Hi guys,

Does anybody know if its true that NYU accepts too many people and then drops a lot of students every year?? I heard such a rumor and that the school environment is extremely cut-throat and competitive because students know that a few of them will have to get dropped from the class for sure. Supposedly that have a cutoff number and every year they drop a percentage of students from the school. Anybody know if this is true? Thanks!!

It's funny. Current dental students I know, say that this is rumor is false and that the rate of attrition is pretty similar across the schools, but the size of the student body makes the attrition rate seem worse than it is. Alumni I have spoken to say that the rumor is true, and it's unfortunate. If you like the school, work hard and you'll be fine. If not, it didn't really matter what dental school the person went to, because they would still have failed.

OP, all schools deal with a handful of students who can't cut it/have family issues/or whatever and don't progress to their next year. We're talking 3 or 4 from what I heard. Well, factor in a class 2 to 2 1/2 times bigger and we have the number of dropouts that leads to the idea that NYU kicks students out.

You get cut from the class if you fail a course and then fail the summer remediation, but they don't accept extra students just to take their money and kick them out after the first year. If you fail then you deserve to be kicked out. So, don't fail and you'll be fine.

at my NYU interview it seemed like they were trying to emphasis all the ways they try to help students stay in the class. They have mentoring and tutoring you can set up, and you meet with faculty every so often to assess your progress. They really want you to get through dental school, but some people are just not going to go all the way through. That's just how it happens.
