Hey guys, Can someone please help me??

So i have been accepted to both nyu and buffalo and I am very grateful but I don't know which one will be a wiser decision. I know buffalo is a great school but it is 8 hours away from me and I know absolutely nobody there and I don't think i can be away from my family for 4 years and visiting would be really hard since its so far away. NYU is great but the tuition is really high and I would still need to pay for housing because the commute is also long since i live about an hour away. Which school would you guys recommend and why?

I would choose Buffalo, because I'm assuming you're a NY resident and therefore Buffalo is more affordable than NYU. NYU for sure is more nationally recognized than Buffalo, but I think unless you get a great scholarship at NYU you should not go there.

I was also accepted to NYU, but I think I'm going to go to OHSU instead. I'm an Oregon resident, and I hope to practice in the Pacific NW.

you have to answer one question. do you value your family $276,000 ( with interest) to occasionally see them when you have your little time off? if so, go to NYU, if not, go to Buffalo.

flights from buffalo to NYC are usually under $200 and it takes less than 2 hours to get from one place to another. You can literally fly back and forth every weekend and it would still be cheaper than going to NYU. 🙂

I wouldnt look at family as the main decider, things wont really change in 4 years, you have to ask yourself which school would provide you with a better education and how much am I paying for that education?

IMO Buffalo is a much better choice between the two.

go to NYU, I live in queens which is also an hour away... i got into NYU as well, and im getting a car for the commute. You will get homesick and nothing is better than coming home to a constant homecooked meal... so instead of living their, get a car and live at home

hey man not to call you out or anything, but we spoke often about ur buffalo continuing review status, so unless you really plan to say you wouldnt go to buffalo vs. nyu, you might as well be honest. i think you would go to buffalo if you were interviewed and accepted. just wanted to throw that out there so the OP knows all the facts.

No offense unless you live in Flushing qnz, telling the OP to get a car is the worst idea in the world, I have no clue where you intend to park that mobile or if what you're really saying is that you want the OP to withdraw from NYU so you have a shot at their buffalo spot 🙂 just saying, cause it smells kinda fishy here.

you're better off living in northern nj and taking the PATH train..which stops relatively close to NYU btw.

driving in NYC is no joke hombre. traffic laws don't exist to people in nyc

Buffalo ftw: in state tuition, smaller class size..and Wired is spot on..flights aren't too bad.

Uh... do you really live in NY?

Edit: Nevermind... I see that you are 'getting' a car for the commute. May I suggest that you borrow your parent's car and try to drive it INTO the city during prime time rush hour, which is about the time you'll start classes in the morning?

 he probably lives in NY but I think hes trying to get the OP to dump his buffalo seat, so he can grab it. 😉

id kill to be in your position. NYU vs Buffalo? Thats easy.... BUFFALO!

I would go to NYU. I know people say a lot about price, but just make the hour commute. Some people taking the metro probably have to do a 30-40 minute commute, what's an hour.

NYU's tuition, without the 30,000 expenses of manhattan living, is managable. Plus I'd give the school a huge edge, especially clinically, over Buffalo.

well if you live in Buffalo you can have a 10 minute commute vs. 1 hour in NYC.

I know NYU has a strong clinic but is it that much stronger than Buffalo?

I personally have not heard of one being clearly better than the other. I have heard good things about buffalo in this aspect.

ye thats what I heard. I mean by volume alone NYU will have more patients but I dont know if its a better learning experience than Buffalo (which is known for its strong clinic.)

Maybe I should edit my statement.

My main concern with buffalo is that I have never lived away from home and I don't know if I'll be able to handle that big of a change and fit in to the enviornment. Whereas NYU the cost is really putting me off and commuting will be really hard since you have to take the LIRR then the subway everyday. Besides the cost of NYU is there any other reason as to why I shouldn't attend it? I have heard rumors about kids flunking out and less clinical exposure in NYU.

They don't flunk kids out. People flunk out because the school is very competitive. I have heard that their first and second year curriculum is extremely testing. I was told by a few people at the interview to get ready to bring the heat.

As far as the commute, if you're living at home that saves you a lot of stress and money. Commuting every day won't hinder you as a student. what do you think people with families nearby and kids do?

Honestly, you must realize that 30% of NYU's "expensive" price tag is the living budget they allow you. You could knock that out by living at home.

Ye I was yearning for buffalo, but after talking it over with the folks my decision has changed... + I don't care if u take the seat or not, because they will probably give to a person whose on the wait list anyway, and i have yet to receive an interview. So don't assume people are trying to trick you. And even if you thought I was tricking you, you could still take the opinion I wrote previously and apply it to your own situation, good luck with your choice

I go to college in the city, and my cousin is a D1 there now, and drives to school. So I think I know what the commute is like, thanks

spending 2 hours a day (an absolute minimum) commuting into manhattan from queens/longisland and back is hardly less stressful. you'd literally be home to sleep and thats all. talk about time taken away from studying. I'd pay the extra 30k and live in the city if those are your options.

OP good luck to you in your decision making process.

where does your "cousin" park? in the $25/day parking lot? I mean really dude common. be honest here with yourself and others.

Driving to the city is probably the worst thing anyone can ever do on a weekday. There is zero parking and how is a d-school student who has massive loans supposed to pay for that?

Thats unrealistic and frankly seems like a major lie. PS I live in NYC too. 🙂

I usually agree with you logic dantemac, but this one is a bit of a stretch. A 2 hour daily commute is freaking exhausting. I used to do it every day and its not easy when you've been in class and studying all day long after class. Last thing anyone wants to do is be on the train at 1am when it is slow and bums are around you with their smelly clothes.

You cant knock the 10 minute commute of buffalo or the NYC living where you have either a 5 minute walk or even a 15 minute walk back to your dorm/apartment.

Its not impossible, but 2 hours each day is taxing, esp since the OP has to take the LIRR and subway. LIRR is not cheap either so thats gonna be another expense to add to the list.

lets see.... 200k education vs 400k+ (seems like an easy decision)

He found a parking garage for 200$ a month, ye its an amazing deal for the city... If you End going to NYU as well, private message me your name so if we end up going to school together I can prove it to u... I don't need to lie bro, and I'll be accepting your apology for calling me a liar in the fall lol

dude forget dental school. im down to figure out where you can pay $200 in that area. If so, I got a new business idea. I'll sell those spots for $300. And make tons of $$$.

One of my old co workers told me parking around there was around $400 per month. $200 per month seems too good to be true.

How far from NYU is it?

Around A good 6 blocks... Apparently they just opened and needed business or something... Don't kno the full story... Even I you find a spot for 300$, that's 3000 for 10 months.... Still beats living in NY if u can commute (my drive isn't that long)

True but you forget the fact that you'll spend lots of money on gas. Driving each day. It will probably cost another $4 per day to drive so thats $80 or lets say another $100 in gas a month.

So $400 a month, ye its not bad, but what time does he/she leave in the morning to avoid traffic?

For me, gas + tolls + car payment + time lost to commute + parking would not be worth it. But I live a little over an hour away, maybe 1.5 hours. Sadly all of that is probably cheaper than a monthly rent.

Usually classes begin at 8, but the schedule is different for everyday.so he leaves 7:20am... Granted he is late a few times lol

There is absolutely now way he gets into lower manhattan for 8 by leaving 40 minutes early.. no shot..if you said he left at 620 id say thats more possible

seems like youre getting bashed all day from everyone on this board... LMAOOOO

you could possibly rent an apartment in another part of the city. im from nassau county, but i live in a decent part of brooklyn for $500 a month and i pay $29 a week for my unlimited metro card, with a 30 minute door to door commute into work in lower manhattan. i used to commute, which wasnt the worst, but nahhh. i did get on buffalo's continuing review list, but i already know for a fact that if i had to choose between buffalo and nyu i would pick nyu. i would rather be happier. dental school is a demanding/hard/isolating experience, and youre not going to get that same support from your peers as you would from your family/home. without that support, it would just be a more miserable experience for me, which in turn i feel like would affect my grades. yes the debt is alot, but nobody would go to nyu if youd be 80 years old paying your debt. you will live your life and be happy nonetheless. maybe im biased, but i love it here in the city!

These arguments are pointless, I kno I'm right, you can speculate all u want...

This equals a 35 to 45 minute commute to NYU. I live in the outer boroughs and have a 1 hour commute.

I guess it depends on the preference, I dont feel I need to pay another 200K to see my parents, when I can call or skype them for free. The support your going to get is from your classmates (since you'll spend the majority of time working with them) and its tough to do that at NYU when you have 150 people.

I dunno if I had a choice between Buffalo and NYU, I wouldnt pick based on that. Its only 4 years, but the loan difference between the two is immense.
