Hey D3s - now that clinics are starting could you fill me on how they are set up for requirements? Are there only specific numbers of procedures needed or do they still require a dollar amount above that (PMV)?

you need requirements (like 12 quads of srp for D3), competencies, and pmv

i remember my friend saying the req for d3 were really easy, something like 1 CD, 1rpd, 12 srp, 11 cl2, 11 cl3, some cls1, 2 crowns and the pmv is like a minimum $26,000, which i guess would be the hard part. usually in every school no one aims at doing the minimum or your going to have a huge problem in d4 so with d3 req your also doing more pros and endo that way you have less to worry about.

Yes on all counts. Except the word on the street is that PMV is going to be a dinosaur soon -- it'll be replaced by some sort of point system which ultimately will be the same thing.

what is this pmv thing anyway, is it fake money or like do your grades depend on it? how is this even a realistic accomplishment for students? everyone knows dental school is all about luck especially in clinic, everyone has random patients and its the way you push your treatment plans that makes you or breaks you.

So, what's the reason for getting rid of PMV?

PMV is a dollar amount associated with the amount of dentistry you produce. For example, if you deliver a crown for $620 you get $620 added to your PMV total. By the end of the year you are expected to accumulate a certain amount of PMV (last year it was $22,000 for D3) to pass and your grade improves as your PMV increases from there.

As far as I know, most schools have something like this but they call them "points" and they are associated with a procedure and not the dollar value of the procedure. It makes sure students are staying productive. NYU uses PMV because it was supposed to give students an appreciation for the business side of dentistry. It's annoying and frustrating to have to "earn money for NYU to get an A" which might be why it's changing, but we'll have some sort of system in place that will be exactly the same in every way except name...
