This is an ongoing series, detailing the NYU MPH program. Part 1 was posted here.

A full semester into the program, this is what I can say about it so far:

  • It's not particularly challenging. This may go for MPHs in general, but I can only speak about this program. If you're happy with a B average, you'll be able to get by with very minimal effort. That said, getting a 4.0 requires a lot more effort than it did in undergrad. I think it's unheard of to leave with a C average. The overall average grades for most of my classes were B+/A-.
  • I sometimes get the feeling this is really just a moneymaker program for NYU. Give them enough money and have half a brain and you're in the program. The cohort as a whole doesn't seem top-tier or particularly ambitious. There are a few superstars in the program with excellent records, coherent and well-articulated ideas, and serious ambitions but they are few and far between.
  • I still think the professors as a whole are very good. Well thought out and organized classes. Guest lecturers are (for the most part) relevant. Etc.
  • A little schmoozing with the professors will get you very far. Very far. Again, this is how it was in undergrad and I'm not surprised this is how it is now.
Whenever friends ask me about applying to NYU, I generally tell them to apply elsewhere. I feel like the program is too disorganized, the quality of the cohort is lacking and subpar, and the NYU administration is too discombobulated for me to recommend the school with a clear conscience.

Also, the first semester is VERY reading and writing intensive. The second semester is much more science-based. I might change my mind at the end of the next semester.

Hi MPHer10,

Thank you so much for posting another update on your recent experience at NYU. It's very helpful!

I'm going to stop the review process early because there's no need for it. In the end, I regret not going to Tulane, Emory, BU, or Cal.

There's so much to dislike about this program, I can't even begin to list it all out. Suffice it to say, I've tried to come in with an optimistic attitude and have left with the bitter aftertaste of a discombobulated administration, garbage curriculum, and subpar cohort.

The only thing I know for sure is that I can't wait for it to end.

Wow - the candid response is admirable.
How has it been looking for a job - what is your specialization?
Also - I go back and forth between UMich and Johns Hopkins for health management and policy. How did you choose? What factors in retrospect must one conisder when accepting an offer?
