I saw this on the NYU website for admissions...

The applicant is asked to submit letters of recommendation either from a committee on professional recommendations or from at least two teachers, preferably from science department chairpersons, who know the applicant personally.

Is this pretty strict? I have a really strong letter from a Bio prof, but I can't think of another science prof that would write a strong letter for me (the other prof i knew well has since passed away) since I've been graduated for two years. Can I get an english prof to write for me? Will I be at a big disadvantage?

Unless you have great stats it might put you at a disadvantage, since most schools want at least 2 science LORs.

A lot of people request LORs from profs they don't know well. Just make sure to give them a detailed resume/other relevant info to help them write it.
