Since everybody else is doing it. I thought I should go ahead and start one for NYU. Just curious as to who else is planning on attending. Also, just wondering what people are going to be doing for housing in NY. Are most of you all planning on staying in the dorms or find off campus housing???

not 100% sure yet, but if nothing else comes along nyu will be it.

Were any of you accepted w/scores below 20 and are possibly out-of-state residents as well? I haven't seen a single person claim they've been accepted to NYU with lower than a 21AA.

Well I was accepted but I don't have a 21AA  My stats are in my signature below. If Stony Brook doesn't come calling, NYU will be it 😀

As for housing, I'll be commuting since I live in Queens, NY.

hey prelude, see u in august

as for living, i found a much cheaper option than the 18k a year for the dorms... i'm gonna be stayin in NJ, jersey city to be exact... found an apt across the st from the PATH station that i will share for 500 bucks a month... it'll be a 25-30 minute commute including a 10 minute walk, but in the end it'll be worth it for saving the 50k over the next 4 years...

and to the last poster... i'm out of state, NJ to be exact, but i dont think that matters since NYU is a private school... and my DAT's were all in the 20's

i'm also thinking about living in nj and just taking the path over...18k is just little too much for housing.. my brother just got a job in the city..so he's thinking about buying property in NJ close to the city...i heard Newport, NJ has some nice listings for properties..so i will probably stay with him... he's thinking about renting out a room to someone else too

prelude, are you from ny?

No I'm from Houston so I really don't know the area that well. I'm kind of reluctant to stay in the dorms and am leaning towards something off campus but I don't wanna commute all the way from Jersey. I know I won't be able to do the 45 min commute thing daily especially in the mornings so I wanna get something close to school but also know that it's gonna be extremely expensive.

i'm waiting for stony too!! stony's awesome, my bro goes there but they didnt contact me yet either....

They gave me a 100K scholarship (25k per year if I keep my grades above 2.0!), but I'm still not going. Very nice offer, though.

hey i'm just wondering how long did it take for you guys to receive the letter packet in the mail after you receive ur acceptance email? i got my email ... little over a week ago, still nothing in the mail

call them up and let them know... i never received my first acceptance letter they sent and the second time it was sent it took almost another week...
only had a week and a half to mail back my deposit by the time i got the letter...

I'll likely be going to NYU as well unless some other school accepts.

As for housing--No idea. I have wife and 4 boys, so I'm trying to find an apartment or condo and commute in.

Only place I've seen affordable condos on the web so far is someplace called Parkchester, Bronx.

I'll take a look at Jersey too.

Is it just eapleitez so far? I have these stats and was accepted without interview.

Overall GPA: 3.57
Sci GPA: 3.51
23/24/18
BSc. Hon.

MolarMomma said she got one, too.

I was also accepted without interview.

do you mind sharing when your interview was? Thanks.

I've been accepted to and have committed to attend NYUCD this August. Specifically, I was accepted last year but deferred in order to continue working one more year. I'm from Boston, and did my undergrad in Chicago.

Some thoughts:

NYU was one of my top choices from the start. And after many visits, I'm absolutely excited with the school, and convinced of the positive changes that have been implemented top-down. Problems associated with large class size (i.e. lack of personalized attention) seem to be alleviating.

I have read the many complaints regarding NYUCD here on SDN. The high price tag of living in Manhattan (which is a glaring 'negative' of the school) notwithstanding, I am positive that the prime location, networking ability, ample patient population, student diversity, interesting research activities (e.g. the recent NIH grant), and new clinical and extracurricular facilities make the school a 'leader' in the dental education field.

My experience working with Fortune 500 clients as a management consultant has taught me two things: 1) At the end of the day, SIZE and MONEY speak volumes (albeit in "unnoticeably loud" ways) in the world of healthcare, and 2) Networking with professionals both in and out of your own field is of utmost importance to future success. In sum, I believe NYUCD will provide the opportunities for an aspiring and creative future dentist - and as long as one is ready to grasp them diligently, it'll be the place for him/her.

For anyone who has interviewed at NYU in late January or February... how long did it take for you to find out your decision... and how did you find out, email, phone call, mail, aadsas?

I like this thread!! really good thread. I feel at home with this thread. I love you 3.0 gpa peeople. I just dunno how u guys pulled 21 on those DAT's.

You usually should hear from them in a week this time of the year. They make a decision on your application almost right away.

If you don't hear in a week, well thats not good.

eamonmon said:
Well I donot think that is true. Every body is saying that they got accepted from 2-3 weeks. I would wait more than a week before i start to get worried. Did any one interview in February and got an e-mail already?

I interviewed in late january and got accepted one week later by email. Usually they let you know in one week.

If you guys are goin to NYU, i think u should live in NYC. I grew up in Jersey City, and for those of you planning on commuting back and forth, it's gonna suck!! I did that for 2 years when I interned in Manhattan, and it takes up wayyy too much time, and catching the train every morning and night will stress you out. Dental school will be stressful enough. Anyway, my friends that currently go to NYUCD are splitting amazing apartment for great deals.

If any of u guys are interested, I'm more than willing to meet up and house hunt together. If not, see u in August!

Hey prelude, have u found anything nice yet?

Hey there,

i was just wondering how u got to ucla, or what helped. i had a little higher gpa and 21 dat. and i went to ucla. just a bit confused. good luck though, i have tons of friends at ucla, good but tough.

maybe this will help a little. NYu doesnt seem to have specific acceptance guidlines. they have the standard interview process, but at the same time, u can get in w/o an interview. i interviewed in early march, and by the time i flew home i recievced an email saying i got in.

not sure if i was there on the 13th or not. but were we talking to the 3rd yr president, ? and a 3rd yr took us on the tour

i don't think the commute is that bad and i've been living in newport for 3 years. my commute to the nyu undergrad campus is only about 20-25 minutes door to door and it would be around 30-35 minutes to nyucd. (i know because i volunteered at bellevue and nyucd a year ago)
living in newport saved me a TON of money on rent. but with that said, i know dental school is going to be extremely tough so maybe the commute would get too tiring for you guys. my current rent is $2356 for a 2br/2ba at about 1000 sq/ft2. i share w/ my girlfriend and dog now but its still extremely spacious. you can comfortably fit 3 people into this unit and pay around $800 each. anyways, i'm just giving you guys my 2 cents.

Yea, the d3s were jared and some other guy.

Just wanted to revive this thread since I will be joining you guys! I can't wait to get started...

Anyone live or planning to live on Roosevelt Island? I wonder what the commute is like from there...

Also, anyone know of an apartment complex near the school that accepts dogs?

Thanks in advance!

What do the dorms look like? Has anyone seen them..and what's the sharing situation like?

I believe the dorms are single dorms....I don't think you share the room. The only reason why I don't think I'll dorm is because the dorm is $1800 per month. You can find cheaper rent studios with your own kitchen and bath. For instance, Kips Bay court...But, if you want to meet people, there's probably no better way than to dorm!

$1,800/month for a single dorm room?? Wow! Does that come with personal foot massages every morning? That's a rip off, even in NY!

You really should visit the area that NYU is located. It is really nice hence it's price tag. Everything is expensive in NYC.

People, what people?
I thought i was supposed to be a nerd in dental school. I guess that's not happening anymore.

I'm planning on nerding it up actually, it's easier to do when your serious girlfriend is not in the same town... 🙁 Anyways, the competition is gonna be fierce, and we're all gonna need to work our tails off to be among the top students in the class. I hope there's a lot of comaradery though, and that a lot of us will be helping each other out. I'm sick of all the sabotaging and cutthroat competition that happened at my undergrad institution, and I'm looking forward to a better experience at NYUCD 😀

if you can possibly live in Manhattan...you should because it will become a pain in the butt, but some people do it and are doing just fine.

You mean commuting into Manhattan will be a pain in the butt?

The NYU Dorm:

You and your roommate get your own bedrooms but share a kitchen and bathroom. However, if you choose to live with a random roommate, then you might end up with a non-dental, graduate rommate.

I am also thinking about dorming if the apartment hunt fails.

I actually went to the NYU Medical and Dental bookstore today, and passed by the Kips Bay Apartmets. They're not so glamarous for its price. I'd rather dorm or get a better apartment. I've seen amazing apartments for less than $1800, but they're about 20-30 mins away from the school. Anybody else find anything interesting?

Hey Beamer, I'm kinda browsing for apartments close to NYU too. Do you know if there is a meal plan or something with the dorms???
I know the dorms are kinda pricey but like you said, it is an option.
and finally where exactly are those amazing apartments the 20-30 mins ones?? thanks

Dorms suck and is overpriced, though you do meet a lot of people there. Though you'll get around to pretty much meeting most everyone after awhile anyways. It's just the easiest way since everything's prearranged, this is a good option if you're not too familiar with the city and not exactly the adventurous, plucky resourceful type.

The best deals generally are sublets, where if you're lucky you can snag a pretty tight place for not too expensive. This is best if you're sort of independent and can hold your own living and dealing with potential random people.

Places to start: Kips Bay, Waterside Plaza, Peter Cooper and Stuyvesant Town. All of those are within 5 minutes walking to school.

Best of luck w/ finding places and see you guys here next year.

When are you guys buying the laptop? Are you guys lookin at the Dell or IBM? We can buy any model of a Dell or IBM as long as they meet the tech specs, right?

Thanks!

I just bought a rad Dell E1705. It satisfies my soul!

drengineer said:

Hey...that's the one I was lookin at! 🙂 It seems like a great deal from dell's website... I wonder if we get any sort of discount if we buy through the school?

I don't know if we get any rad deal thru NYU dental school, but i did get 20% discount through EPP membership + 10% for something else and $100 mail in rebate. So it was about $700 off of that kickass laptop.

Mind you, it is quite big in size thou. But extremely powerful machine. It has everything that a computer engineer like me would want.

Anybody got the list of specs required for the laptop?

Don't buy a laptop from school. By the one you want and just get a warranty. I am in the dorms right now and I think its the way to go...you meet everyone and make more friends. It makes the first year easier.

Peolpe do commute. Manhattan is busy in the morning. Don't know exacty how bad, but all the commuters wish they lived nearby. For instance, if there is a gap in the schedule you can run to the dorm and take a quick nap etc etc.

Also if you live in the dorms(all dental students live in the 26 street dorms and their is no cafeteria their), you will not need a meal plan. Nobody i know has one. So many places to eat...so many.
