i posted this in the predental forum too. current nyu students, please give your honest opinions! i'm having a hard time deciding... thanks.

nyu: better location
upenn: a more respected school

I would pick Upen within a heartbeat!

Yes, if you want to choose a dental school for the "name" then choose Penn. Those who know dental schools will know that you got into a school where the average gpa was around a 3.7... nothing close to the 3.3 dimwits you find at NYU. Besides, it's an IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL.

Dentistry is not law. A "better" pedigree will not be a huge contributing factor in securing you a better job at the bigger firm. You actually have the luxury of going where you feel the most comfortable without worrying about the stigma of attending a lower-ranked school. I took advantage of that fact and I'm moving to New York City in a few weeks because I don't know if I'll ever have another chance. If that's what you want, I'd recommend doing the same.

Penn undoubtedly has the name. It's a great dental school.

NYU has it's own pluses. The biggest is location. In terms of reputation, everyone knows that everyone knows NYU. NYU has a top 4 law school, a top ten business school, a great medical school and a world renowned film school.

Both schools are crazy expensive, though.

Ultimately, it's up to YOU to determine what school will fit you the best. Just because you pick a certain school does not guarantee you anything. Some people feel more comfortable and thrive in a less competitive environment. Others need to get pushed to be motivated. Others want the name and don't mind living in a bad area.

Put it this way: My friend attended a pretty bad medical school. Yet, he is currently a resident at a very, very prestigious hospital for a specialty everyone wants. He constantly reminds me that had he attended a top medical school, he probably wouldn't have matched into this program because of competition from his classmates. My two cents

PLEASE. Don't make the mistake of going to a dental school just because it's Ivy or whatever. You might be very disappointed.
Dental schools in general tend not to follow their Universities as far as reputation is concerned. There are only 3 Ivy dental programs, and I can assure you they are not the top 3 programs as far a dental education and training are concerned.

Having said that, I would choose PENNN solely for the fact that you will get a better training. The fact that it is Ivy can not be ignored, but of course should be the icing on the cake, and not a foundation for this crucial decision you are about to make.
NYUCD is struggling right now to turn its DDS program around, and does not enjoy the stellar reputation it once did. HOWEVER, all that might just change by the time you graduate from dental school. NYU has appointed a new dean (Dr. Bertolami - spelling?), which has a proven track record at UCSF (another fine dental school).

All in all, congrats on both acceptances.

Dear God,

You have said it all with this eloquent and accurate post. One more feather in your cap in my humble opinion. Well said NileBDS, well said indeed.
