I know this has been posted before and I apologize for doing it again. I am adding a poll to this to just see what you all think and ...

Thank you for your input and help.

Thanks to the people who took the time and voted. I have been looking at cons and pros based on the academic environment and standards for both schools and I think ( per my research) that they are quite comparable.

However, I have a question about cost of living in NYC versus Vegas. How big of a difference do you guys think we are talking here ?

Looking at the Tuition and fee from both schools ( I am non-residence in both ) and it seems NYU is $8539 (over 4 years) cheaper and I have also paid 5K already so the difference is really $13539. Also, there is an additional cost of books for UNLV which is not included in their tuition and fees for $14300 over 4 years ( I thought they are giving us computer with pre-loaded CD text book, little confused about this fee) that makes the total of around $28000.

Also, with the budget cuts in Nevada the tuition fee increase in UNLV probably will be more substantial than NYU over the next 4 years.

Now, will the cost of living in NYC, averaged over 4 years be more than or around 28-35 k in comparison to Vegas ??

Your input is highly appreciated .

Could you give us some background information about where you're from and what you're looking for in school?

As far as cost of living, I can't really be much help again, but I would check the numbers that the schools give you. I do know that Las Vegas is a good place currently to buy real estate, at least that's what I've read.

I am non-traditional student so I am not looking to do specialty after graduation. I am also married so partying or ... is not what I am looking for. I just want to be in a school that really gets me ready for the work place and give me the best education that I can get. Both schools in my visit seemed to be on top of their games and both gave me a good feeling about their curriculum and their teaching standards.

So I am willing to spend more in one school if I think it will give me back more bang for my money after 4 years. As far as Real State, you are correct. Being in Vegas, I can just purchase apartment and pay off almost half of it and this way save at least 15 K over the next 4 years ( given the prices don't fall even more which I don't think it will).

I have heard the rent in NYC is cheapest $2000 a month for a tiny apt
and about $800 for a 2 bedroom in nevada.

This is what I keep hearing too but is this really true ??

If in NYC, I was thinking about renting a small studio apartment little further from school and just taking the Subway to school everyday. I was told that you can find places like that in OK to Good neighborhood ( somewhere that you wont get mugged ) for around $1500 a month.

Another thing to think of, with just doing GP, is where you would be more likely to want to practice? Do you have family near either location? It seems like UNLV might work out a little better because NYC is known for being rather saturated with dentists.

I know that I will be probably looking at paying ~900ish in NYC but that will be with a roommate. I would suggest trying to find a 2 BR and trying to split it if you can.

I thought you get in-state tuition after the 1st year at UNLV? Even with that NYU is still cheaper?

At current rates UNLV is way cheaper. You get in-state for the last 3 years. ~$230k over 4 years. But with the current budget cuts being considered and likely future increases I figure it will more realistically be closer to $300k. That's not including living expenses. Which are way cheaper in Vegas than NY. But you will probably need a car in Vegas as well so factor that in. Neither is cheap, go to the school/city you like the most.

I think he is an international so it does not make a difference.

Yeah if you pay out of state the whole time they are close in price, I'd venture to say UNLV would be more because of the potential increases.

I think you should have applied for NV residency back in March to be considered a residence for 2nd year. So you will be OS for the 2nd year too!

The March deadline was to get it for the first year, Dr. Ancajas posted this:

TO: Class of 2015 Out-of-State Students

FROM: Dr. Christine C. Ancajas

SUBJECT: Applying for Residency

Please be aware that you will be eligible for a residency reclassification after your first year in dental school. You will need to provide proper documentation in July/August of next year.

and that will be for D2.

I like to compare UNLV and NYU this way:

If you are a 24-26, married, or more or less settled down, UNLV is the way to go. If you are 22-24, single, and more "young," NYU is the way to go. I definitely felt a difference in terms of student body with UNLV.

Price-wise? UNLV is cheaper, but I would vouch that it won't be much cheaper in the future. Perhaps, rising tuition costs will place it at a "cheaper" private university. None-the-less, NYU will still hold the number one spot for tuition prices.

Edit: Lastly, I felt that NYU had more "options" of what to do in Dental School (research). I felt UNLV had pretty one path regarding Dentistry, and that was to serve the community. Both schools get you a DDS, but I feel one has a more "linear" path over the other.

Dear friend!
Go on Realtor.com You can purchase a home in Vegas for 15-20K! LOL

Thats saves you lots of money plus, maybe in 4 years the market turns around and you can sell the condo for 50K and put all the money on Roulette (black) and double up twice and be TUITION FREE!!! 😉 "joke"

LOOOL, I know. If I end up in Vegas, I am definitely buying something.

I talked to a friend of friend today who said the cost of living in NYC , assuming I rent a studio apartment somewhere 20-30 minutes Subway ride to NYU, will be around 35-40 K a Year.

I think that would be about 10 K a Year more than Vegas even if I have a Car expense and ...

Now, I only have to do more research about the Tuition hike for the next few years and see what is the real number there and ...

It is very interesting that you mentioned that because this is the exact same feeling that I had after my visit to both schools.

If you go to NYU you really should share a place. Just find another older student; the city is full of them.

It sounds like you are leaning UNLV though. Best to go with your gut.

Thank you for all your inputs and advices. you have been a great help. I am more incline toward UNLV but need to find out more about the tuition rise and if it applies to out of state students and ... At the same time, deep down I feel like NYU offers better program and gets its students readier for the job at the end of the 4 years.

I live in vegas now and i gaurantee that you will love the city...not that youll have the time...The cost of living here is cheap..The housing near(walking/bike) the dental school is cheap, but housing even 15 minutes(driving) in summerlin is safe and affordable. No traffic, the seasons arent as bad as NY...I want to stay in vegas to go to dental school...

Out of curiousity what were your stats

^^ Thanks for the information. I am non-traditional student so my stat may not be very useful. My BCP GPA is 3.45 , Overall GPA: 3.4 AA:20, TS:20,PAT:18.

What makes someone a nontraditional student...i.e. I am 25 and will be 26 when i apply. I took a 6 year break in between high school and returning to college. Does that alone make me nontraditional or are there more factors in play?

Non traditional is just a label for an applicant that isn't the typical applicant.

Yes, you are non-traditional. Traditional = graduated HS at 18, went straight to college, finished in 4 years, then got into dschool.
