actually, they don't always use the US postal service - my letter was sent via fed ex.

i'm on the west coast too. it took about a month for me mail to reach me. What happened was I called Amy about two months after my interview after hearing no news at all. She told me a decision had just been made and a letter was on its way. She wouldn't tell me what the letter said. It took about a month before the letter finally reached me.

For some reason, NYU letters tend to be very slow. My interview letter also took about three weeks to reach me. When I got it, it was after the deadline to reply. Come to think of it, when I finally got my acceptance letter, it was after the deadline too.

If you haven't received anything, give Amy Knowles a call. She can't tell you what the letter says, but she will fax it to you.

Good luck. Hope it's good news.

If it's snail mail, then its probably a wait list/or rejection. I first received a waitlist letter in the mail and two days after received a priorty express envelope (acceptance) under my door.

Hope this helps, and best of luck!

That is very random I am surprised they did that...I was waitlisted last cycle and remained that way for nearly a year (until I removed myself from consideration). That must have been an interesting 2-3 days.

I sent a follow up letter, stating that although I believed the interview went well (and it did), there was something else I did not feel we adequately addressed.

NYU is good for me as I crave a metropolitan enviroment and many schools in NYC for my wife.

I hope everyone finds something that works for them.

Yeah but 2 days later? I sent a follow up letter stating my desire (at the time) to go there and even knew the head of OMFS (a lot of good that did). In the end, I am glad I am not going there...I just dont think its for me (no offense). No doubt I am going to work hard at Indiana....but I think the class size is a bit large at NYU.

I don't know about the mail thing... I actually got a phone call from my interviewer 2 days later telling me that I got in... and then like 1.5 months later the letter came. NYU must be still using that ol' pony express or some ****.

Hi all,

How should I translate my waitlist letter from NYU? Is there any chance to get in this fall? How many students approximately would decide to attend other schools over NYU?

Good luck to all of us. :luck:

What are ur score HappyDent,
Is it your scores which got u the waitlist or u messed up the interview. Or what was the reason?

I don't think it's any of these. It's just very late into the cycle and probably when my group interviewed, it was for a waitlist.

I am not sure what this is suppose to mean. Your group interviewed, you mean u were unlucky enough to get waitlisted everywhere u interview. there must be something in your application which pulled u down. Just a thought? Think about it? Or you might know more than I do?

no hard feelings. 👍

I see you are on early morning. Well, good morning first.

I inteviewed in April, which is very late into the application cycle. There were a few of us inteviewing that day. I think the major factor I got waitlisted is that there were no seats available and we were inteviewing for a waitlist. That's all. 😳

happydent: if you don't mind what was u're scores and when did you interview?

Didnt happen for me last year...so dont count on it. Its the old "wait and see" situation. I heard not many came off last years waitlist...my dad (dentist) thinks it has to do with the mandatory AEGD/GPR rule they instituted and seeing that they might have had to provide some seats for residencies(if there werent enough for every grad in NY state) for recently graduated students of NYU or any of the New York dental schools. If you add up the 3rd/4th years plus post-grads...there really isnt room for an extra amount of 1st years to come off waitlist...I had heard that at end of summer NYU used to free up 10 or so spots and take people off the waitlist (even though we dont go into clinic first year). This was his theory and I realize 1st years dont go near clinic and the NY state rule doesnt go into effect until 2007.

Why would they interview you if they have no seats on the first place. Again, why would they interview and waste their and your precious time

Because the waitlist can move anywhere from like 0-100 seats in any given year, so they want to make sure that in the rare case it moves a lot of seats they have backup people to fill them, after all, not being able to fill even one seat means losing money! Oh no! so they feel it is just to make people waste their time and money to fly/drive up there even though they probly don't really have a chance anyway unless their grades are much better than the other ~200 people on the list. 😡

2 schools i interviewed at told me at the interview that the class was already full and they were only interviewing me for the waitlist. That's how schools do, they keep on interviewing even if the class is full at that point.

Yup...I interviewed at my state school w/o knowing this...and found out later that being waitlisted was inevitable because they effectively filled the class before my interview date.

2Pac this happens all the time....you have a lot to learn. No offense dude...but I think you should experience the cycle and then give people advice and/or criticism. You are about to apply to dental school for the first time and you write about things you havent even encountered. Wait until the time comes when you go to interview, December 1st, Waitlists, late interviews, etc....only then will you understand how things work. I think its better for an applicant who hasnt even applied to be more inquisitive rather than making it seem like you know everything when clearly you do not. There are exceptions to this rule (ISUSteve seems to know a thing or two about admissions and he isnt applying until next cycle) but just wait and you will see how things work.....please dont make broad generalizations.

Thank you for saying that Bullfan. I try to educate myself as best I can about this process. I'm not applying until May 2007 by the way.

Regarding the mail:

My interview letter was sent early Feb, but I received it early April.
Came in regular mail.

Regarding waitlist/acceptance:

I had the interview mid April. Waitlist letter came a week later. The week following that I got the bump to acceptance.

I addressed the lost mail problem to them, and afterwards they mailed with overnight delivery.

So that means poeple do interview even in April and May. Where exactly did u interview.
