  1. Pre-Dental
Hello all! I was fortunate in getting accepted into 4 schools, my top choices being NYU and Baylor.

I find it difficult to choose since I live in Dallas and miss family, but I absolutely love being out-of-state and do not plan to practice in Dallas. After looking up rankings (http://dental-schools.findthebest.com/), I found that NYU has a smart rank of 5 while Baylor is 31. However, I feel like I have an obligation to try out Dallas since I have not lived there for 4 years and might actually prefer the area, especially due to my family.

Is anyone having a dilemma in decisions? Please let me know how you are making that decision, or why!

Are your parents or another 3rd party financing DS for you? If not, then its Baylor by a country mile. And I was also just accepted by NYU.

People often say things like "go to the place that will make you happy, even if it costs more money". The problem with this sentiment is that it is impossible to determine what will happen in the future at one school vs another and how it will impact your happiness. That is why it is smart to go cheaper. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in extra debt will lead to less happiness in 100% of scenarios.

It seems extremely silly that you would trust that internet ranking website to help determine where to go to school. You got accepted to NYU and Baylor, you were definitely at both of them for interviews, had questions answered and know what both schools offer! Using Find the Best to influence such a massive decision is crazy. What does smart rank even mean?

Haha, this is funny because I go to university in Texas, and one time during a pre-dental org meeting, I overheard some guys talking. One guy said, "Yeah, even if I got into NYU and none in Texas, I would still reapply and try to get into Texas again." I guess NYU's tuition cost is massive compared to our schools, but then again, NYC is definitely a lot more exciting.

Adding to that, one of my friends applied two years ago, didn't get into Texas, and ended up going to NYU. She said that she really wished she had the option to stay in Texas because her apartment rent is ridiculous, in addition to tuition.

So, I think the bottom line is, how are you paying for all of this?

My parents are fully financing DS for me, and congratulations!

Congrats on the acceptances though. If you think about it you don't really hear complaints from people that went to high priced schools. Most people seem to enjoy their schools they went to regardless.

You lucky #$%^. Seriously though, congrats. NYU is a top notch program and Ive heard it has some of the most rigorous clinical requirements. Plus you get to live in NYC. If money was not an issue I think NYU would be one of the most sought after programs in the country. If you forfeit your seat at Baylor you will be making someone very, very happy. Good luck and congrats on the offers!

I was fortunate enough to also get accepted to both of these schools! but I'm definitely picking Baylor over NYU because of the cheaper tuition and multiple other reasons. Dallas, TX is my home. I went to middle school and high school there. I also want to be in a relatively small class as opposed to the +300 class size. NYU is just too big and expensive for me.

But I see that your parents are fully supporting you financially throughout dental school...in that case, wow, it might be a tough one. I guess take into consideration family, friends, the school's friendliness and facilities, their curriculum, etc. If I were in your shoes, I would probably still choose Baylor over NYU because I don't want my parents spending that much money on me.

Total Cost of Attendance including living expenses:
Baylor: $197,000
NYU: $447,000

I don't care who's paying, how is this even a question?
I feel like NYU will be more than that if you want to enjoy a little out in the city lol

Yea, I have no idea what the actual cost of living might be. I pulled those numbers from ADEA who pulled them from the dental school itself.

Let's play with some more numbers:

Assume straight up 6.8% and 20 years for each loan. No IBR or anything, just a simple loan:

Baylor: $200,000. Monthly: $1527 Total Payment: $366,402
NYU: $450,000. Monthly: $3435 Total Payment: $824,406

But, maybe your parents are paying cash?

Go to Baylor and have them invest the $1900/month saved into an investment that earns 6% annually and they'll have a nest egg of $892,000 in 20 years.

@laira clinically, NYU is excellent, there's no doubt about it. But, Texas schools have an awesome reputation for producing clinically strong dentists. Many former military officers teach/have taught at those schools, and they are VERY reputable institutions.

So in terms of an education, you can't go wrong with either place. Now consider this---class size. 380 vs. probably around 100 i want to say? (it's probably a smaller number). always go with smaller class size, in my opinion.

Research is a big thing at NYU--if you feel that you want to actively pursue it, NYU most probably has the edge.

Now considering costs: you're looking to invest somewhere in the neighborhood of $110,000 a YEAR if you decide to come to NYU. if your parents can afford that, then god bless you.

Also keep this in mind: dental school is going to be tough no matter where you go. Coming to NYU won't mean partying in exclusive clubs and going to Broadway shows every week. You don't get to enjoy the city as much as one would think. Yes it's nice to have that outlet whenever you have a break, but dental school will drain you mentally and physically---having your family there at your side might outweigh the perks of moving to NYC. You can always move wherever you want after you become a dentist. idk, just my opinion. i still say go to baylor.

TROLL ALERT!! TROLL ALERT!! people..., lmao

You should definitely go to Baylor. You will come out with less student debt and also, TX is one of the best states to practice dentistry. You could also save money since you live in Dallas . However, if anyone needs help with finding a spot to stay contact Venus Jones. She helped me find a spot and I am happy for that https://www.facebook.com/pages/Venus-Jones/165407143650038

What investment pays 6% in today's market?

I just wanted to say- this is a BEAUTIFUL idea. I think I'm going to do this for my parents once I start earning. Any idea how much to put in to get them to $1 mil in 10 years? I really want them to actually enjoy it.

Also,what investment pays 6% in today's market?

🤣🤣

Unless you are being serious. Initial amount of $100k, adding $5k monthly @ 6% will give you $995,406.18.

A lot of them, actually. Don't be one of those people who watches the Wolf of Wall Street and decides that the stock market is evil and avoids it for the rest of your days.

I asked my bank rep. about investing, and she just said "We'll talk about that later" and dismissed it.

I asked my bank rep. about investing ~$2,000 that I had saved up, and she just said "We'll talk about that later" and dismissed it. I then looked up bank rate and found some pretty sad rates...like 1-2%. 🙁

Then I suggest you return to your bank, walk up to your bank rep. and karate kick her in the neck. Never too early to start, and waiting is the worst thing young people can do when it comes to investing.

Are these the rates for CDs? I remember when I was in middle school I had a CD with a 6% rate for 1 year....nowadays you're lucky to find one for 2.5% for 5 years.

Yeah! I just looked up 5 year CDs with the highest yields nationally. Best APY = 2.25%.

Time is your best friend when it comes to investing (usually), compound interest is like a freight train, takes awhile to get moving but once it's up to full speed....

Changing my scenario from 20 to 10 years makes a huge difference in the amount needed monthly to invest to reach $1 million. Starting with $2000 you'd need to invest $6000/month to reach a million in 10 years. Versus $2000/month for 20 years to reach a million. If you pushed that $6k/month out to 20 years you'd have almost $3 million.

Anyway, like I said, time is the biggest factor. Start now. There are plenty of safe places to invest if you're looking for long term retirement investing. Roth IRA would be a great start.

Off topic woo!
