This is an ongoing series, detailing the NYU MPH program. Part 1 was posted here.
A full semester into the program, this is what I can say about it so far:
Also, the first semester is VERY reading and writing intensive. The second semester is much more science-based. I might change my mind at the end of the next semester.
A full semester into the program, this is what I can say about it so far:
- It's not particularly challenging. This may go for MPHs in general, but I can only speak about this program. If you're happy with a B average, you'll be able to get by with very minimal effort. That said, getting a 4.0 requires a lot more effort than it did in undergrad. I think it's unheard of to leave with a C average. The overall average grades for most of my classes were B+/A-.
- I sometimes get the feeling this is really just a moneymaker program for NYU. Give them enough money and have half a brain and you're in the program. The cohort as a whole doesn't seem top-tier or particularly ambitious. There are a few superstars in the program with excellent records, coherent and well-articulated ideas, and serious ambitions but they are few and far between.
- I still think the professors as a whole are very good. Well thought out and organized classes. Guest lecturers are (for the most part) relevant. Etc.
- A little schmoozing with the professors will get you very far. Very far. Again, this is how it was in undergrad and I'm not surprised this is how it is now.
