Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone else is considering the MPA in Health Policy and Management at NYU Wagner? It would be great to hear from current students about their experience in this program. I like Wagner because of the year-long Capstone project, the fact that it's in NYC, the curriculum seems business-oriented, and many employers recruit there. However, the cost of living is NYC is high, as we all know.

I am interested in pursuing healthcare consulting, and the employers that recruit there are pretty impressive.

If anyone can share reasons why or why not NYU Wagner, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Hi mle1989,

I was admitted and seriously considered NYU's program in health management and policy. I am also interested in consulting and you are right, students end up at very impressive firms.

Did you go to an open house by any chance? Maybe it was just my particular experience but I was slightly unimpressed. First of all, I asked about the recruiting thing and apparently only in the last one or two years has Deloitte actually started coming to campus to recruit but they are the only firm. This does not include career fairs though, where I think other firms are represented. I just thought it was strange that being in NYC only one firm was coming to campus.

The other thing that I was hesitant about were the other students at Wagner. Apparently you take lots of core classes with students throughout Wagner (which includes social policy and international/global something or other). Again this could be particular to my preferences but I would prefer that in two short years of grad school, my classes and the students I interact with are more focused on healthcare specifically. In addition, they don't require that health policy/management students have any healthcare experience at all in order to be admitted to that program. To me, that makes it seem like there will be a lot of background information and basic fundamentals of healthcare that need be covered early on. Now depending on your experience and preference all of these things could be considered positives.

Anyway, I think it's a great school, excellent name recognition, great location (if you are willing to pay the costs of living etc), great faculty, and undeniable that students are getting great jobs. So if you have a good feeling about it then I say go for it! Hope this helps.

Thanks for your input! I won't be able to make it to Admitted Student Day, which is why I appreciate it.

I too thought it was weird that Deloitte seems to be the only consulting firm that recruits at NYU, especially because so many firms are based in the city. And yes, even though it is spun in a positive light on the website, sharing courses with other non-HPAM students seemed odd and unfocused to me. You're right that because we only have 2 years, we should try to learn and pursue exactly what we want during that time period. I was already leaning away from NYU for these reasons and others, but I couldn't help but wonder what I'd be missing if I didn't choose NYU. For my personal goals, I think I'd rather be in a school of Public Health 🙂
