NYU or Stony Brook

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I need help with this decision. Leaving money out of it what is a better place to go if I plan to specialize?

Stony Brook I would say is better reputation wise. Are you from NY? Stony brook is also on long island surrounded by absolutly nothing where NYU is in the city. So its up to you, do you like the city or the quiet.

(I go to stony brook by the way so any questions you have feel free to ask. Im undergrad though)

We are also ranked the most depressing campus 😕

From what I've been told by my friends in dental school, it doesn't really matter where you got your DDS/DMD, its more about your stats. Its just like getting into dental school where they look at your gpa/dat/etc...school name/rep doesn't matter.

I was told it's really about your board scores, gpa and class rank. Another factor though is research. I don't know much about stoney brook, but I feel like NYU has a lot of research opportunities.

My personal opinion would be to go where you'll be happier, because you'll more likely do well and that is what will get you into a specialty program. Also, be careful of reputation rumors, because most of the time, they're just that...rumors. Check out each school and form your own opinion.

As far as dental school, I agree that you can specialize coming out of anywhere. Keep in mind that more difficult (good schools for specializing) are likely to have higher quality students because of the higher standards and thus it will be more difficult to be in the top of the class. For this reason, I think in some cases it might be better to go somewhere else where everyone is not gunning to specialize. All that aside, dental school is NOT entirely about GPA, DAT, etc. They do care where you did your undergrad.

If you are looking to specialize - Stony Brook, hands down. From past graduates of both schools, Stony Brook offers a far better didactic education, smaller class size (and thus more personable letters of recommendation for specializing), and the school has a much better reputation than NYUCD. Not that reputation decides whether you can specialize, but you might be happier and more confident with your quality of education based on the years of experience of past graduates, which speaks volumes between the difference of both programs.

Although you can specialize from any school, it would be a large mistake to assume that the students at NYU will be pushovers in terms of working your way to the top. There are gunners at every school, even NYU. A good, hardworking student will be a good student in both a poor or rigorous program. Going to a less well regarded school won't necessarily help you stand out - just go to the best school you can.
